No, sorry.  I can't pry it out of him.  It's his baby and he wants to make it perfect.  He's talking 9.1 or so.  I'm saying "now, is now good?".

I might have to mention the P word.  I hate to do it.

I'm still trying to figure out why Jim's so excited about the addition of a new "add to playing now" mode.  I mean, there are already like 20 of them there...

It's not easy being green.

I'll have to pay for this tomorrow, but I think the wine is fine.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/vis_3D.mjp

It's an mjp package install like the other plug-ins.

(our ftp server is slow tonight because of CNET -- it could take 60 seconds to start)

Install.

Play music.

Go to playing now.

Fiddle with arrows for Visualization, Image, None, etc. until you reach 3d.

Fiddle with the other arrows to see the other pre-sets.

It may not work on all video cards.

WARNING-- Children, do not try this at home.

Matt wrote it.  It's a 3d visualization plug-in.

Winamp does a couple.  WMP does, too.  I think they may have some catch-up to do now.

It makes a lot of interesting things possible.  Please tell us what you can imagine.

As his Highness says, it requires a video card with character and strength.

At this time, it might break on a lot of cards, but I suppose we'll hear about it.

OK, now I am psyched about MC visualizations. I'm sure that I can find it within myself to make some system-crippling 3D scenes  ;)  This is dependent upon the ease of implementation, of course...

Well It Works Good On My ATI 9700 Pro

There is a few times it will slow down to 4+ frams a second. I guess that maybe a bug but it did not crash.

Hmm. Tried pounding it with Slayer, Pixies, and Ministry. Best I could do was to get it down to 24fps with Paganini. Radeon 9500 Pro.

Weird--I have an "old" Nvidia GeForce3 (using 41.09 drivers), and your card crushes mine like a grape.  I ran the vis with Fraps [http://www.fraps.com/], and while cycling through all the presets, never saw anything below 20 fps (and that was on Preset 0, which was definitely the slowest of them all).  The other presets kept me pegged squarely at ~32-33 fps.  Something funky is going on, because your card is faster than mine.

BTW, Fraps is a nice utility to use for anyone keen on developing their own presets.

Great work guys.  These visualisations are great and working fine on my NVidia 4400Ti

The only problem I think I've found is that Preset 4 doesn't update the image it is playing.  I.E. If I change music all of the other Presets show the new CD Image, whereas, Present 4 continues to show the previous one (I've replicated this on two PC's now).

It's great that you are working on the visualisations part of MC - as I do think this is one area that really needed updating when compared to some other music software.

MC is awesome !!  and you guys deserve all the credit you get !!!

Nice. Very nice. Thnx for the sneak preview. Getting a steady 35 fps on my geforce3 Ti 200. No crashes so far. Gamma setting seems a tad high, a bit like looking through mist at times, cycle presets a possibility?
I even forgot about my buffer overflow problem for a while there, piped the sound through the hifi, the visuals to the TV and felt pleased with myself for choosing MC over all those others I trialled.
Keep up the great work. 8)

I think it's funny to see how enthusiastic a 3D visualization plug-in makes people.  I agree it looks nice and all, but I personally put an extremely low importance on visualizations.  I usually have better things to devote CPU time to.

I agree.  Visualizations are very interesting...I loaded it and watched and thought....that's kindda cool.  But I haven't been using visualizations at all.  I like to look at the info on the track I'm playing if anything.  But most of the time I put music on in the background and I'm doing something else...either on the computer or around the house.  Who sits at the computer and fancinates at the screen??  You guys have way too much time to waste!  Come on over and do some filing! :-*

It's not about sitting at the computer and just staring at the vis.

You turn on the music, you pop on the vis, set it to full screen, and then you go spend some "quality time" with the girlfriend. ;)

An altered state of mind helps, too.

I really like those new 3D viz.

You do not have to stare at them when working on your pc,  but they can turn a black TV screen into something more enjoyable.

w00t ?

Where did that come from and what does it mean?
Is it an acrynonym?
Or something like LOL and ROFLMAO ?

. . . . . if it is a 'guy thing', then just nevermind

Thanks for asking Lisa, I was also wondering.

I thought It was something I could not catch since english's not my mummy's tongue !

If it's a guy thing then I don't know about it

Is WOOT the same as w00t ?

wOOt can it be ?

found this definition on the net :
Woot
A young boy from the far corner of the Gillikin Country of Oz. Everything at his home is so quiet, happy, and comfortable he does not find life very interesting; so he sets out to see new sights and strange people. Woot is instrumental in convincing the Tin Woodman he should seek out and marry his former sweetheart, Nimmie Amee. This sets in motion a new adventure in the Land of Oz. aka Woot the Wanderer.

So it looks like a guy thing

Dunno abou the actual etymology of 'w00t' but it's been part of net lingo for years. Just a substitute for 'woohoo' or 'yeeha' AFAIK. It's an example of the so-called hacker argot in which numbers or symbols replace letters and/or words are deliberately mis-spelled. Good in small doses, but will tag someone as a 1053r if they use it too often  ;)

I came in out of curiosity and saw the 3D visualizations. DL'd and wow...cool. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'll bet display performance would increase if OpenGL was used instead of DirectX. Case in point...the 3D screensavers are GL based, and seem to have more going on than MC's 3D viz's. But then again, I've always cheerleaded for OpenGL (so maybe I'm biased). Can (or will) JR support it? I've got some cool ideas for some viz's.

10-27

edit: plus it would fit in nice with Linux based MC

My 2 cents on the vis thing:

If you're just sitting and doing work at your PC then visualizations are more likely a distraction than something to get really excited about.

But if you're using MJ/MC via a HTPC and you're just hanging out reading or perhaps having some friends over then having the vis on the TV makes for great "background entertainment".

Just put an updated version up. (8:05 PM CST)

http://ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/vis_3D.mjp

We're still hammering out the internals to allow for future coolness, so don't expect much new eye candy for a bit.

And brainstorm ideas with us.  I'll get us started:

Musical Note Starfield
Museum Art Gallery (using your own pictures)
Go-Go Dancers
Late To Work In 3D (waiting for Jim to take some vacation)

Thanks everyone.
