Users: How do you use custom fields?
« on: February 09, 2002, 06:19:06 pm »

Tell me how you use custom fields.  You get a prize if I use your way as an example in the help file...like a goldfish or a cucumber from my garden!.  Now come on, guys, don't go getting sidetracked by the prize... I know how you work.  Next thing you know, this thread has 30 posts about how King Sparta once won a prize at a bazaar when he was 12, Doof 'found' a prize in his pepperoni sub, Scronch won Songwriter of the year, and Callithumpian won the spelling bee for correctly spelling his username. So be forewarned... this is about custom fields!

I use Custom1 to keep my ape image files separate from my other ape files.

I use custom fields to hide certain files from certain media views.

For instance, I have a lot of mp3's with a Comedy genre. Some are full CD's, others are just random bits. In certain Media Views, I may want the random bits, but not the full CD's and vice versa. So rather than try and create a rule that excludes certain artists, I just set Custom 1 to "Hide" or something and then create a rule that excludes all files where Custom1=[Hide].

I use Custom Fields to point to my Interact posts, just in case they are altered or deleted.

I don't use custom fields.  I might start if we get the "database text dump" feature.

I use the custom fields for additional info re. the specific song.

Custom 1 is renamed to: Live/Studio
Custom 2 is renamed to Take no. (here I log what specific take number the song is
Custom 3 is renamed to Master/Alt. take. Here I log whether or not the song is a master take or an alternate take

I've renamed them to Primary Archive, Secondary Archive, Tertiary Archive and they record what Archive CD number they can be found on if/when disaster strikes.
I've archived by Artist(primary) then some things by Genre(secondary) and, now that I have an mp3 disc player, I might burn an event CD like "Picnic at the Falls", giving a third tier of backup.

EG: Sarah Vaughn - Summertime.mp3
Primary Archive - CD16 (by Artist)
Secondary Archive - CD37(by Genre - "Vocal")
Tertiary Archive - CD40 (event - "Day at the Beach")

Search field of "custom1=[]" shows those items which have never been archived. Right now that returns empty.

I keep the Primary set at work so even the house burns down I don't lose any music.(other stuff I can briefly get along without)
Media Jukebox 72272 and 80180 are also on every disc along with my various licenses.

In 7.2 used Custom1 for Quality, and only put something in it if the file needed to be re-aquired.  8x has a field for quality, right?

Scronch, in MJ 8 everything is exported in .mpl playlists. (which are man-readable XML files)  So, the feature is already there Next Page

>>>>>>>>>>Doof 'found' a prize in his pepperoni sub

It was some time ago, but if I remember correctly, it was some of Doof's customers that found the surprise (he had, ever so slyly, switched sandwitches them).

Custom1 = Subgenre
Custom2 = "Tones" from Allmusic.com
Custom2 = "Styles" from Allmusic.com

I simply cut and paste the "Tones" and "Styles" fields from Allmusic.com into these fields. I do this on a per album basis (editing all songs at once). As I listen to the songs I may edit these fields to more accurately reflect the Tones and Styles I think are applicable to the song. I can then use smartlists to search within these fields

Custom 1 = Backup on CD (DATE)
Custom 2 = Mature Music

I use custom1 to let me know where and when I backed this up.
I use custom2 to create a smartlist that I use to skip certain kinds of music when children are around.

Forgot to say that if you put MJ in party mode the kids can't get access to the offensive music in MJ when you have it setup to filter the mature music.  To get to it they would have to use a different program.

Custom 1 = compilation info.  If i know the artist/album for tracks on a "soundtrack" CD, I group the soundtrack here.
Custom 2 = backup location for the track

"like a goldfish or a cucumber from my garden"......

.....as an ex carny, I understand the goldfish prize, but a cucumber is a new one.  I bet the cucumber will better withstand ground transportation, so that is my choice if I win.

I use Custom1 to record the tempo of the music.  But it's maybe not such a good example because you can't do meaningful smartlist searches on numeric values in the custom fields -- I can make a list of songs that are exactly 120 beats per minute, but not (easily) songs that are between 120 and 140 beats per minute.

I do something similar to Callithumpian.  I use the custom fields to indicate what archive disk the song is stored to.

custom2 = peak position on chart
custom3 = number of weeks on chart
