Fix for some bad CD burns
« on: September 12, 2003, 04:21:44 am »

We've seen this before, but it's worth bringing this to the top for a while.

Thanks, Z, for posting the fix.

[ZRocker's post moved from the 9.1.250 thread]

Bug:
1. CD Burning performance has gone south (sometime in the last 2 or 3 weeks of MC releases).  Now when I burn a CD using MC, my sytems crawls to a halt, MC uses 75% of the CPU during the burn and I can't listen to tracks in MC at the same time (too choppy/studdering).  Sounds like some 'fixes' to CD/DVD burning in the last few weeks went 'bad'.

Update:
Nevermind...the infamous Windows DMA / PIO Mode switch occurred on me...must have been during Win2K SP4 install 2+ weeks ago.  This hasn't happened in 2+ years and now I've got figure out how to get Windows to get back to DMA for my CD-RW drive...I know it's not easy....geeez!!

The WORKAROUND solution below works (after 3 reboots...thanks MicroSuck).

Just a note, but the Microsoft KB recommends UNINSTALLING the IDE/ATAPI drivers .. when in XP you can just go into the  ADDVANCED tab and change from PIO to DMA directly .. the change SHOULD persist ... I'd try that first ... It's quick and simple

On mine, anyways, the problem is precisely that XP/2K won't see DMA even if you do manually change it to "DMA if available".  You have to delete the IDE controller from hardware manager and reboot.  XP/2K will auto-reinstall the controller, then it sees DMA.

It's a bug in the OS.

I concur with Geo...that's what I've seen with Win2k for the past 3 years.

Here's a good link with info on how Windows handles DMA/PIO switching:

Changing the setting for the IDE controller from PIO to DMA solved the problem for me. I've been going nuts trying to figure out why I had jitter in my burns. Thanks for re-posting the tip.

By the way, the change stuck in W2K after a reboot. No problems.

One thing about burning data (mp3) CD's....It would be nice if MC9 would tell you what the actual capacity of what you can burn on the disc is.  For example, I have 700MB CD-R disc to burn my mp3's to--but only about 685 MB of the disc is usable for space for mp3's--if I copy over 685 MB, the disc is a coaster...Took me awhile to figure out the exact amount of data that can actually fit on the disc;  If I go to 695 MB of data to copy, it won't work  (despite it being a 700 MB disc--I suspect it's got to do with the amount of space for the lead in and lead out)--but there is no warning that I've got too much data queued up if I go up that high, despite the fact that the disc holds 700MB.

So it seems actual disc space and usable disc space (probably due to "housekeeping" functions of the "writing lead in", etc)  are two different things--it would be nice if there was a way for MC9 to take into account the space that the housekeeping functions so that we don't go over the "true" space you can burn on, 'cause once you go over this magic number, your disc is toast.....Again, if I stay around 685 MB's, I don't have any problems, but I hadn't ripped a data CD in a while, I forgot about that little quirk, and a ruined a few discs before I vaguely remembered it.

cct1,

Must be drive-specific...with my 'old' Plextor 12/10/32A burner, I get 704 MB to burn for an MP3 data CD.  I guess you have to 'learn' what your drive supports and beware...I doubt MC can just 'figure it out' for you.  The 'learning' process might be easier if you use 'test-mode' burns first to determine your burner's limits (no coasters).

MC *should* be showing the actual capacity. For example on my Plextor 24/10/40 drive, when I place a 700MB disk in the drive, the burn dialog shows about 702MB available. I tested queuing up about 701.9 MB and it burned ok.
What is MC showing for capacity on your drive/media combination? How much did you queue up for burning?

It shows the capacity of the disc correctly--700 MB--but I can't burn that much; if I do, it simply doesn't work.  Say I burn 690 MB worth of mp3's--the disc is worthless.  If I queue up to about  680 MB, no problem....

I get a message with the 690 burn to the effect  "not appended for further additions" or something to that effect, which I would expect, since it's a CD-R.  However, each time I get that message, the disc is no good.  When I drop down to 685, I get a simple  "CD burn completed" message, and all is fine...Weird, maybe it's just my drive--but it's consistent.  If I go too close to the 700 MB cutoff, no burn; I have to remember to keep it under about 680....

It looks like your drive isn't reporting the correct capacity to MC, either that or there's a bug somewhere. Do other burning programs report the correct capacity (685MB)? If you send me an email, I'll sent you a special version of the writer control with some added diagnostics to see if I can figure out what's going wrong.

- Thanks,

Ahh..That makes sense..

The thing is, these are supposedly 700 MB discs--are you saying that the discs aren't necessarily exactly 700MB--ie the manufacturere  (in this case memorex) rounded up a little bit? That would make sense...I was figuring that MC9 needed a few MB for the write in and close out or whatever it does to make it work, and these weren't being factored into true available disc space....A while back I (and another user with the identical cd drive) was having problems with ripping; this is the same drive as then.  That was the deal where the guy sent you his Yamaha drive and you guys figured it out--wonder if he's still around and if he has this problem too.

I'll try another burning program and see what it tells me about the disc capacity...

Hey, thanks for the replies--I'll check it out and get back to you.  It's not a huge deal, but it would save me a coaster or two when I forget about the "680" rule for my computer...

VIA Driver problem
Thanks to Lisa for reporting the "Via Driver" problem (IDE drives report as SCSI) and the fix in this thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=16108;start=msg113344#msg113344

Master/slave problem
Another problem, found recently by JohnT and Matt of JRiver was due to cabling and CD settings.  One drive was set to master and the other to "cable select" .  The "cable select" was apparently not working because setting the drives (with the jumpers on the drives) to master and slave worked.

