Recommendation Request for DSD Streaming for Oppo
« on: April 17, 2014, 08:01:50 pm »

Hi all,

My current equipment:
Synology NAS
Oppo BDP-105 Modwright
Android phone and tablet running BubbleUPnP

This generally works good,  streaming my FLAC collection of std and hires music.   It does not support gapless nor does it support my SACD rips in DSF.  Other than that,  it sounds great and has an ok UI.  I can play my DSF files from an attached hard drive on the Oppo,  but then have to use either the on-screen Oppo menu or their Media Control app which isn't supported on my tablet, and neither are very good options.

I would like a single streaming solution that improves on the UI experience for FLAC while adding streaming support for DSF.  I would like it to be seamless between the two formats, having play lists that mix FLAC and DSF, and be controlled by my Samsung Galaxy phone and tablet.  I'm an audiophile type,  so I'm unwilling to compromise any sound quality along the way.  I believe that JRiver now supports streaming DSF to Oppo,  so that's why I posting here.

I'm not willing to leave my main Windows computer on but am willing to buy a tiny,  very energy efficient box that ideally isn't located near the Oppo, but could be if required.  Can anyone first confirm that this is in fact possible,  and if so,  recommend a tiny pc solution suitable for running JRiver with hires and DSF.

Thanks in advance for all help!

Welcome to the forum.  Our (proposed) tiny solution is here:

Thanks Jim.    I was sorta thinking along the NUC lines for building my own, but a pre-built, pre-tested solution is also very appealing.  That device might be interesting to me if with it, I can accomplish the requirements I listed.  Can you comment on that?

Thank you,

The Oppo does play DSD & DSF files very nicely under UPnP push from MC. (MC was updated a month or two ago to support this function - see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=86430.0 )

However the Oppo still cannot play SACD images under UPnP push. It seems only able to play SACD under pull using its own UI. This is an Oppo problem not an MC problem.

One solution for you could be to convert your SACDs to DSD / DSF files.

Thanks Andrew. Yes, I am in the process of ripping all my SACD's to DSF, so as long as MC can push the DSF files over the network (without converting them away from native DSD/DSF) to the Oppo 105, and the Oppo can play them unconverted, then it sounds like a good solution.  Do I have that right?

Correct. It works fine for me. You need a current version of MC and the most recent firmware on the Oppo. Set MC's UPnP streaming options to play "original format" (no conversion).

To be on the safe side (Murphy etc) do please check with a DSF test track before embarking on a huge load of SACD file conversions though...

Thank you very much for your help.  At this point, I have installed MC19 on my main Windows computer, pointed it to my music shares that resides on a Synology NAS, and am controlling FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC and DSF/DFF files from an Android device via either Gizmo or BubbleUPnP to my Oppo 105.  Everything is working really good with no transcoding or conversion.  Now my next move is to get a tiny computer (maybe a NUC or something like it) and run MC19 from that so I don't have to leave my energy-hog hex-core running all the time.  I will post over in that forum for suggestions that are available now...

Thanks again!!!

The only issue I have is a small "click" in some DSF files, ripped from SACD ISO images using sacd_extract. Sounds a bit like a drop of turntable needle. Sound quality was excellent and (if not for a click) I was not able to distinguish JRiver streaming from when played actual SACD disks.
I think OPPO now removed support for SACD-R (request from media companies), so DSF is the only solution for rips.
Just don't rip SACD ISO into DSF using MC -it does it via conversion to PCM and back, significantly (audible) reducing sound quality.

I can't figure out how to do this with my Oppo BDP-105.  Can someone give specific instructions on how to set this up?  I am using JRiver 19, my oppo has the latest firmware and my music is on a Netgear ReadyNAS.

Very simple
turn your OPPO on.
1) if using Gizmo, simply choose your OPPO as reply device. everything that you choose later will be played on it
2) if using Windows main JRiver interface, you can do the same (choosing OPPO as main player) or simply drag and drop album into OPPO in "playing now" list of players. For me preferred, as I can stream to another rendering device in bedroom at the same time.
Please be aware, that using this method playback is not gapless (apprently due to error in OPPO DMR implementation)

Oppo released a new firmware today which claims to fix the gapless issue..

Unfortunately looks like they did not do anything to solve an issue with gapless playback via "push". Just install new firmware. No cigar (( Checked readme - they only solved issue when it was already somehow working (in pull mode).

I hope you will report this to Oppo customer service.

PS over on AVSforum they said that "Gapless playback is only available for attached storage, which has always been the case."

AndrewFG - have you thought about offering some consulting services to Oppo?  I know finding an In could be the biggest challenge, that is, if they have interest in gapless.  Positioned and marketed well, they might be persuaded of the value of Oppo + MC.

Indeed I have :)

..but I have unfortunately not been able to find anyone there who is interested..

.. but I don't think this is because they don't care (perhaps only that they don't see the need)..
