Is this possible to do?
« on: February 09, 2014, 09:01:06 pm »

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I'm totally a noob when it comes to JRiver MC. Until now I've been using XBMC and I like it except for one minor thing which is why I'm considering JRiver.

So for my environment, I have a dedicated stereo which does nothing but 2 channel audio. All my music is ripped from CD as WAV or Albums purchased online as FLAC. I don't do any tagging on my WAV files nor do I really need to. I basically listen to music by browsing the files I need and playing them (via a MCE remote).

Folders are laid out as such:

D:\Music\WAV\Artist\Album\Tracks
D:\Music\FLAC\Artist\Album\Tracks

So I've figured out how to get JRiver to start up in theater mode and I've also customized the view so its only got the explorer under the gadgets section and nothing else but I'm wondering if I can do the following. Can I have it start by going directly to theater mode then go directly to gadgets and explorer and into a path which I specify - in this case d:\Music.

When I first start it, I'd prefer not seeing the word gadgets and explorer. I'd really rather it go into explorer right away to that path. That way what I see are two folders - WAV and FLAC then I can navigate from there as a starting point.

If I can do that, then I'm set. The behavior is pretty much the same as XBMC. I can then take advantage of the EQ function of JRiver which is what I really need.

Any help is welcome.

Hi Guys, ok so I thought the explorer had to be under the gadget but I deleted gadget and just added explorer. That's better.

Now all I need to figure out is if I can have it start in theater mode and get directly into explorer to the path specified. That would be awesome.

You're thinking about accessing your media by the file system.  You can do better by using the tags within the files.  Use the Music section of Theater View to navigate.

Yes you're correct, I'm basically navigating the file system via a remote but its the way I prefer. I don't have enough music where it warrants me searching or browsing via tags.  The folder structure already is logically laid out so I don't really need to reinvent the wheel :)

I'm 99% there. At this point I just have to see if I can change the behavior of the explorer view so when it starts, it goes into a specific drive and a folder as its starting point.

Customize Theater View, and add a new Library Item, selecting Location as one of your Categories.  This is like Explorer, but will be much faster.

Awesome. Many thanks MrC. That's basically exactly what I was after and now, I think I like this better than XBMC. Is it my imagination or does my music sound a little more clear. Its probably in my head because both XBMC and JRiver are going through WASAPI so there should really be no difference. Either way I like :)

I'd recommend that you give this a read:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Lossless_Compression

Consider giving FLAC or APE a go for your WAVs.

If the MC lookup function doesn't help (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/YADB), MrC has cooked some cool meta-data scrapers that you can find on Interact or there are other options on the wild and wooly interweb like MusicBrainz Picard.

There are various functions that make life easy:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files
I've been using MC for a while now and have only recently fully realised the power of the info in these links.

Well for me the choice of going wav was more about having a format which is lossless and supported by virtually every device. Drive space is cheap so its not a concern. I guess I could always do tagging on WAV files but I think I'm ok just dealing with the folders :)
