JRiver MC 20/Mac DSD files can be played
« on: April 29, 2015, 09:31:31 pm »

I followed below set-up steps to check whether DSD files can be played or not at the JRiver program.

However it doesn’t work. There is only noise.

I thought that DAC(XMOS) had some problems, so I asked the manufacturer.

They said that it worked well at Audirvana Plus without any problem.

When I use JRiver with DAC(XMOS) at Windows Version, DSD files can be played well.

For your information, I attached my SET-UP and a video which showed once DSD was played at MAC.
(For reference, when DSD is played, there is only noise or cut off.)

P.S. 1. I installed USB Herb but it cannot be played as well.
P.S. 2. I installed another Mac Air but is cannot be played as well. (only noise)

However, once I turn off DSD, it plays well.

Please check these, and response me.

Thank you.

I am using a XMOS DAC Ayon Stealth is also having the same problem playing DSF files.

1. Plays only noise with the following setup.
-XMOS
-Bit Streaming DSD
-Conversion - None
-Shows DSD on DAC.

2. Plays OK but seems to be converted DSF to PCM to DSF
-XMOS
-Bit Streaming None
-Conversion DSD DOP
-Shows DSD on DAC.
-However, all PCM files also get converted to DSD which I do not want.

I thought that bit streaming should be on DSD?

Can help?

Am on JRMC20 on OSX.

To be clear, if Tools > Options > Audio > Settings > Bitstreaming is set to DSD, then MC does not decode the DSD files at all and sends them directly as-is to your DAC. This means your DAC needs to be able to understand the exact file format provided. Playing "static" is the typical failure case for playing a format that a DAC does not understand.

Media Center can also decode DSD files to PCM and send the PCM to your device. If this is what you want, then you need to have the bitstreaming turned OFF.

You can also set Media Center to send ALL otherwise unsupported audio to your DAC in DSD formats via the DSP > Output Format > Output Encoding tool.  But that would only apply to PCM audio which is processed by MC's audio engine (stuff not bitstreamed), and is probably not a good idea unless your DAC requires it (I agree with 6233638 on this).

So, I'm not sure what you have set up here, and I don't really know very much about DSD.  It may be that your DAC is not compatible with the format, or that the driver you've used to set it up is not compatible.  For it to work with MC, your DAC must support DSD over DOP.

For caiper in particular, it sounds like it is misconfigured (and that converting to DSD is enabled in Output Format).  As I said, that's almost certainly NOT what you want, and that setting will not apply to any DSD-native files.  Hopefully this helps.

You need to configure the setup under Tools > Options > Media Network.  Have you done this?

I had no problems in playing dsd/iso files until yesterday, so i haven't changed any configuration.
Can you please share the settings?

I didn't notice the "until yesterday".  If you didn't change anything in your setup for MC, it sounds like your DAC or your network is probably having trouble.  Have you tried restarting both your DAC and your router?

To bitstream DSD over DLNA, your DLNA Server must be set to do this.  This is done in:
Tools > Options > Media Network > Add or configure DLNA servers and then enable Bitstream DSD under Advanced in the setup for your DLNA Server:

Looks like there was a bug with bitstreaming DSD in combination with the 6db boost feature:

That's almost certainly the cause of your "white noise" issues here (but probably not the DLNA one).

For some reason the bitstream DSD box was checked.
Unchecked and good to go now.
Thank you.

Tried the same and still getting noise when DSD box is checked?
Problem fixed by unchecking the 6db gain option in the dsd plugin.
Bitstream dsd
Pcm up convert to 1xdsd
Everything's works fine now but will await the bug fix. :)