Permissions problem
To burn without Administrator rights on W2K / XP, your administrator will have to open up the SCSI passthrough layer for you.  A utility to do so is here:

If it just started happening without any other changes to your system, I'd guess it's a hardware malfunction with the CD burner. It sounds like it's not accepting the speed select command from the burn software. Maybe you could try selecting a slower burn speed.

I found out that PC Booster caused my bad cd burning.  I don't know why it caused such an error, but I removed the program and now it works.  It also messed up my other burning programs.

I run Windows XP with 750 Mhz with over 500 Mb of ram.

I am a new user of Media Center. I have a 2.4 mhz with 512 meg, XP Service Pack 1. The CD Burner program gives me inaccurate advice as to storage (as if I were burning an audio cd rather than an MP3 cdrom). All my attempts to burn have failed. It seems defeat the purpose of the program if I have to go to Nero to get accurate, reliable MP3 cdroms. I love the librarian function and play function but without the burner...

Reptile - post your System info here as well.  (Help > System Info....it's automatically copied to your clipboard, then just paste it here)

I've been having trouble since i got my new PC, much similar to yours, it sounds.  Perhaps the boys can find something we have in common and offer a fix.  ;-)

Hey, folks.  Not sure this is the right thread, but I was wondering about bad CD burns: I just made four coasters and I don't know why.  These are audio type CDs on 80 minute blanks of 3 different makes, the CDs burn pretty well, but when I hit track advance on my CD player, the player tells me it's track 2, but track one is still playing.  About 1:08 in to track two (per the CD player) the real audio track two starts.  And this goes on till the end of the disk.  The last track gets cut off.

I just remembered: I installed EZCD Creator 6 basic (came with the drive, and I HAD to do some DATA stuff, don't hold it against me!).

Is there some calibration that is done for the drive?

Any hints?

You could try 9.1.  It will work with the same license you have.

Or skip to 10.0.  It's in a thread near the top of this board.  There is an upgrade charge.

I'm too scared!  I loved Media Jukebox, and now love Media Center, but the fact is that all the posts and all the builds scare me.  I come from an engineering background, where things run in realtime and work for years (without new builds every month).  I had 9.1-something installed on my laptop as a trial, and the database was sluggish.  I only have 25,000 tracks, with no lyrics or bios, maybe 50% have embedded images, but that should not impact MC...

Some of the directions that MC has taken are seemingly noble, but really dilute the power of this program (I shudder to think how much better MC10 could have been if someone didn't spend time on 3D-interactive pong).  I fear that the more time that is spent trying to add fluff and flash, the program will stumble.  I am what you would call a hard-core fan of music: I don't need all the screen savers, I prefer the DIRT display to the fancy animated stuff in the now-playing screen.  And that is what I think MC should focus on: being the best darn media player/organizer/recorder possible.  After it does all those things reliably, and without performance hits, THEN pursue some of the flashy, glitzy stuff (with options to disable, of course!).  Now, this is just MY opinion.

I may try installing the trial version on my laptop to see if MC10 is worthy.  Stability, speed, and reliability are high on my list.  Added fluff-ware make me cry.

Ok, off the soapbox...Thanks for reading.

I completely disagree with 'roognation'. There are plenty plain jane software junk to play his mp3's with.

Has 'roognation' even purchased a real copy of retail software yet! I hate it when people sit around with 'free' software....then complain too!

Go you guys! Great program and getting better.

MC 10 has been through the most extensive stability testing of any version of Media Jukebox/Center. We've really concentrated on stability/reliability/speed AND usability more than ever before. The 3D pong was just a practical joke - Matt spent about 3 hours on it total.

Now as to the CD burning problem, there were several fixes applying to the kind of problem you are experiencing, so I'd recommend you try the latest version of MC 10 to see if it fixes it. If not, please start a new thread about it.

Thanks!

I just upgraded to MC 10 (latest version) last night. I also have SP2 installed.

I attempted to burn a CD twice last night and got CDs unreadable by any player. There is stuttering or total lack of tracking.

I should add that at least twice when I was attempting to burn a cd MC simply quit with no error message whatsoever.

I am having the same problem using MC10.  When I burn a CD they play back starting in the middle of the songs.
I'm opening a separate thread titled "CD burn track boundary problem" for debugging this problem. Please post in that thread.

Thanks,

Just so you know, I searched for this thread and got no results.

Has anyone ever received the error message "illegal mode for this track" during a burn?

I ran the TEST burn prior to actual BURN without any errors.

Sounds like you're trying to burn an audio disk with video or image files included.  Try switching to a data disk.

thanks for the response.

the files are definitely all MP3

I tried it twice, the first time it wrote 5 files before erroring (after a successful TEST), the second time it went through to the 10th file before erroring (again after a successful TEST of all)

I have burned full CDs with no problem prior to this attempt

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

I may split this out as a new thread, so if you don't see it here, look on the board index.

I'd like to humbly bump this to encourage you helpers to respond to my posts above. Honestly, the new thread covering boundary issues didn't seem to answer my question.

Between the unreadable discs, the crashing and my system info, does anyone have any ideas?

On the first burn attempt I burned straight to disc. On the second one I did not. Both failed, although on the second try MC at least thought it had worked (no crash).

Thanks!

Hi - thought this might be the best place to post this problem......

i have been trying to burn about 4.4gb of MP3s to DVD. I select all th erequired tracks, MC starts writing them....appears to finish writing them (some time later) and after writing the last track says "Invalid CDb". The DVD then cannot be read by windows/explorer and the dics has clearly been written on.

Any thoughts or help woul dbe appreciated!

thanks

I thought I should point out that the disc I burned yesterday seems to be OK. The only thing I've changed, AFAIK, is disabling the ability to record in the windows xp properties of my CD-R drive.

Does this need to be sticky any more?  it seems really old.  Too many stickies now IMHO.
