DTS-HD MA won't play
« on: April 15, 2015, 02:13:42 pm »

I am trying to play back an .mkv file (BR rip) that has DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio, but MC throws an error saying the audio format is not playable and to go to DSP settings and make some changes.

Now - I am aware of the process to put that Arcsoft dll into place for DTS stuff - but I have MC set to bitstream everything when playing in the Video zone. I thought no additional files were needed when bitstreaming. And I am 100% certain my Marantz av7701 has no issues with DTS-HD MA.

Any ideas on why MC is suddenly throwing an error on this file?

My guess is that the DSP Output Format is not set for "source number of channels" and/or for the sample rate in use on the disk to be "No Change".

I think the issue is that we don't bitstream when playing audio.

So you'll need to adjust DSP Studio > Output Format to a format that works with your hardware.

You may be right. I had my DSP channels setting on 5.1 - I am just completing some updates to the HTPC and will test this change back to "source number of channels" shortly.

I think the issue is that we don't bitstream when playing audio. So you'll need to adjust DSP Studio > Output Format to a format that works with your hardware.

The error reads as follows:

Playback could not be started on the select audio output. The audio format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format...

Is this error making reference to the fact that maybe my HTPC HDMI connection cannot "handle" DTS-HD MA coming down the pipe or is it the Marantz that's a block? I know the av7701 is fully compatible with DTS so it must be the PC?

But I do not ever recall seeing "DTS-HD MA" as a format to change from within DSP Studio. Where would I see this to change it?

Just start with changing everything to 44.1k and stereo.  Then work backwards from there once it's working.

Try source number of channels first.

I just tried playing a DTS-HD MA BR rip with bitstreaming(SP/DIF) and MC20 automatically pulls out the DTS 1.5 core and uses it.

So it seems likely the only problem is that you had it set for 5.1 while playing 7.1 .

Switched back to Source Number of channels and that failed again

So I moved to Output Format.

Switched everything to No Change = Fail
Switched everything to 44.1 = Fail

What next?

I left MC using Source Number Of Channels. I certainly do not want my DTS-HD MA rip playing back in just two channels...do i?

Until it works, yes.  That's exactly what you want.

Alrighty then. Switching "Channels" to Stereo....with Sample Rate set to 44.1 across the board.

and...fail.

Does music play at 44.1 and stereo?

Because it's really a mystery that video wouldn't play at that unless there's just something baked about your sound card.

Been playing music all day long.

Note: This HTPC use the Intel HD4000 HDMI interface (Motherboard) for everything.

Every other movies (Including prior DTS rips/Dolby Digital etc) and music play just fine.

If you have MediaInfo, you should paste that (from running it on the MKV file) as well.

This is getting worse. Now I have lost all audio on all sources from the HTPC.

EDIT: Fixed.

Now to check this file.

Here's the MediaInfo on the BR rip..

ID : 2
Format : DTS
Format/Info : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile : MA / Core
Mode : 16
Format settings, Endianness : Big
Codec ID : A_DTS
Duration : 1h 50mn
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : Unknown / 1 509 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 24 bits
Compression mode : Lossless / Lossy
Language : English
Default : Yes
Forced : No

Weird thing is that I have numerous DTS rips that play fine. Just wondering if any of them are actually DTS-HD MA....

Maybe it's an issue with the file itself?

I have the same problem tonight, some DTS-HD MA files are completely silent and show as silent in the dsp studio analyser. These are files that were playing fine the other night. Music playback seems unaffected.

I would love even silent :)

Mine just throws an error and refuses to play at all.

Did you select DTS-HD bitstreaming in the options? If yes, thats not going to work, since you are using SPDIF.
You would only want to select normal DTS, and MC would automatically bitstreaming the DTS core out of those HD files.

I do have DTS-HD checked under Bitstreaming->Custom...

But under Settings->Bitstreaming - my settings are "Yes (HDMI)" since my default "device" is set to OPP1105-RPT (Intel Display Audio) - which is the HDMI interface on this ASUS motherboard in the HTPC.

Bitstreaming with an HDMI device as default - should handle DTS-HD - should it not?

Or should I set my Bitstreaming = SPDIF?

That log says:
Quote
0836244: 1432: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Open: Device: Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio Device); Exclusive: 1; Event style: 1
which is why Hendrix said that you had S/PDIF selected.

The log excerpt you posted was using a SPDIF device, using the HDMI bitstreaming option will not work there.

True dat.

However - just after I posted the log snippet - I realized I was sending audio to the wrong device and switched it back to where it's supposed to go - the HDMI port.

That returned the audio for all the rest of my movies.

Anyhoo - even with the HDMI port now correctly set - the file still fails with the same audio message. Should I untick DTS-HD anyway and see if that changes it up?

The MediaInfo that you posted is not for DTS-HD MA, it is just for the lossey core.

What other sections in Mediainfo should I be looking at?

I checked on a BR rip to MKV and the section:

Quote
Bit rate : Unknown / 1 509 Kbps

instead has a number ahead of the slash. and the channels says "8 channels/6 channels" instead of yours which just says six channels.

So, the lossless part of that rip is probably faulty.

To just playback the file, it might work if you change DTS-HD to just DTS as explained above in the thread, then you will get the lossey audio.
