Content editing usability (Action Window)
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:08:31 am »

I don't know why there is this action window that i find has bad usability.

You have to scroll up and down and search a long list...
You need to resize the the sidebar to see long entries...
You need to hover over the tag names if they are long to read them completely...

Why not a popup window to edit?
That way you see everything at a glance and it makes work allot easier.

Some examples from SoftCAT, eXtreme Movie Manager and Helium Music Manager
in the attachments.

There is a new tagging pane in development which you might want to try.
It doesn't address all these complaints, but does make things a lot easier to work with - especially as you can create your own templates.
Hold down the shift key when opening the tagging pane to preview it. (it can be a bit buggy sometimes, which is why it is hidden)

OT: How can i put/show image attachments in my postings?
There is the image tag

The
Code: [Select]
[img][/img] BB code works fine but needs an URL (I use Imgur its fast and you don't have to set up an account for temp files; this allows you to embed of course the image inside of the text. Attachments you seem to have gotten already (Attach files/images by clicking on additional options (+ sign))

Ok, in another thread "6233638" had some images in his answer and I thought they are
the attachments. But now i checked it and see it's abload.de (are you german 6233638?).
I don't like image hoster...

But I also know that Simple Machines Forum has the option to embed the attachments.
So looks like its turned off which does not really make sense if you already allow
image attachments that use space on your own server.

I agree with some of your points, but I hate pop up windows, as it makes batch tagging harder and I can't cycle views

I wish instead that there would be more settings/control over the action window sizing and placement

I agree with ferday, pop up windows are a royal pain when you are editing more than one file.

You can control which tags are displayed in the tag window. Click on the gear symbol at the left end of the tag window header to see choices.  I use "Show tags in current view" and select columns in the file list for tags I want to see in the Tag window.

Look at the HMM (Helium) picture.
If you select multiple flacs then you have a button next on the side where you
see the back button. Then there also is a apply to all button.
Lets say i just want to change the year. I change it and click the padlock
in front of it and that means this field gets applied to all files.
Also patch changing the track number is easy. Lets say from 01-10 to 05-15...
Just ender 05 in the field and 15 in "total tracks" and lock the "total tracks" and click
"apply to all".

You want to make another adjustment to just one file from all you selected?
Just click "next" until you reach that file and make your change.
And can you see the small play, pause, stop buttons in the left bottom corner
under BPM? You can listen to the file while you are editing...

And when it comes to movies it works similar in eXtreme Movie Manager.
Select a punch of movies and click "Edit multiple" and a window comes up
like in the screenshoot example attachments.

Everybody who ever worked with more then one monitor knows that you are
allot faster. An extra window you can drag to the second monitor and it
doesn't cover for example your list view where you sometimes have allot
of stuff and need allot of width to see it all.

Why don't you spend a little more time learning how the present system works before you go on making more suggestions?

So i disagree with "it's a pain".

Brief remark for all of you:
Rule-1: The Boss is always right.
Rule-2: If the Boss is wrong, see rule 1.
*lol

In MC you first select one or a number of files.  The changes you  make in the Tag window apply to the files that are currently selected.  Much simpler than the procedure you describe.

How a system works has nothing to do with usability.
Sure some stuff is just habit/practice. But since I'm with computers
since the C64 time (still in use like also 2 DOS PCs and a Win95 and a Win98 PC)
i hope i have a good feeling for what makes work/usability easier or better.

JRiver looks great. The core is great - it has a real DB you can work with.
Not like XBMC where the DB is :-X and people hack the skins like crazy to get
functions/stuff you can't add to the DB. So all your files need a special naming
to show up and get recognized and they need to get scraped instead of linking
the file in a DB field. Before a skin is done there is the next update and
everything starts from the beginning. Allot of half baked plugins and so on...
No offense to JR - quite the contrary.
Just looking for the best and always have allot of ideas how to improve things.

I wish somebody would take the best from all what is out there and combine it.
With the words from my favorite movie: "we're gonna need a bigger boot" ;D

OT: For example just found out that JR does not stack movies and plays them as one
like XBMC does since a long time.
name-cd1.avi, name-cd2.avi, name-cd3.avi...

Edit
@Listener,
sure "the changes in the Tag window apply to the files that are currently selected"
but that was not the point of my first posting.

Call it pop up or look at for example Photoshop or ImgBurn where you can detach/attach.
My point is more about looking at it and see everything with one look without the
need to click through a accordion and scroll all the time.

Oh, and just realized that this immediate change if you change a tag what you
call "simpler" is something i personally don't like.
i prefer seeing everything at one look that i can doublecheck what i have in the
fields with what i see for example on the webpage on my secondary monitor and
then hit apply/ok.
Now i never know where to click to leave the field after the change.
Also I make changes and after a view there is this:
"oh did i already change this and that - did i already put the right text in this and that field"
and the scrolling starts again ;D
