MC23 suddenly crashes on startup
« on: September 11, 2017, 08:56:05 am »

Hi,

Since today MC 23 crashes with the Windows pop-up "Media Center has stopped working" a few seconds after its launch.

I have send my log files by email.

Here is what I found in the dump file:

We need the full Dump file, which is included in the log zip by default. A text extract doesn't help us.

Try powering everything down and back up, including all of the network, and any devices connected to it.

Other possibilites:
Antivirus problem
Hardware or driver problem

I have sent those files by mail with a link to this thread. The extract here is from the Windows dump file, not the log files from JRiver.

Well I've rebootrf and the problem is still here. I have already tried with my antivirus disabled - JRiver is excluded from the AV anyway. No hardware change or new driver, no exclamation point in the device manager. Local library, JRiver straight to the PC speakers, nothing fancy.

I retry with all the network off.

If it is antivirus, disabling it may not be enough.  Uninstall to test.

Disconnect any devices from the machine.

Thanks for your advices.

Unfortunately I can't get rid of the situation: MC23 still crashes even with no network and with only my mouse and keyboard connected. I didn't want to but ultimately I've uninstalled Kaspersky and... crash.

Any info in the logs/dump file? I add that the extract of the Windows dump file on my first post contains all the debugging results Windows SDK gave me, text above was just redundant info on my system.

OK so it seems that I managed to get rid of the problem by myself by launching MC23 and quickly disable auto-import in background: no crash. Then I've looked closely at the files added to my music collection last night and I've found a bunch of MP3 files wrongly named, like "._6 Mr Noah.mp3", and an excel document (I have JRiver set to Audio only). I've deleted those files and manually launched import : no more crash. Then re-enable auto-import in background: still no more crash.

This is annoying because I don't see any evidence of import error neither in the log files nor the Windows dump file. I've tried to reproduce the problem by reimporting the presumably faulty files, but all I have is a "Failed to import" message in the import details of MC23, no crash.

Not much to understand for me, it's a bit frustrating.

._6 Mr Noah.mp3
I don't think that's a legal file name, is it?

It is... It's the rehearsal demos of the album Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper, non commercialized.

That may be, but Windows filenames have a base name and an extension, separated by a period.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247(v=vs.85).aspx

There are two periods in that name.

Periods in names are fully valid. Most my videos use them. Maybe it's a problem with the period at the front, will test. Crashing is never acceptable.
