I see that I have a lot of .jpg files for album art and many are duplicates. this is taking up valuable space. If I delete all the .jpg's I assume I will not see the album anymore, is that correct?

not sure what you mean, but the album is the music files not the jpg.  you can delete them if you like and it shouldn't change anything

The size of JPG files is going to be very small compared to FLACs and small even compared to a 320kpbs MP3.  I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. 

If you delete a JPG file that MC is using for the album cover, then the cover will show up as a blue music note instead of the real album cover.

OK, that's what I thought. If I delete the jpegs the album art won't show up. But it seems to download duplicates is there a way to easily get rid of all the duplicates to reduce the amount of memory being used?

I have a follow-up question just so I understand exactly how the album art gets attached to the music file. When I use Media Center to search for the correct album art does it bring it in as a separate file to jpeg or does it attach it to the music file as a tag?

^ That behavior is controlled by these settings:

Tools > Options > File Location > Cover Art > Audio Mode > (choose)
and
Tools > Options > File Location > Cover Art > Also store image in file's tag > (check to save image inside file)

I'm not sure why you are concerned about disk space used by JPGs.  They are tiny in comparison to the music files.  Plus hard drives are cheap.

Agreed, but I have over 6,000 of these type of files and I'm not exactly sure how much space is taking but I just want understand better how the album art is attached to the music files. If they're not necessary I'd like to kind of get rid of them. If they're critical then I'll keep them but there's a lot of duplicates

Can you give an example of the duplicates you see?  I haven't seen this behavior with MC.

I *have* seen downloaded albums that come with art work.  Sometimes 3, 4, or more JPGs.  Many times these files are not named in such a way that MC can use any of them for album art. Other times, they *are* named properly.

Sure, here is a good example:
In one folder, these 4 files exist that are not a music file:

Those might be thumbnails.  Maybe created by another program.

Based on my personal Cover Art folder, the average storage size based on the ratio of files to size, for 6,000 JPG files is approximately 548MB (see image).

These, I believe, are from Windows media player rips. They tend to be trivial in size. It's probably safe to delete all but 'folder.jpg'. I've done this in my collection with no issues.

Renaming would be safer than deleting.  Delete later if there are no problems.

In my case, these appear to be embedded files in mp3s (see images), which are not part of my MC environment. These are admin/miscellaneous files. I traced the path of the subject mp3 file, Louie, Louie by The Kingsmen, in the images attached so you can see that the subject AlbumArt file is embedded but not listed in the file directory. First, I searched for files that began with 'AlbumArt_{' and opened up the small and large target JPG files. Second, I proceeded to the target file directory and located the associated mp3 file. Third, I displayed the 'Properties' dialog window, displayed the ID-Tag tab, and then displayed the 'Front Album Cover' artwork.
