Installing MC25
« on: March 21, 2019, 09:08:09 am »

JRiver Media Center 25 is on the Download Page.  You may find a newer build in a thread near the top of the MC 25 board.  The thread is called "JRiver Media Center 25.0 -- Available Here".

You will need to:
1.  Download
2.  Install
3.  Restore your MC25 license if necessary

Data from MC24 will be found and transferred to MC25.  You can also restore a backup from MC24 in MC25 (File > Library > Restore).

When you're happy with MC25, you can uninstall MC24.

If you have problems, please read the instructions here:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,119901.0.html

Thanks again for your support.

Regards,

JRiver

I just went to the MC24 directory and ran the uninstall program from there. It uninstalled with no problem.

It would seem that you can only backup if you are using a local library and not one shared from Media Server. Is this correct? How can I back up my views and settings on my client machine?

Hi Jim,
I just installed MC25 and now all files get this error message: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dom3c0xt73tgl36/Screenshot%202019-03-31%2022.54.40.png?dl=0 . It cannot find any file in my music collection. I did select all the correct types of files in my library. The library shows up in Audio, but nothing will play. Do I have to clear the library and import all over again? This is not a good result of installing a new version.

Right click on a file and do Locate > External.  Is the file there?  Is M: there?

It gives the name of the file, including M, but says the file doesn't exist. See https://www.dropbox.com/s/3p9t19c9pqfhvdc/Screenshot%202019-04-01%2009.11.47.png?dl=0 .  I just looked at Configure Auto-import and found that the installation of MC25 stripped away most of the NAS address. All that is left is M:\. So I opened MC24 and find that it has been stripped away there also. I looked in Explorer and find that my mapped drive to the NAS has disappeared. I recreated the drive, which appears as "music(\\192.168.7.200)(M:)", but when I browse to it in Configure Auto-import, it gets reduced to M:\. But now it will play all my files.

I will call Synology because this mapped drive was created in their Synology Assistant software and shouldn't have disappeared. I may also have to call Microsoft. The reason I created the mapped drive was because MS Explorer stopped showing the NAS as a computer so I couldn't look inside it at the music library and manipulate files and folders there. This is important because I find that some files, especially downloads as opposed to CD rips, will wind up in the wrong folder and this prevents MC from sorting them properly.

You should be able to use the Map command to map the drive to M:

I used the Map Drive command in Synology Assistant. I assume that's the one you mean because I don't see a Map command in MC 25. I just don't want to have to do it over and over again, so it would be nice to figure out why it disappeared

Thanks for the rapid response Jim.

The Map command is part of Windows.  Try a Google search for how to use it.

I may also have to call Microsoft. The reason I created the mapped drive was because MS Explorer stopped showing the NAS as a computer...

Here is the fix, as long as Synology supports SMBv2 or above. You may need to update the Synology firmware, or change settings, in addition to fixing Windows. https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114852.msg794146.html#msg794146

BTW, Auto Import showing just M:\ is correct, as the mapping you have done says M:\ = "\\192.168.7.200\Music", which is a Share you have defined on the Synology. Before Microsoft removed SMBv1 support you could have just pointed MC to "\\192.168.7.200\Music", but after SMBv1 support was removed you needed the extra step of a Mapped Drive.

I don't know why your drive mapping would have disappeared though. Maybe because the PC firewall hadn't yet allowed MC25 through it, or some other change on your network.

MC doesn't do anything to change mapping.  Could be a Windows thing.

Umm, yeah. I didn't say it did. I suggested that the PC Firewall may not have allowed MC25 through, or some other network change. Like file sharing got turned off for some reason, or a network connection that should be marked as Private was changed to Public, and so on.

But definitely not caused by MC25, or the upgrade process. Much, much more likely a Windows Update, some of which have changed or broken network configuration for me.

Had MC24, installed MC25 without uninstalling MC24. It kept all my settings, but in my file browser, the folder option "Play in Media Center" did so MC24, not MC25. So I uninstalled 25 and then 24 (checked "remove registry entries" but unchecked delete library). Re-installed MC25, and all my settings and toolbars are gone (library remains). The folder option for "Play in Media Center" is also not even there any more. Enabled "shell integration" and still that folder option is not there. This is obviously not a good upgrade experience.

I can re-do my settings but how can I get that folder option back? Tried re-installing numerous times and re-enabling the "shell integration" option, to no avail.

Edit: got the folder option back.

Restore an MC24 Library Backup into MC25, with settings. MC will restart to implement the settings.
Turn off Shell integration in MC25.
Restart MC25.
Turn on Shell integration.
Shut down MC25.
Reboot PC.

That should get your settings and toolbars back, and the shell integration working properly with MC25. You may still have file association issues, which you will have to fix in Windows.

No matter what I try, no way to install MC25.
Unfortunately, by mistake, I've uninstalled MC24 AND MC23 using Revo Pro.
Disabled BitDefender, did exclusions to Windows Defender.
OS is Windows 10.

I've been using MC since always and it never happened.

Any other suggestion besides formatting my Dell XPS8920, Brazilian Portuguese?

Tks

As you can see from the attached image, my install of MC25 is showing as taking up 535mb of disk space. That's almost as much as the space taken by Microsoft Office. I've got about 5gb of music on this laptop so can't see that being a factor but would be interested in your take. MC25.0.24 64 bit.

