Idpi and hats
« on: April 22, 2018, 06:45:52 am »

Is it possible to install 'hats' on the Idpi?  I would like to add the hifiberry digi+ pro to get high quality SPDIF via coax to my dac.
Is the Idpi case removable?

Yes and yes, but you might need a different case.

Thanks, Jim.  I just had a look closely at the case and I see how it comes apart. I'll try to adapt it, but if not then another case will do the trick.
Appreciate the speedy answer, especially at your time-zone!

I got myself a steel case for the digi+ pro from HiFiBerry.

It's a nice piece of kit that works for me. And, as they say in old school cycling circles, "steel is real".

Thanks. I have duly ordered one!

From here:

Great news that a new release is available for the Raspberry Pi. As an established user of version 22 on an IdPi with Hifiberry Digi+ Pro card, I would like to know whether you have compiled all the latest audio HAT board's driver code into the new Linux Kernel used to support the PI B+? I would like to upgrade to an Allo DigiOne S/PDIF card, which is not supported under MC 22 on IdPi. There would be no point to upgrade my current IdPi to a B+ if no new HATs are supported.

There are a number of other audio HATs and more being developed, that are not currently supported in your Kernel build. Giving users full flexibility to use any audio HAT available in the Raspberry Pi Raspian Stretch OS would be of great help.

Thanks, Duncan.

What's the scope of coverage for Pi HATs for the IdPi?
There doesn't appear to have been much obvious progress from this thread:
Is there a listing for add-on DACs that are supported on the IdPi?

Is the IdPi limited to the HiFiBerry range only?

Looks like there's a decent swag of documentation out there to assist:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/blob/master/boot/overlays/README

The Allo HATs certainly have received positive coverage / reviews out there in my reading.

Others that I'm aware of are:
http://iqaudio.co.uk/
https://www.justboom.co/

There's also this unit:
http://www.pi2design.com/502dac.html
but from what I know it will be recognised as a Hifiberry DAC+

EDIT:
Just found this self-proclaimed Definitive List of Pi HATs.

I just got an Allo DigiOne HAT, and it doesn't seem to be supported by IdPi. I'd go in and try to change the dtoverlay in the config file, but I don't know of a way to do that with the IdPi interface as it won't allow me to open terminal windows.  Config/driver info located at:

You could try directly editing the /boot/config.txt file and adding the relevant overlay spec. Refer my comment here that cross references info from @duncan4791:

Worked for my pi2design 502DAC. You'd need to research the correct command for the DigiOne and tread carefully. Either that or wait for @bob to work up some magic, such as provide a list of HAT/Shield options via IdPi Menu > 17 Custom RPi configuration (audio device, etc) or some other smart plan.

Probably should add  that at any rate..

So I just have to wait for a new version of the Id, and then do the SD card swap thing.

Anyone know if I could download the linux version of Media Center and then use registration code I got with my Id?

The Id license won't work with anything other than the Id.

Media Center 22 does not support the Allo DigiOne. If you have Media Center 24 and it still does not work then check the Boot/Overlays directory using a SDCard reader on any ordinary computer. It will list all the Allo cards that the kernel currently supports. As always the Raspian Linux will support all hats and the Linux version of Media Center.

Best Duncan.
