Downloaded the latest version and having issues running with windows 10. Media starts runs and shuts down with in 5 seconds. I have defaulted the file types to media 21, removed Windows media player and still can not get this to stay running. I cannot keep it running to try and look at the log for issues. Anyone have some ideas to get this to work. All security and fire walls are disabled. Microsoft Groove will  play the FLAC files but it will not let you use the higher 96/192 sample rates.

Anyone have some solutions for this? Thank you

Hi Matt,

The ctrl-p bug is fixed, and the album art display/alignment glitch is fixed, thank you!

However, there is still something funny with that list style in theater view.  If there are multiple results the next level down for a line item, it should display a horizontally scrolling list of album art, but it doesn't always.

If you define your levels as Genre/Artist/Album, the top level has scrolling lists on each line, but the artist level only shows one image, even if the artist has multiple albums.

If you define your levels as Year/Genre/Artist/Album, then the top TWO levels have horizontally scrolling lists of multiple album images, but again at the artist level, it only shows one image even for an artist with a dozen albums.

It always shows only one image if the level is Artist, or Album Artist.  It shows an artist image if you have one defined, or it shows a single album cover if you don't.

This seems like the wrong behavior; it's inconsistent with the upper levels.  That list style shows album covers, and if the artist has multiple albums, it should show the list, like the higher levels do.  It should only show a single image where there is only a single object the next level down.  Don't you think?

You might want to update your OS to either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.  I read that there is some issues with Windows 7 64 bit with 4k.
I am currently running Windows 10 64 bit/Nvidia 980 ti/ LG 79" Ub9800 and I don't have any issues with JRiver, but I don't have it enabled.
I have played 4k games, and zero issues.

This is not a major issue and I believe it also occurs in release 20.    When ripping a CD to the MC music library a multi artist album will get recorded as a seperate album for each artist.    I then have to delete the individual albums and close MC.   When I restart MC and rip the album again it correctly records all artists into the single album.

Not really new, but still annoying: clicking in the program window while performing operations involving high volume disk updates result in mediacenter not responding messages, program window greyed out, status message (writing xxx of yyy) disappear. Task manager shows activity, though, and mediacenter returns after completion most of the time.

That's probably a Windows issue.

Night Mode is not working properly.

It is boosting both peaks and quiet parts, causing a dramatic increase in overall volume.

Try the nightclub scene in The Dark Knight.  With Night mode off, peaks are at -14.  With it on, they are at -4.  That's the opposite of what it should do.

I have volume leveling turned on, and the movie file is analyzed.

Night Mode is supposed to reduce the dynamics in a track, so that you can lower the overall volume and still hear quiet dialog while not being overwhelmed by explosions.
This whole process still requires you to manually reduce the volume to a comfortable level however. :)

Reducing dynamic range is what it's supposed to do, yes.  Increasing overall volume is not part of that description, yet that's what it does.

Many AV processors and receivers are equipped with Dynamic Range Compression settings to perform this exact function (when bitstreaming).  They all perform that funtion in the standard way, by reducing peaks and boosting quiets, both towards an average level.  It's great that JRiver would want to implement this functionality so that it can be available when not bitstreaming.

But Night mode currently makes everything louder.  I am not judging whether this is a bug or a design flaw, but it does not funtion in a generally expected way, nor in a way that matches its description.  It's also counter to the purposes of implementing volume levelling if you have to dramatically change the volume setting whenever your turn night mode on or off.

[...]They all perform that funtion in the standard way, by reducing peaks and boosting quiets, both towards an average level.[...]

But Night mode currently makes everything louder.

I think you misunderstand Dynamic Range Compression.  It's whole purpose is to "make everything sound louder".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression#Types

It's fairly uncommon for Compressors to reduce the peak level, but it's one of the ways.  The other way is to increase the lower level sounds, leaving the peaks the same.  This makes the *average* sound level louder.   It's the compressor's job:  Make the dynamic range smaller.  NOT make the level lower.  Make the range smaller.

Your example of a level being increased is only meaningful *if* that is the loudest sound in the entire movie.  You'd need to find the loudest part and then turn on night mode and see if the loudest part got louder.  It shouldn't if I understand how MC uses Dynamic Range Compression in Night Mode.  The peak should stay the same.  Everything else should get louder.

If you want both Dynamic Range Compression, *and* overall volume reduction, go to the Parametric Equalizer, and dial down the overall gain by a few dB.  I'm guessing 6 to 10 would suit you based on your description.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression#Types

Well, I think perhaps you do.  To quote the very first sentence of the article you just used to support your point:
Dynamic range compression (DRC) or simply compression reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by narrowing or "compressing" an audio signal's dynamic range.

