Transfer JRiver Media Center 19 to new computer
« on: January 03, 2014, 11:45:47 pm »

I find myself in need of transfering my existing JRiver MC 19 (and all associated files) to another computer. The existing PC is equipped with Windows Vista. The new PC I am attempting to transfer to has Windows 8. HELP!  :D

Thanks!

Let me clarify: I have Media Center 19 in the computer, but it is asking me : How do you want to open this file (.mjr) ...and I have no idea  ? Windows 8 is very different. Does anyone have experience with this version of windows?

Also, what is the best way to transfer music files over to this PC?

Thanks!

The .mjr file should open automatically with a doublel-click if you've installed MC onto the PC.  Is this an install key from more than 2 weeks ago?  If so then it won't work anyway and you need to generate a new one. See http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License.

Are you intending to put the music files in extactly the same place on the new PC as they were on the old PC? If so, you can simply copy them across (using your network) then use Backup Media Library in MC to create an archive of your lirbary, copy the archive file to the new PC, then restore it there. See http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Transfer, http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Backup_Library and http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restore_a_library.

Windows 8 is kinda dumb about registering file extensions.

Reinstall MC using the latest build.  Make sure you aren't doing anything weird with the installer like running it in compatibility mode or running as an Admin.  Just double-click the installer and run it.  Then try double-clicking the MJR file again.  If you see this thing, choose Media Center 19 from the list:

If that doesn't work.  Then associate the MJR file type with MC manually:

http://www.wikihow.com/Associate-File-Types-in-Windows-8

You can also just register MC19 directly now (you don't need the MJR except for non-Internet-connected PCs).  You can find the option to install the license under the Help menu in MC, and just copypasta in the registration code directly.

Thanks guys, I actually found my key and downloaded an up to date version of MC 19 on the new PC. That part is done. But how to get music transferred from the old PC (Vista) to the new PC (Win 8) is still a magic trick I have yet to learn.  :-\

Is anyone willing to explain how this can be done. Please speak slowly.  ::)

The wiki has a topic called "Moving Files".

here is the link to the wiki topic called "Moving Files" http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files as JimH has suggested for a read.

but I can't find anywhere in it how to do this to one pc to another pc...

Isn't the key to backup your library?
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Backup_Library

I'd be setting up the new PC with the same drive and directory structure the same as the parent PC.
Then, I'd back up the library (see above).
Do your data copy, setup the new PC, install MC and then restore the library file.

Not only should that bring in your library structure but it should also bring in your other settings and preferences. If I've missed something, then I'm sure corrective comment will be forthcoming.