I upgraded to MC25. (Did not uninstall MC 24 residing within Program Files (x86))
Downloaded MediaCenter250031-x64.exe and installed it.
It installed itself within the Program Files folder rather than within Program Files (x86).

Is it because I did not uninstall MC24?  ?
Would appreciate your views.

Many thanks

64bit programs are installed in the program files folder, 32 bit programs are the ones placed in the program files (x86) folder. You have installed a 64 bit version of MC25, having had a 32 bit version of MC 24 previously installed.

I had MC 23, very happy, purchased the upgrade in May and since then have not been able to install it either of my 2 W10 computers that had previous MC23 installs.
On one of them I did a complete uninstall and the behavior did not change.
It extracts the files, asks if I allow Win to make changes, I hit yes and it quits right there.
I did manage to install successfully in a W10 VM under VirtualBox even with Defender installed and no exclusions.
I have tried disabling Defender, adding exclusion for the executable, no luck.
I read the article on 'taming Defender' but could not add more of the Media Center 25 exclusions because the files/folders are not there. I did manually create a Media Center 25 empty folder and added it to the exclusions
I also ran MSCONFIG and started a clean boot w/ all services and startup programs disabled. No luck.
I have also tried installing as Admin, thinking about a possible permissions issue although the user I usually use has admin privileges. In this case it did not extract the files.
The amount of time spent on this is insane but would still appreciate some thoughts.

subibro,
Check to see if you have another "security" program running.  Anything else special about your install of Windows?

Download the latest to try.  Antivirus programs often block one build and not another.

We've seen a small number of similar problems.  People were able to run the exe and unzip the files manually, then install.

"Check to see if you have another "security" program running.  Anything else special about your install of Windows?"
nothing suspicious
no other security program running

"Download the latest to try.  Antivirus programs often block one build and not another."
disabled anti-virus in Windows Defender, updated exclusions with the new download exe. No luck.
Same behavior: extracts and then when it comes times to install, poooff, closes.

"We've seen a small number of similar problems.  People were able to run the exe and unzip the files manually, then install."
I can surely give it a try. How do I go about runninc exe and unzipping the files manually? And then, how do I install it?

I'd use something like 7-Zip to open the installer and extract the contents into another folder.

Thx. 7-zip did extract it.
My question is, does it have to be extracted in a particular folder for things to works well and avoid folder compatibility issues?
I would like to keep it standard, to avoid future issues.
Looks like it will work now.

Just extract it into any folder, because once you have MC25 installed you can delete the folder as you probably won't need it again (but if you do, re-downloading the installer and using 7-Zip to extract it is pretty easy and straightforward).

I installed MC25 in Aug. I am running Windows 10 64-Bit system and while I was exploring I saw that it says "Media Center 25.0.104 (32-Bit)".
So I'm wondering if I downloaded the wrong version of JR MC and if so can I install  the right version ?

Both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions will run on a 64 bit system.  You can just install the other one if you wish.

That is becoming a more common issue and resolution lately. There must be some common configuration of Windows that causes the issue. Probably Defender still working in the background.

I wonder if it's something related to 32 bit vs 64 bit.

That is becoming a more common issue and resolution lately. There must be some common configuration of Windows that causes the issue. Probably Defender still working in the background.

Interesting... I'll run some tests later.

I can't get the installer to work. I'm running Windows 10, 64 bit.

I downloaded MediaCenter250108-x64.exe and tried to install it. It gets to the Copying Files phase of the install and immediately gives me an error that "Install Wizard could not copy necessary files to the destination folder. Please ensure that the file 'C:\Program Files\J River Media Center 25\JRTools.dll is not in use."

I get the same result whether I double click the .exe or if I right-click and Run as Administrator.

I tried extracting the self-extracting file into a directory, and running the Install.exe file directly. I get the same error quoted above whether I double-click the file, or right-click and Run as Administrator.

The target directory mentioned in the error message is empty, the Installer apparently hasn't copied anything to it.

@mesnenor
Make sure you shut down the previous version, including Media Server. Wait a bit for all MC processes to close, or check them in Task Manager. Then reboot the PC (as long as MC doesn't start with Windows) and try the installation again.

The installation needs a clean close of the existing version. JRTools.dll in use would imply it wasn't. Or if you installed while MC was running, the installation was having trouble closing all MC components. Could be a permissions thing.

I just rebooted and tried again. The Installer was the very first thing I started after logging in. Same result. I don't know of any reason any part of MC would launch when Windows does.

How can I identify MC-related services or components in Task Manager? Is there a naming convention?

"Options > Startup > Windows Startup' defines what, if anything, is started with Windows.

The JRiver Media Center App and Processes are named beginning with "Media Center".

Of course, that may not be the issue. Many problems with JRTools.dll are caused by Antivirus software. Windows 10 runs Windows Defender if you have nothing else. Make sure it allows the installation. Disabling it during the installation might be easiest, or search the forum for the "Taming Windows Defender" thread.

I'll try disabling Windows Defender later in today. My PC also has a McAfee security suite installed.

I moved into this PC back in June (was previously on Win 7 Pro) and didn't have any problems installing MC 24, although MC 24 does sometimes simply stop running for no apparent reason - which is one of my reasons for wanting to upgrade.

Try uninstalling McAfee.  Turning off antivirus often isn't enough.
