How about Petitioning Netflix
« on: June 08, 2015, 04:07:57 am »

Hi all .
Like alot of us I love JRiver because it is satisfies my media needs in
the form of 1 interface , for me gone are the days of using 1 software
for audio 1 for video 1 for streaming and so on.
In a desire to do the right thing regards digital content  I have signed on
to Netflix only to discover that they (Netflix) have removed the ability to have the
software integrated within theater view. This pisses me off and is a real deal
breaker for the streaming service.
Now my thought is this if there is a lot of mc users who feel the same way
would anybody be interested and know how to go about presenting them(Netflix) with
a petition to allow it to be put back.
cheers

Blame Netflix, not JRiver.

Netflix is the one that dropped support by closing their API, except to only specific partners.

Thanks I'll edit this in case it is ambiguous.
The petition idea is to netflix not jriver.

it may behoove us to maybe have two petitions?
1 for those who want it, and 1 for those who HAD IT until they removed it?

you can add my votes to both. the day it no longer worked for us we emailed/and called them, and then cancelled our services with them.

Also if i may add... maybe there is a petition site out there, where this could expand past jriver? (all media players that once had it incorporated, and now don't .. maybe the numbers would be much more considerable?)

+1 from the UK too.

Even when you guys had it working, we still couldn't use it. I cancelled and told them why. I don't think first level support even understood what I was saying!

I cancelled and told them why.

Unfortunately, I think this is the only thing that will create real change with any of these streaming services.

I read Nilay Patel's recent diatribe about platform lock-in and it made me laugh. Turns out he was a bit wrong about Apple's service, but the point stands. If you don't like the platform lock in, but you participate in any of these services, you only have yourself to blame.

If they got no users, they wouldn't do it.

And that, in a nutshell, is why I'm not a Netflix, Spotify, Tidal, or insert-whatever-crappy-restricted-drm-encrusted-streaming-service you want customer. I can buy a whole lot of music for $120/year. And you know what? It works on all of my devices. Ancient ones, and ones yet unannounced. And if I stop paying? I still have all of the crap I already have. Topping it off, streaming services are generally good for record labels, and bad for artists. Forget all that noise.

MC has the best streaming service there is: Ad free and no monthly cost.

You could just launch the Netflix 8/8.1 app from JRiver. It's much better than what JRiver have/had. Sorry JRiver guys but it's true :)

I actually have a "Netflix" button scripted on a button on my remote to open JRiver and then select the IPC (WDM driver) and then launch the Windows 8.1 Netflix app.

How are you doing that?  Do you have the instructions posted anywhere?  I'd like to give this a shot.

Is this opening up within MC or does it open up a browser outside of MC?  In other words if I'm in MC Theater View and go to a menu item called Netflix, can I run this?  If you could give me a bit more info I'd appreciate it!

Ok, I got the desktop shortcut to see how it works but I haven't got the slightest idea how to get that into MC.  Would you be so kind as to perhaps type up the instructions on how to get that into MC?

On a serious note, is there actually anything JRiver (and others) themselves can actually do once they've been locked out?  Is it a cost thing, that smaller vendors can't pay?

I personally emailed Amazon (Instant Video) about opening up the API to media player vendors.  I suspect if enough customers do this it might at least make them think about it?

It's not working for me.   >:(

What exactly is in your bat file?  Just netflix:///?

Also in Theater View are you using Add, External Program?  I did that and pointed it to my bat file that contained netflix:///.  I also tried putting in explorer.exe netflix:///.  Still didn't work.

I found the following that has a launcher that you can launch from TheaterView.  Download version 1 and not 2.  Then rename the non desktop version to Netflix.  Seems to work pretty well.  It launches the Netflix metro app, then when you close it, goes back to Theater View.

I assume though, because that is launching an external App, that you need to use the MC WDM Driver to get sound into MC. Otherwise the App will control the sound, and you will be limited to whatever capabilities it has.

What audio is available from Netflix? Just stereo, or 5.1, 7.1, DD AC-3. etc.? Can it output audio in Exclusive mode? Because the WDM Driver input will need to be set to the same as the Netflix source, otherwise DirectSound will get into the act somewhere along the way, transcoding your audio.

Perhaps the petition was a better idea...

I will +1 the petition on principle, but I'm not a Netflix user, yet.

I can always join the petition, but I view the chance of Netflix changing based on it to be as good as zero.
