Media Center 9 and Logitech Elite Duo Keyboard
« on: April 05, 2003, 08:43:30 am »

I have just put together a new system and have upgraded to Windows XP and a wireless keyboard
(Logitech Elite Duo).

The Logitech iTouch software that comes with the keyboard does not recognize JRiver Media Center (or Media Jukebox 8.x) as a media player. This results in Media Center not coming up when you press the Media key on the keyboard which then does not allow volume control, next track, start, pause keys etc. to work.

Is there someway I can add Media Center to the Logitech player.ini file so that it will work with the Elite Duo keyboard ?

I have searched and found information on how to do this for Media Jukebox but not for Media Center.

It works fine for all the other media players (Winamp, MusicMatch, Media Player 9 etc).

Thanks !

>> wireless keyboard
not sure i would want one or a wireless mouse.

I would think there would be a delay when using them, and if you played some games (mostly) it would kill you when Playing UT2003 or Quake III

Post the relavent section of player.ini (or the whole thing if not too large).
We may be able to get you up and running.

I'd also be keen to find out if it's possible, as I use a Logitech keyboard too. Here's my players.ini file :-

I guess the comment at the top gives some clues as to what the fields mean.

This website gives some info on how to get it working with another application :-

Thought it might be worth mentioning.

I didn't change the player.ini (cordless keyboard and mouse).

In my case the following worked:

Run "regedit" and change the following key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logitech\iTouch\CurrentVersion]
"MediaPlayer"="C:\Program Files\Media Center\Media Jukebox.exe"

(If you don't find it, try searching (Ctrl+F) for "Logitech")

Thanks for that.  :)

Do you find, though, that the player takes ages to respond after you hit one of the multimedia keys (Play, Stop, etc.) on the keyboard?

Presumably adding the registry entry just specifies the default player that it uses if you, for example, hit the Play button when none of the other players are running.

I guess that if I can find out the 'wndClass' and/or 'wndCaption' used by MC then I can have a further play around with adding a section to players.ini

Thanks again,
Jim

Found in an earlyer thread the following:

Quote
The wireless keyboard and mouse worked well, too.  It took a little time but most of the media keys on the keyboard (volume, play, stop, next track, last track, etc.) work now.  I had to add a line to a file called players.ini in the logitech directory.  Thanks, Gatobrit, for reporting it in your earlier thread.  Here's the line again:

MediaJukebox=cmd,media jukebox.exe,MJFrame,MEDIA JUKEBOX,xxx,32778,32779,32780,32781,32782,0,1,Media Jukebox

By the way: Absolute no delay with reaction time.

Hope this helps.

I take it it takes batteries for the Keyboard and Wireless Mouse.

do you know how long they will last?

Mouse:
At home I need a load every 3 months.
At work I have an optical mouse, have to realod it once a month.

The keyboards are a little bit better, 3-4 monts.

There is a new Logitech duo out now with an optical mouse and a docking station.

Btw: I use recharchable batteries ;).

I have a couple wireless keyboards and mice.  The keyboards last longer (4-5 months?).  The mice run down in a couple of months under normal use.  Logitech makes a rechargable mouse that has a little station you stand it in for the night.  I do that every two or three weeks and it works great.

I really like them.  The only drawback is that the mice are a little heavy.

There is just one negative point for me.

If I throw them out of my window, I have to go down to get them back.

Both Logitech iTouch keyboards & mice are RF (Radio Frequency) & not the clumsy IR (Infer Red) that some wireless keyboards use.

I tried various IR keyboards & all were a big disappointment.  You had to have the keyboard pointing directly at the IR receiver at all times.  All the IR receivers I tried were large clumsy things that had to be under (or in front of) the monitor or it would not work.  Also the range was very limited... around 5 - 6 foot.  If anything obstructed the IR path to the receiver it would not work. Also the acceptance angle of the IR signal path was very narrow... much narrower then a normal TV IR remote.  This made using the keyboard very unreliable as the slightest change in angle between the keyboard & IR receiver would cause dropouts of data.  What a mess!  Whoever thought of using IR for a keyboard wireless interface should be whipped with a hundred lashes!!

I almost gave up on wireless until I tried a Logitech.  WOW... what a difference... works anywhere's, around corners, through walls, up to 30 foot away.

Keystrokes are instantaneous (just as fast as a wired keyboard) plus I can put it in my lap, carry it to the couch (great for Hairstyle on the TV), or simply pick it up & move it out of the way when I need a clean desktop for other things.

As far as the mouse being a little heavy... no problem.  I use the Logitech TrackMan Marble (a BIG red ball that you use your right thumb on).  Being a ball, the mouse itself never moves... just the ball moves.  This is the most natural feeling mouse I have ever used. It has very precise control.  Everyone who uses my computer comments on how smooth the moue is.

This is my second TrackMan Marble (the first was a wired model).

I simply will never return to a wired keyboard or mouse again.  The connivance is not seen until you actually use them for awhile.

I have the original Duracell batteries still in the keyboard after almost 3 years of continuous daily use... this baby just won't give up!

I highly recommend the Logitech line of wireless keyboards & mice.

so the advantage with cables is you can pull them back up thru the window and you would not need to walk down stairs?

maybe if they had a http://www.bungcord.com it may help

My registry looks like this...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logitech\iTouch\CurrentVersion]
"MediaPlayer"="C:\Program Files\Media Center\Media Jukebox.exe"  /AudioCD "%L"]

Anyone know what the /AudioCD "%L"] on the end does?

Is it needed?

One thought on rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are great for high drain devices like electronic flash units.

They are NOT recommended on very low energy drain devices like clocks & keyboards.

