Trouble Connecting with Access Key
« on: January 08, 2018, 06:59:22 pm »

I have successfully installed JRemote but now I am trying to get the Editing feature to work in the Remote.  I would like to edit metadata on a few songs but keep getting an error.  I followed the instructions in this post, "check Authentication," the entered my credentials.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Windows updates could do that.  Try rebooting everything.

I am using an iMac computer.  Yesterday I went through the setup process for JRemote and everything was successful no problems.  Then I logged out of my computer and when I went to log back in and open JRiver again.  The JRemote lost it’s connection with the server.  after trying a few times I undid everything on JRiver and closed the program and removed the JRemote app from my phone.  The next day I tried it all over again (installed the app, loaded JRiver on computer) and went through the process again.  It still won’t connect.

Make sure you're using the correct Access Key.  The wiki has a topic on Access Key.

You could use Panel in a browser to see what happens.

The access key is correct but is there a way to get a new access key?  Maybe when i logged out it forgot the access key. I know other programs that do that. As soon as you log out that program generates a new access key you need. Would uninstalling JRiver MC23 and then reinstalling it make any difference?

Is Media Center or Media Server running?

It's most likely that a firewall is blocking on the server.

A typo in the Access Key is also possible.

Media Center and server are both running. I have now turned off my firewall and triple checked the access key. Still no luck.

Try using Panel and connecting to the machine using the IP address.  That will tell you something.

Not having very good luck lol.  the Panel site keeps timing out.  I entered in http://[My IP_Address]:52199 and it keeps timing out.  Then I tried https://jriver.com/panel.html
and entered the access key that JRiver gave me, selected "Inside My Network" first, it timed out, then selected "Outside My Network" and it timed out again.  I attempted all these on both my phone and my computer.  MC and server are both running.  Have any other tricks up your sleeve? lol

Are you trying to connect from inside your network?  Or from the Internet (outside)?

Did you set up authentication on the server?  Login/password.

Did you try using the IP address for Panel instead of the Access Key.  The Panel topic has instructions.

That's only necessary for a connection from the outside.

The wiki has a topic called Network Access.

Try the localhost method for Panel.  That may help diagnose the problem.

1.  I bought JRemote for the purpose of streaming and editing my library from work so i suppose that would be outside my network
2. I did set up the authentication. When i try adding the server on jremote i have tried WITH the authentication and WITHOUT, along with the access key of course. . seeing if it made a difference.
3.  I tried both the access key method and the IP Address method for panel

If you are trying to connect from work, it could be a work firewall issue.  You may not be permitted to make connections on that port.  You can move the MC server to another port.

If you open a browser on your machine at home, when you're in front of it, you can type:  localhost:52199 and that should show you Panel.

I will try the localhost when i get home. I have never tried it at work “yet”. It stopped connecting about 10 mins after i initially connected. As soon as i logged out of my user at home it has never been able to connect at home again. Its almost like just logging out for a sec flipped a switch somewhere. Really strange it is this much of an issue all started with just closing jriver for a sec.

The topic on Network Access should tell you everything you need to know:

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access

It's also possible your network isn't configured correctly.  Two machines using the same IP address, for example.

If you describe your network, someone may be able to help you.

So you're trying to connect from inside the network.  That's good.  Get that working first before you try connecting from outside.

There is a test you could try in the Media Network section.  Click on the Access Key to see it.

I reading through the Access Key wiki page you sent me. Understanding some of it lol. I tested the access key and found out my access key cannot connect outside the network. Ok that tells me something. Will have to fix that later, may need to move ports. Now just for the hell of it i went into the jremote app from work using my iphone SE and tried to connect via access key. Of course that didnt work. Then i tried via my home ip address still nothing. Something caught my eye you may be able to explain. In the “connection fail report” it detected two ip addresses. Neither of which are my home ip address. So where are these two addresses from. That may be part of my problem.

In Google, when at home, type whatsmyip.  That will show you the outside address of your network.

Oh i apologize. Yes it is detecting my wifi and computer but timing out. But i am guessing my problem lies in the “not being able to connect outside my network issue”

What are the addresses?  Leave off the last segment.  For example, if you see:

192.168.0.15, just report it here as 192.168.0.x.

If the test can't connect to the internal address, when you're connecting to your LAN locally, then something is wrong with the networking.

Does the machine you're trying to connect to have more than one network interface?  Does the LAN have more than one segment?

Have you tried this web page yet?

https://jriver.com/panel.html

Add your access key and change location to "Inside my Network"

Do you get a pop up which asks for your username and password? Check pop ups aren't being blocked...

As you can see, trying to connect inside and outside network while at home, on both firefox and safari, it timed out. Tried it on my computer at home and it worked but that doesnt really help me in the sense i am wanting to stream away from home lol

Try http://192.168.1.138:52199

Try http://localhost:52199 from the machine where MC is running.

I missed the part where you said it worked at home.  If the inside address works at home, then the rest is a network problem.  The Network Access topic tells you what you need to know.

You will need to know how to open your router/modem firewall on whatever port you use
and
You will need to configure the router/modem to forward inbound packets for that port to the machine where MC is running.
