« on: February 14, 2003, 12:21:39 pm »

Media Center 9.0.113 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90113.exe

Changes

1. Fixed: Volume control did not work on Win9x / ME systems.
2. Fixed: Download Manager was not working correctly with Emusic.
3. Fixed: Paste link did not work in Download Manager.
4. Fixed: Debug messages are now gone from Windows Media Encoder.
5. Fixed: Windows Media encoder would not install on systems without latest version of Visual Studio .NET
6. Fixed: Skinned scrollbars didn't use the system setting for mouse wheel scrolling.
7. Fixed: Hitting "Next" or "Previous" while MC was paused would cause unexpected results.
8. Fixed: New mp3 encoding plug-in should work with Media Center (use "Help->Check for Updates" to update)
9. Changed: CD Labeler now uses JRImage.dll for image management -- creates a smaller program and better performance.

Hi Matt,

I was very excited when I see that you have fixed the volume control.  However, my machine is running Windows XP PRO, and also suffer from the same problem.  The volume bar cannot be scrolled in MC in my system.  I can only adjust the volume control from other applications.

I have 2 sound cards, Creative Extigy and Terratec Aureon 7.1.  But are having the same problem.

I can only mute the volume in MC, but I can't slide the volume bar.

Please help fix this as it is very inconvenient for us.

Hi !

When I'm trying to open then streaming file: http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/MPL/2710.mpl -
I got an error: "Windows Media Player can't find the file..."
When I'm opening the same file in Windows Media Player it works perfect !

It seems to be a problem with asf/asx-fíles ??

Try a reboot, but you may have two different problems.  The failure to reach Interact could be an Internet or firewall or proxy problem.  Please start a new thread if it continues.  It works fine from here.

It works for me, using 9.0.113.  I have WMP 9.0 installed.  If you don't, could you try that and then start a new thread if it doesn't work?  We've made changes on the WM components today.

Still not working.  The same problems that I reported on the last build related to extracting internal artwork for the front cover and the cd label persist.

OUCH!  What happened to Ctrl+U?!? (.113) While it had the dubious name "Toggle" for changing between 3 states, it DID let me quickly go from one view to another. Which can be very important if you're looking at pix from Victoria's Secret for Valentine's Day, right? Right.

I found the List Style button... but no Hotkeys show up in the menu or Tooltip.

Uh... a Hotkey is a "must have" for an image program, I think.

Doh!  Volume slider doesn't work for me either in this build.  Last build was fine, but this'n is broken.

Edit:  Weird.  It's working now?  I can't say why, but it is.

Volume control works fine for me now too.

Files played singly still have the last several seconds clipped, but play fine as part of a playlist.

Still, when burning a compilation disc, the differing artists and albums are all listed as "various."
Please someone, if you have them listed as they should be, would you verify that so I'll know there is a solution, and that perhaps it's something I'm failing to do.

Volume slider is BACK!!! It actually works on my Stereo-Link but not the Extigy. Maybe a configuration problem. I'll keep working on it.
Still can't convert files. That may be the same problem so I'll keep working on that, too.
Soon, I'll have to regroup and start over. i.e. dismantling the Command Center and rewiring. I'm starting to get lost. While I'm at it, a reinstall of my OS would be in order, too.
Anyhow, just getting my name in the ring in case it actually ISN'T my problem.

BTW, I'm having trouble installing plugins from the web site. That also may be on this end. But maybe not.

Did a little more checking on the plug-in problem. I tried to download the latest MP3 pluging for MC9 and got the message "..Failed to unzip file 'c:\windows\TEMP\enc_mp3.zip'.

Well, that's because it doesn't exist. Not in that directory or on any other drive.

Odd bug, started in build .110, but I hadn't had much time to watch TV on my PC, so I couldn't do much with it.

I'm using a VisionTek "Xtasy Everything" video card, which has an external "pod" TV-tuner.  There's a physical connection from the "pod" to the video card, and a physical connection from the "pod" to the sound line-in.

With MC configured properly, TV works great.  Since .110 though, there is no audio.  After much picking and clicking, I can get the audio to work.  Today, I finally found a pattern.

