Greetings. Noob here. Just bought a Sony970 and Sony570 for home. Had problems with video, just like everyone else. Found this site via Google after having no luck with several products like WMP, TVersity, iMediaShare, et al. So, I called Sony...
Here's a little background on my call: I told Sony that I had taken photos and video on my Sony CyberShot camera. They play fine on the camera. I told them that I copied those files onto my Sony laptop, where they also played fine in Windows Picture Viewer and WMP-11. I told them I then turned on sharing in WMP-11 to share them via DLNA to my BD devices. As expected, my PC shows up in the server menu and I can see and navigate to my shared folders no problem. I can also view my photos on my Sony TV via my Sony BD and listen to MP3 music as well. When I navigate to the videos tab, I can see the shared folder, but I cannot play and of the videos. It says "No playable files."
So, the people at Sony first told me that the 970 and 570 do not offer this feature via DLNA. So, I sent them a jpg of section from the manual and the url of the specification page from their SonyStyle site. AFter that BS was out of the way, the additonal BS continued...
I went all the way up the chain with Sony Tech. After 3 hours and 6 techs, I was told that the problem had to due with the security and anti-piracy features Sony has put into their DNLA feature set. They are aware of the problem but have not said what they plan to do to fix it.
Basically, I was told that Sony has done the following to prevent piracy: If you have a video, it needs to be DLNA certified and/or copied to a DLNA certified device. That way they can make sure it is not a pirated copy of the media. It then must be "rendered" or shared from a DLNA certified player, again to make sure it was not pirated. It can then be sent to a DLNA certified Sony BD or Sony TV that is also DLNA certified - making sure it was not pirated. The Sony "lab guy" told me that if the cerification is broken anywhere along the chain, the video will not play - aka "No Playable File."
Whatever...
So, I said: "You mean to tell me that if I take a video on my Sony camera and transfer it to my Sony laptop and then try to play it on my Sony BD/TV, it will not play via DLNA?" He said, "Not if all of those devices are not DLNA certified."
Interesting: Because, "I can to do the exact same thing and play them to a Samsung BD using the Samsung Media Share Suite and they play fine."
He said, "It's a Sony and MicroSoft thing. I suggest you should use something other than WMP-11/12."
Great. Well, I have since tried TVersity and a few other and I am still having the same problem. Likewise, I have even tried to take MocroSoft and WMP-11 out of the equation. I loaded Twonky Server on my Motorola Droid. I can share all of my photos/music/videos via DLNA. Same thing, I can view my photos and play my MP3 files on my BD/TV just fine. But, when I try to play video, I get the same message: "No playable files."
Once again, Sony told me: "Yeah. You can't play video unless every device in the chain is DLNA certified."
I asked, "Then, why can I take either of those devices and plug them into the USB port on the front of my BD and the videos play fine?" Sony told me, "It's a DLNA cerification issue."
That's when I finally gave up and ended the call...
So, here I sit with two new Sony BD players that will not stream video, regardless of the source. Not sure what more I can do at this point, other than upgrading my storage to a DLNA certified NAS and/or exchanging my players to Samsung devices.
Anyone have any other suggestions???
