Long pause.. Video playback switches to next file
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:58:13 am »

Has been an issue with the last few builds.

I have Video files on a WD my cloud drive. If I leave a file paused for a long period of time.(few hours), when I press play to restart ...will start playing the next file in the playlist. If I click on the initial file, I get message "starting up hard drive". If I click on the initial file again, JRiver will go to not responding. Will take a minute or so, before it resets itself and I can start the playing the video again.

Any idea's....has been very annoying

your drive is resting after that long of a time of no movement on it...its best to just stop MC at this point as it will start up where you left off as long as you dont close it....another good idea is to put a text file in that drive and open it before restarting your movie, this will wake up the hard drive then you can restart your movie.

Will try that,  but have been doing this for many years without issue(it started with the build that had the "drive spinning" message). Can't figure out why the next show in playlist will start instantly...and play perfectly as long as I don't click anything....Seems to be a build issues with JR. No other media player I have tried does this.

And it seems like with the latest build....if a video is paused for even a couple of minutes, I cannot simply restart it without issues.

What was said above is the most likely cause of the problem.

your drive is resting after that long of a time of no movement on it...its best to just stop MC at this point as it will start up where you left off as long as you dont close it.

Perhaps, but the other day, I reverted to an older version and the problem went away...Seem like whenever the "drive starting" message was put in was when the issue started.  Is this just something I now have to deal with?

And just some info on why this is annoying......I watch full TV series in order...so If I leave it paused for a while, when I press play and the next episode starts, the beginning usually starts with what happened on the previous episode. There is nothing I can do for 10 to 20 seconds, except hit the volume and turn away.
Sure there are ways around this, but not being able to use a pause button seems odd to me.

Can you not disable the feature where hard drives turn off after X amount of minutes? I know in Windows you can under power settings but I'm not sure if you can with an external cloud drive or not.

Thanks, not sure how to turn that off with a WD drive....but this was never an issue before a recent JR release....and it does not act this way for any other media player I have tried.

There was a bug fixed recently where we'd unintentionally access every drive on the system over and over, which would spin them up.

Now that's fixed, but it might change the drive sleeping behavior.

Also, Windows 8.1 (if that's what you're running) is pretty aggressive about sleeping hard drives, especially external drives.  Read these two threads for some tips.  I would not recommend that NoSleep application, though, as that's going to bork up drive performance (and seems like a hack-job anyway).

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/windows-81-causes-external-hard-drives-to-auto/c03b9212-9972-44b9-bfec-1cd7e70ec67e

http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hardware/4710-secondary-hard-drive-goes-sleep.html

It seems like if setting the Power Options to Never doesn't work (and on 8.1 it sounds like it often doesn't), then set it to a really high number like 600 minutes.

Thanks for the reply....read through those threads and also tried changing power option. Still same behaviour.

My question remains though. Why is it only JR that does this...and only since a recent release...and why does it skip to the next file instantly and play perfectly...that indicates to me that the drive is "awake". Can leave other players paused for long periods of time without issue. I tried the most recent release with this fix...

20.0.73 (2/17/2015)
4. Fixed: Starting video playback could hang

Still same results.

Thanks for your time.

Leaving the delay issue aside - What button do you press for "Play" (causing the video jumping to the next playlist item rather than un-pausing) is it on a standard WMC remote, the on-screen controls, or something you have mapped? Could the button "play" command be mapped incorrectly?

Just clicking the play/pause button with mouse. Very basic setup. Using Z skin

Also, if nothing is paused, I can start playing any other video instantly.

Not meaning to be annoying....but this is still an issue for me. All I want is to be able to pause a video.....like I have done for years. Have done some research and it is only JR that does this....plus I have tried playing videos with other media players first(so drive is active)...but pause still does not work...starts playing next video in playlist.

I'm not entirely convinced this is a drive sleeping issue.  That might be a red herring.

The most useful thing you can do to test if the issue cropped up in a recent MC build is to reinstall an older build.  I think the change that could (and shouldn't really, but could) impact sleeping drives was done in 20.0.63 or 64, so you'd be best off trying one before that.

If the problem vanishes, then we know it was something that changed in MC (and not something that incidentally changed about your system in the interim, which could certainly be the case).

Thanks, had already tried older version (think it was .53) and problem went away.

Can you narrow it down any further?

MC 20.0.62 is available here and is the build just before the drive seeking bug was quashed:

Is there anything else you need from me for troubleshooting? Or do I have to stay with this build for the foreseeable future?

Actually, I should clarify. The problem still exists with build 62. It was an earlier build 20.0.52 that make the problem go away. I had been testing with the wrong build. Sorry.

We're on build 80 now.
I've suggested it before, but I think it would be useful if a manually initiated update, rather than an auto-update, would always download from the latest branch.
If a user is specifically checking for updates manually, they are probably troubleshooting a problem and have been instructed to get the "latest" version.

???Still looking for help on this. WMP can pause for days at a time. JR will crash if I pause for a few hours...Anybody????.....I'm pretty sure I have deducted that it is ONLY a JR problem.
Have tried other media players as well, and have had no issues. Is there a ticket system that I can use. Seems crazy that if you have no idea that you just don't respond.. I have tried everything suggested.

If it crashes, could you post a crash log from Help > Logging?  Thanks.

Shall do...should I start logging before I pause a video, or wait until I try to start it again. Perhaps I used the wrong terminology, but It does not actually crash, but times out for 3 or 4 minutes.(screen goes white)

If it doesn't crash, I don't think a log will help.  Sorry.

You could send one anyway to logs at jriver dot com, but I really don't know if it'll show anything.

If it isn't caused by a sleeping drive (which seems unlikely since it does play for 20 minutes) then I'd suspect disk problems.

Read:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Network_and_Slow_Storage
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Disks

If it doesn't go away with build 62, then it isn't related to the sleeping disk change that happened then.  Still though, it is very odd that the problem vanishes with build 52.  You're sure about that bit?
