Feedback on the Too Easy Thread
« on: November 09, 2014, 05:50:25 pm »

I started a thread called Too Easy a few days ago, asking for suggestions for simple changes we could make to make MC easier to use.

This week or next, we'll start to work on some of the suggestions.  I've added comments in red to some that are obviously good or have potential.  We may not get all of them done.

I'm starting this thread so you can comment on the process.

Thanks for your help.

There are lots of great ideas in that list. Some that have been requested for a long time, so I'm sure there will be a lot of happy users out there.

Thanks for listening JRiver... :)

Perhaps the implemented suggestions could be asterisked in the Build Thread to make them easier to notice.

Thanks for the items that have been added so far:

NEW: Added Options > Libraries & Folders > Run first use import on empty libraries.
NEW: Composer is a linkable column.
Changed: Added 'Clear Playing Now' to the right-click menu of the Playing Now list.
Changed: The search box is wider when there's a lot of available width.

As often happens, a few ideas popped up over the weekend. I know the topic was locked, but they seem like easy changes:

  • Save the state of the vertical split on a per-view basis.
  • Support YouTube RSS feeds
  • Rating weight bias

...maybe a regular new request "window" for 1-2 weeks at the start of each month?

A great idea and process!

Where else can you build customer loyalty, improve customization, highlight recent and emerging trends, and garner proposed fixes in bite sized chunks.

Genius!

Regarding this: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=93038.msg642539#msg642539

How about being able to set the default per film, as well as still globally (per film overrules global).

I was playing with some settings earlier while watching Apocalypto (quitting playback in between).  My default is No Subtitles so every time I had to manually turn them on.

If I could have set them for this film that would have been great.  Maybe changing the option during playback (by using the up/down arrows to get to the subtitles setting) should update the default setting for the film.  Certainly set it if it doesn't exist so it remembers for next time without actually having to 'manually' go and set it outside of playback.

Make sense?

Has everything on the list been covered that is going to be addressed or are you taking a little break (there haven't been updates to that thread for several days)?

I think there have been 8 or 10 of these done in the last week.  Some are in the release notes.

Jim, do you have any thoughts on my post just above?

I think this would be a killer feature (remembering last selected audio/subs track per film).  My copy of Brave on DVD for some reason defaults to 2.0 stereo, so I have to change it either in the DVD's menu system or after the fact during playback. Every time.  When you have a 2 year old who watches stuff in 10 minute intervals over many days it does get a bit tedious.

I have had others where it has selected the audio commentary track.

Yes, I know.  Matt has been updating the Too Easy thread but this has stopped.  I am wondering if you are done or will you be addressing more on the list?

I think Jim has been pretty clear: they are not going to be doing any other usability fixes other than those already stated. They have a huge load of things to cover in MC20 already bringing video, burning etc to linux and mac. Until those two platforms are feature comparable to windows, they are going to be putting a lot of their resources there. They only have so many staff...

We're not finished.

The Pono beta test has taken a lot of resources the last few weeks.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting they should work on this as a priority, just as and when some of the more important stuff gets finished.

Just read the whole thread. Some great ideas. Especially the saving views to the cloud feature. That could really separate MC from the competition once Video has been implemented on all the platforms.