The reason is that rechargeable batteries loose about 30% of their charge each month even if they are not in use.  As a result, if you put a rechargeable battery in a clock, it would stop after only a few months as the battery dies; whereas using an alkaline battery in a clock will last for several years.

That is the reason my original Duracell batteries are still going in my keyboard after almost three years of continuous daily use.

Adding the following to my players.ini seems to work a treat  ;D :-

Code: [Select]
MediaCenter=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center

You have to restart itouch.exe and MC for it to work the first time though.

I've also added the registry change mentioned above and now it starts MC when I hit the Play button, too.  (I have an 'Internet Navigator SE' keyboard).

The delay has also gone now. I guess itouch tries to identify running players by the wndClass entry in players.ini.

I'm using itouch v215 on XP Home, BTW.

Jim Legg;

Where did you find the...

"MediaCenter=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center" at?

Both the one above & the one below worked for me.  Except the one below caused MC to go from minimized to maximized when I paused or stopped playback.  The one above does not do that so it seems to work better..

"MediaJukebox=cmd,media jukebox.exe,MJFrame,MEDIA JUKEBOX,xxx,32778,32779,32780,32781,32782,0,1,Media Jukebox"

Hi,

Jim Leg & Doc Lotus

I have tried the player.ini changes as well as the earlier registry change but none of them have worked for me. I am running Windows XP Pro, what OS are you guys running ?

The keyboard media button brings up the iTouch Media Center menu with the following players listed:

1) Windows Media Player
2) Quicktime 6.1c
3) Real Player Plus 6.0
4) Media Player 9.0

update/correction: The media keys will work fine if I start JRiver Media Center first

Thanks !

Urlybird;

Am also running XP Pro but my Logitech keyboard is an old one (one of the first models), a "Cordless iTouch Keyboard". It does not have a Media key.  When I press the Play / Pause key it will load MC9.

Yeh... I've been having some problems in this area too.

If I load MC9 from the media keys on the Logitech then try to maximize MC, it will crash.

If I first have MC running, then use the Logitech media keys it will be ok.

Also, sometimes after using the Logitech media keys for a while they will simply stop working.

I think that JRiver needs to do some research into the Logitech with MC / MJ & post all the correct settings, whatever they are, as nothing posted in all the forums so far have been totally realiable for me.

"MediaCenter=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center"

Could it be having trouble with the space between Media and Jukebox?

If you look in the players.ini, none of the exe's have a filename with a space in it. May be worth checking into.

As a test you could copy Media Jukebox.exe to MediaJukebox.exe, change the players.ini to suit, then test the keyboard hotkey (with MC NOT running).

I'll vouch that the following does make a Logitech Cordless keyboard work with Media Center under XP:

1) Add the following line to C:\Program Files\Logitech\iTouch\players.ini
Code: [Select]

MediaCenter=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center

2) Save the following as mc_keyboard.reg, modify the paths as necessary, and double-click on it to import it into the registry.
Code: [Select]

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Jukebox.exe]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\Media Jukebox.exe"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\"

3) Use task manager to kill iTouch.exe
4) Start the iTouch Configuration program to restart iTouch.exe (just close it when it opens)
5) Press the Media Key and select JRiver Media Core 9.0.  This should open Media Center if everything worked.
6) The Play/Pause, Next, Previous, and Stop keys should now work.  Play will also start Media Center if it's not already running.

I am in now way trying to take credit for any of this, just thought I'd share what worked for me...

Cool!  :D

The reg file was the final piece of the puzzle for me - now MC is available as a proper 'Media' menu item. Excellent, thanks everyone  ;D

this may work on other systems like Windows 98, Windows ME etc.... (note only the first line is changed)

;========== Everything Below ==========
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Jukebox.exe]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\Media Jukebox.exe"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\"

KingSparta;

I've been wondering about that one too.

I have noticed the statement...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\mplayer2.exe]
@="\"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe\""
"Path"="\"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\""

Question is... Do I replace it with...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Jukebox.exe]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\Media Jukebox.exe"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\"

Or should I simply add the new Media Center line (second one above) in addition to the Media Player line?

No clue

Just adding a note about putting in "REGEDIT4" as the first line for win98 and WinMe users if needed.

DocLotus,

You're trying to add the following new entries into the Registry, not replace anything.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Jukebox.exe]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\Media Jukebox.exe"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Media Center\\"

All this registry stuff does is tell Windows where to find the file if somebody, say iTouch, tries to open "Media Jukebox.exe" without specifying the path.  So as an added benefit, you can now open the Start->Run dialog and simply type "Media Jukebox.exe" (with quotes) to start MC... ;)

It would be great if the JRiver guys would add this registry entry (or a MediaCenter.exe one once they update the name of the executable) during installation.  Hint, Hint.  ;D

Just for the record, I use the Logitech wireless keyboard + optical mouse duo.  Under Win XP Pro.

My battery strategy is to use ordinary dry cells in the keyboard (they last almost forever) and rechargables in the mouse, which never seems to shut down - and hence eats batteries about every two weeks.  Seems like the right trade-off between respective capital and operating costs.

The audio controls on the keyboard work beautifully with MC, with no change to any .ini's or anything else.  I much prefer it to using the MC GUI  controls for these functions.

Hope you can all reach the same state.

Are those double back slashes ( \\ ) intentional or a typo? Someone will have problems if they cut/copy & paste the string.

The double '\'s are required if you save the text into a .reg file and import the keys that way.  If you're just going to use Regedit and add the keys by hand, you only need single '\'s.

Good evening from Munich

This thread was very helpful with my Logitech iTouch. MediaCenter is working now fine with my Keyboard.
But there ist just one Thing - perhaps I missed it - the Keys don?t work if MC9 is minimized to tray-icon.

Is there a solution?
I love this software... even my girlfriend does  ;)

bye