The purpose is NOT to make everything sound louder.  It's about reducing the gap between peaks and valleys.  And it's indeed fairly common for compressors to both reduce peaks and boost valleys.

No offense intended, and I'm trying not to take any myself.

The approach to compression frequently taken in producing music albums to make albums louder is not the same approach taken by home audio equipment when implementing DRC or Night Mode functions that are applied to Dolby and DTS bitstreams.  JRiver, per the feature description of Night Mode, seems to be aiming for the latter and not the former.  For a better understanding of this concept, rather than Wikipedia try this material from Dolby: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/all-about-audio-metadata.pdf

But I'm not interested in further debating the definition of DRC with you.  Perhaps the developers could weigh in on whether Night Mode needs adjustment, or is working as designed.  If the latter, then I'll stop trying to use it, since the way it functions is disruptive, and consider going back to bitstreaming so my hardware processor can handle the DRC tasks, although I was looking forward to making better use of the software.  I submit for their consideration that DRC that better preserves average volume level by both cutting peaks and boosting valleys better serves the pursuit of volume leveling for videos by making it less necessary to adjust the volume when you turn night mode on or off.

Could someone at JRiver please address the question of the algorithm's design and whether boosting both peaks and valleys in the pursuit of compressing dynamic range is the correct and appropriate thing for Night Mode to be doing?  Thanks...

My AVR makes everything louder when Dynamic range compression (i.e. Dolby Volume) is enabled, and results in me turning the volume knob down to compensate. Sounds to me like jriver's DRC is doing basically the same thing, so it does like it is a bug. At most it would be an implementation method choice.

Dolby Volume is their name for a licensed implementation of a different algorithm that performs volume normalization.  It's not exactly the same thing as DRC, althoug DRC is implemented as part of Dolby Volume.

There seems to be a problem with CARNAC interpreting files that have both a disambiguation year and space in the name.

See thread here for details: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101071.0

Zoneswitch is not working correctly (when other zone is already active) over here if the files are not part of the tabs "audio" or "video". If I open a video file from windows explorer while jriver is playing music the zoneswitch fails because it does not stop my "music" zone. Like wise the same happens if I open some audio file while some video is playing on the "video" zone.
The zoneswitch only works correctly if no zone is playing at that time ( if I press stop on the active zone ) or if you start the playback from jriver tabs "audio" or "video". Anything else and the zoneswitch fails.

The problem seams only to be because the active working zone is not stopping like it should before attempting playback on another zone when file is sent/open externally to jriver.

Hope I explained correctly how to reproduce the problem.
(version 19 of jriver works correctly. It stops the active zone before starting playback on another zone)

Bug: With a video file selected, selecting tag from the edit menu causes JRiver to crash.

Having the tag window open (say after selecting tag on an audio file), and selecting the video option on the left hand side of standard view causes JRiver to crash.

Bug: With a video file selected, selecting tag from the edit menu causes JRiver to crash.

Having the tag window open (say after selecting tag on an audio file), and selecting the video option on the left hand side of standard view causes JRiver to crash.

You may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling Media Center. The crash dump file you attached is giving me some strange information. It lists the Module name as Media Center 20.exe, but the Module version is listed as 21.0.6. On top of that, the version of JRTools is 21.0.17, so it seems like something strange might have happened during the install or update.

I agree, something is wrong with his install. I was trying to analyze the crash and its just weird stuff going on.
I would strongly recommend to completely uninstall and delete the folder in Program Files in this particular case, since something seems to have gone wrong badly.

With the upgrade from MC20 to MC21 lots of people reported that file associations weren't all updated. I had that issue as well, and still occasionally when I double click on a new file type outside MC, I get MC20 start up while I am actually using MC21 Server or Client. ( It is probably about time I uninstalled MC20.  ;D )

That could be what is happening with Audionut11. JRiver says in several places that two versions of MC can be run at the same time, or the old version can be left on the PC without trouble, but actually there are some traps with doing that.

It looks like a number of people were reporting that recent builds were interacting negatively with Dirac (crashing Dirac or JRiver or both), and three of them solved their issue by disabling the ASIO input driver: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101068

Based on the info in that thread, recent changes to the ASIO driver (for Sony compatibility) may have created issues with Dirac.  I don't use Dirac so can't test, but it seems suspicious that several people all started seeing issues with recent builds and disabling the ASIO driver was the fix for several folks.

This should be fixed in an upcoming build.

Good Morning,

Possible Bug

In version 17 it is impossible to change in the DSP window the sample rate. Only the less then 44.1k and the more than 768k can be changed.

I use windows 10 and 8.1 and the french language in MC.

Regards
