Installing MC25
« on: March 20, 2019, 10:55:21 am »

JRiver Media Center 25.0 is now available.

It's on the Download Page in a thread near the top called "JRiver Media Center 25.0 -- Available Here".

Mac builds are on the MC25 for Mac board.

You will need to:
1.  Download MC25
2.  Install it
3.  Restore your MC25 license if necessary

Problems
Is your license not accepted?
Make sure you're on the right upgrade page.  A Mac License can't be used to purchase a Windows upgrade, for example.  A Master License can only be upgraded to a Master License, not to a Mac or Windows license.
Use copy and paste.  0 (zero) and O (letter) look alike.  So do 1 (number one) and l or I (letters).

Can't find MC25?   MC25 is on the MC25 board.  Please follow the instructions in this topic to install.

More
Restore your license

Restoring a backup of your library.  MC makes them automatically.  You can use your OS to search for zip files to find them.  MC25 can restore a backup from MC20, MC21, MC22, MC23, MC24, or MC25.

You can use translate.google.com to translate this page.  For example:  En Francais

It was a joy to install MC25 on my PC. Install, Copy license key and add Access Key for Library Server and it run's  :) :) :)

I really like the lyrics lookup  8)

I have not installed it on my server. Two questions:

1.) How do I migrate my cover art folder (I added some cover art to it)?
2.) The exclusions in MS antivirus must be added manually again for MC25?

Antivirus settings will be different.  Yes.

You could copy your cover art folder manually to a new location, then tell MC where it is (File Locations in Options).

Thanks Jim!

But MC was more intelligent  :): Today I installed MC25 on my server and MC25 copied automatically all the Cover Art Folder to

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 25\Cover Art

Brilliant!

I just successfully installed MC 25 on my Mac. Then I wanted to export the library from version 24 and to import it into 25 but there is no chance to open MC 24 anymore.
Any idea?

Backup and restore?

The backups are .zip files.  Try searching in Finder.

Win10 64bit

MC25 installed okay and seems to be running but it started with a new, empty Main Library and is not showing my existing MC24 libraries. If I try to Add Library and point to my library folder it errors saying I can't create a new library at the specified location. The directory must be empty.

I used to be able to add existing Libraries that way. What am I missing here?

thanks,   -phil

You can restore from a backup.  MC makes them automatically.  Search for *.zip files in Explorer.

The MC backups were at:
C:\Users\....\Documents\JRiver\Media Center 24\Library Backups

So far that seems to have worked. Troubleshooting playback now. It's not playing thru my USB optical output. Probably a PC issue.

Why isn't the Add Library working as it should?

No, it's my existing library full of songs.
So the process used to be, and it's still labeled this way:

Select Add Library and for the local path you "Enter a path to an existing library or enter a path with no files in it to create a new library."

I'm not creating a new library just pointing MC to an existing library directory.

MAC OS 14.4 - MC 25

I'm still fairly new to Media Center, but have become a big fan right after purchasing and configuring MC 24 late last year.

Not sure what I did wrong, but I downloaded the new MC 25 installer and installed/registered it.

When opening MC 25, I expected it to see my MC 24 library and settings, but it came up empty.

When I open up MC 24, it's all there, still.

How do I migrate MC 24 to 25 in its entirety, settings and all?

Find a MC24 Library Backup. Restore it to MC25, with settings.

I edited out your registration code and you shouldn't ever post that publicly because it could cause your license to get deactivated.

I do have 24 and 25 running in parallel right now, so I guess I'll be fine with backing up the library from 24 (with settings), and restoring to 25, but isn't there a method by which I can just update 24 to 25, with everything intact, like most other software does?

Maybe I'm just being thick, but I faintly remember there being an "upgrade" function within 24, somewhere...maybe I made a mistake by downloading and sintalling the 25 version as if it was a first-time install.

If MC24 is installed and has a library, then when you install MC25, it should find and use the MC24 (or earlier) library and (optionally) its settings.

In my experience the backup and restore method to upgrade major versions is by far the most reliable. You should run a backup before upgrading anyway so only the restore bit is extra and it only takes seconds.

The in-place upgrade is not as reliable and certainly has had problems when MC runs as a non admin user. Here the UAC'd upgrade process runs in a different 'admin' context and I found it failed import the previous MC version settings properly/completely so I now avoid it completely and just do a restore. Maybe things are better in 25 but I've not noticed it mentioned in any release notes.

I'm trying to install MC25 with windows 7-64  and it is not installing. The file extraction seems to work OK and the files are extracted to my user temp folder (7zSCE09.tmp) but once completed they are automatically deleted when "i allow the program to make changes to my computer" and the installation does not proceed. Any help or advice you could offer would be great.

That kind of problem is almost always caused by antivirus software.

I have been trying to install MC25 on Window 7Pro 64Bit without success. The program will extract but before the installation begins the extracted files are deleted. I have removed/uninstalled McAfee completely and the problem persists. I have had MC19,20,21,22,23 and 24 all installed on the same machine without any issues in the past. I hope someone can be of help to resolve this problem.

Thanks,
Tim

The issue was with 7-Zip extractor and something on my PC, which would extract the files but for some reason delete them before the Installation could commence. So I downloaded 7-zip and did a manual extraction of the files and then manually installed the program. MC25 is now running on my PC. Thanks for everyone's help.

Wait, why is 7-Zip opening .exe files? It shouldn't be unless 7-Zip has the .exe file association somewhere and even then it shouldn't because .exe files are application/executable files on Windows, and not archive files that 7-Zip would typically be opening.

I'd look into that if I were you and try to find out why 7-Zip is opening .exe files and reset the file association if 7-Zip is the default app to open .exe files, otherwise you'll have nothing but issues when trying to install other applications and not just MC.

7-Zip is probably the embedded zip file extractor that JRiver use to extract files from the MC update executables, at a guess. Normally that would be visible to a user, but it could be if there was an issue that interrupted the installation process.

I would lay good odds that some anti-virus or other security software was scanning the extracted files, deciding they were not safe, and deleting them before the installation process could install MC.

I tend to agree with you. I did however uninstall and remove McAfee, rebooted and the problem persisted. Most likely not a 100% clean removal. 7-Zip is the file extractor for MC25 and can be found under file properties/details.

All is working good now. Thanks to all for your help.

I am having issues with the MC25 install.  It hangs at "Upgrading from previous version."

Thanks for any help!

I'm having this same issue on one PC - Win 10,  On my main machine I was having the same issue so I uninstalled 24 and 25 installed OK.  On my second PC I've tried to delete all traces of 24 (searched file explorer for JRiver and deleted everything found).  Still hangs and fails @  "Upgrading from previous version."  I've tried downloading 25 again to that machine directly - same issue.

Thanks in advance

spent more time in RegEdit and found artifacts from back to 21.

Deleted and all is good. 25 installed.

What is odd is that on another machine with 24 installed 25 went right over it, as easy as can be.
