movies with 2 parts
« on: May 03, 2015, 01:23:36 pm »

Hi,

I did try to search for this but had no luck finding the answer so far.

I have 3 movies that come in 2 parts... (the Lord of the Rings extended cuts)... I want to see them as simply 3 movies and have them play part 2 just after part 1 like they were one file.

Someone recommended choosing the files then selecting LINK ... I did that but it didn't seem to change anything.

Other software called this "Stacking" and I did find some info about Stacking in JRiver but only audio stuff.

This is a functionality which I was also asking for.
But the answers so far were unsatisfactory.
Currently you just can't do it the way you like to do it (just like me).

What format are your movies in. I used mkv for the Lord of the Rings and muxed the 2 parts together to create a single file. Mkvnix tools is fab for this.

(as a reply to MasterJoe)_

That's very surprising because when I play a video it tends to say part 1 of 1 sometimes in the GUI at the bottom of the screen.

Given that .... seems there should be a way to define something with many (or at least 2) parts.

Yep... I use MakeMKV for everything and it makes ....... mkv. I have read some people "append" these files together... I will look into it.

Just FYI - You can use the 'Stack' feature if you like. You need to select the files in reverse order. i.e. last section first. Then right click and choose "stack". When playing stacks, you need to click the "Play Stack" command, not the regular 'play' button. I haven't tried the 'link' method, as I no longer have multi-part vids.
Of course, joining the .mkv's is best of all, but if someone had lots of multi-part movies, it does offer the ability to play them seamlessly.

There are several guides on how to merge them seamlessly so they play as one long film without a break or fade to black between parts.

Nice work Bartman. Have you read the posts in this link? This is EXACTLY why I want MC to do it automatically:

(...) "Unfortunately I neglected to continue with the other movies yet. It was a long process, and encoding them took almost 48 hours on my hardware, so it was tying up my computer for too long."

I do not have the time to merge hundreds (yes, I have hundreds of multi parts from films!) of files manually! MC could do it automatically and on the fly!

Linked Tracks might work.  It's about half way down the page here:

I'm not sure whether it can be used with video.

Using link tracks works fine for movies. It is best if you use a playback range on each movie for the start/stop times. If you use Red October HQ, the cover art will flash in between the transition. With Red October Standard it will transition a lot better.
