I recently wrote the very nice
Rename, Move, and Copy Files article. It came out well, I think. One thing was plain to me throughout, however.
It would be better in every way if RMCF operations ran in the Action Window, with:
* A progress indicator
* A cancel button which functioned as an Undo.
I understand that it is a tagging operation, and tagging operations display in the
Status Display. I'm not arguing that. But RMCF is special, and always involves moving or copying. Sometimes it is fast (renaming from one location to another on the same disk) but often it is
slow (copying or moving from one disk to another).
It is also such a potentially damaging operation (if you mess it all up because you didn't read my guide), so you need Undo.
Undo actually
does work. I've used it before with quick-rename operations that went awry. But there is nothing more terror-prone than being partially through a 6 hour long, big, mistaken, disk-to-disk RMCF operation and needing to hit Control-Z and undo it. I
think you can undo while the operation is in-progress, but I'm not even sure. What if you'd subsequently (while it was running) done other stuff with MC? What does it Undo?
In any case, a cancel button that rolls back changes is warranted, and a progress bar is warranted. I understand it might not be the simplest of tasks to do, but it shouldn't really be super-crazy-difficult (you can do it for other operations), and it is worth it, I think.
