Detach display kills MC19.38 [SOLVED]
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:59:29 am »

Hi all, I have a three monitor setup and run MC in the center and the detached display on the left screen (windowed). I start MC and select a TV show to watch, it starts playing in the action window area small size. I right click on the display and select detach. It then switches to the left monitor in windowed mode and runs fine. If I kill the display window it then reverts back to the action window area. The next time I detach the display MC dies.

I have attached a log for Matt et al.

Please test with Red October Standard.  In the past, madVR (used by Red October HQ) was not always the happiest with a detached display.

... I get the same results with standard and HQ.
Change to RO Std and then reboot.

It's also possible that it's a video driver problem.

Change to RO Std and then reboot.

He already did that above, so I don't think that's it.

However, unfortunately I'm stumped.

You could grab a crash log (Help > Logging) and mail it to logs at jriver (dot) com.  Maybe it'll have a clue.

But this might turn out to be a mystery we can't solve since it isn't happening on other machines.

Edit:

It does happen in MC18.

Log sent.

OK another test, If I have the display detached on the same monitor as MC main program, and detach the display then I get the crash. I have just done this test on my laptop (only one monitor) and got the crash, so I can now do it on two different machines.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start MC (in my case this also starts MC server)
2) Navigate to Video/Date Imported in Main Playing now pane (left hand side), any film / TV / video at all will cause the crash
3) Play a movie (for me it starts in the small Display window above Action Window
4) Right click in the Display window and Detach Display (this now becomes a bigger detached display window
5) Click the stop button in the main window
6) Close the Display window
7) Play the same video again (goes to the small display window again)
/8) Right click and detach display
Media Center 19 has stopped working error message from windows

The first Detach Display works and the second always fails.
I can do this on two different machines, one a laptop with only one display and the other a 4 screen desktop machine.

I can double click on the video display (Full display mode and the small display window) as many times as I want and this works fine. It is only when I select Detach Display that the crash happens.

OK, So I looked at this from another angle. What is the same on the laptop and the desktop machine. Well Windows 7, MC19 and very little else except Office 2007. I recently put that on the desktop machine due to work (I usually use OpenOffice). So I decided to take it off (it was causing right click menu errors anywhooo). That did not solve the problem. Next back to Acronis to restore to a stable config MC18 and no Office. OK now the display issue has gone and the right click menus work. Start building up the machine again - MC19 etc.

All works. It took a few Acronis restores to different versions of the system but looks like Office was the guilty s/w. I have no idea why it would cause this very specific MC error but it did. I hope I do not run out of MC restores ;(

Thanks to the MC devs for looking into this though.

I was wrong again, the culprit is TeamViewer 8. Office screwed the right click menu and TeamViewer 8 screwed the display.
If anybody else is using TeamViewer 8 can they please try the steps above to recreate.