Upon starting TV (either after just launching MC, or after watching TV, switching to music, and then back to TV), there is no audio at all.  I have to go into "Configure TV...", hit the "Advanced" tab, and double-click the "TV Tuner..." entry.

Once the TV Tuner options panel appears, the audio starts right up.  I don't have to actually change anything, I just have to load up the panel.

Also, strangely enough, if MC isn't running and I plug my iPod in (via firewire), I hear about a second of TV audio pop out of the speakers.

No... definitely not. My MC software is 4 hours old. (113)

This might be cuz I'm running with a DLL Matt sent me with diags in it (JRImage.dll). It could also be due to the library updates in .112 - dunno. But as a matter of habit, if an add-on is older than what I'm running and wants to replace/install something, I get jittery.

WAY, WAY off-topic

I'm 31,000 feet from the nearest CO and stuck with 28.8 dial-up for the next century or so.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no banner ads for logged-in Interact users?

I got that too and said "Yes" and then got the "Failed to unzip .." message.

Upon trying again, I notice that the "MP3 Encoder - 2.0.53" plugin download has 0kb. This could explain something.

Library Backup Filename:  I noticed that the name given to library backup .zip files changed sligtly between 9.0.110 and 9.0.112.  This is fine.

While it's still fresh on your mind, can you do one more small thing?  Please make the Date portion of the filename use 2 digits for month and day fields (with leading zero), so that the filenames sort chronologically when sorted alphabetically.  This little touch would improve usability alot for me ;D (Always using Backup to shuffle the library back & forth between two sites).

Trivial code change - BIG benefit! It's a real time-saver for me.

Agreed. Even better, move the year to the front: MC Library Backup (Default - 2003-02-14).zip

Primé: MC Library Backup (Default - 2003-02-14-nn).zip ... it checks for the latest backup of the day and increments the trailing number. I manually add the per-day number a lot.

Best: 2003-02-14-nn Default MC Library Backup.zip

This sorts ALL backups by date, then by library. Hmmm... which seems good to me, but I could understand if people prefer the "Primé" suggestion. :) This calls for an option!

Bug: Use the Images View Scheme Group, preferably with images having "artist/album" naming.

Select an image in Thumbnail mode. Switch to Details (oh, how I miss Ctrl+U). The Selection is GONE!

Same thing whenever you change list style. I use the thumbnails to find the image I want, then want to switch to details to see all its stuff relative to those around it. But the selection is lost.

If I don't have names under the thumbnails, the only way to ID the file is to do File / Properties and that is certainly no time-saver.

Bugs with Portable Drive support:
(tested with USB-connected CF-card reader)

1. MC crashes if you start an upload and navigate to Playing Now or Media Library nodes while uploading is taking place.

2. Get a sharing violation if you queue a file for upload that is currently playing and attempt to view the upload queue or execute the upload.

3. The "Available memory size limit exceeded." warning comes up way too often (when reviewing the upload queue)...compare to MJ 8.0 and you'll see what I mean.

4. The "Available memory size limit exceeded." warning is displayed non-modal (should be modal) so it can be hidden behind MC and multiple warning dialog can be displayed if you click away from the upload queue and return.

5. During the upload process, MC becomes very, very sluggish and unresponsive...I don't recall this happining with MJ 8.0.

Others:
1. Can someone please get rid of the 'feature' that showed up a few weeks ago that automatically hides (minimizes) MC everytime you change the visualization window from internal-mode to windowed-mode?  It is so annoying...I don't want MC disappearing...I just want a windowed visualization window, please (MJ 8.0 did it right).

Hello guys at J River! I'm excited to try this build -- have been stuck on .110 for too long.

I'm not sure whether this has been addressed, but certainly haven't seen any bug fixes on it in the previous build releases:

Audio analysis (which was fixed in 110) _still_ has memory leak issues which date back to version 8. Reproduction of such errors is difficult!

The only common feature is whenever I have more than (say) 100 mp3's being analysed, it will have a memory leak. In such cases, it can crash on the third song. Having re-analysed such lists, the error really does seem to be random because no crash ever happens in the same place twice.

However, when only 50 songs are analysed at a time, it seems to go through them with no problem. This is not a rule, because it has crapped out on me once like this, but at least with only 50 songs, the machine doesn't grind to a complete stop while windows converts your entire harddrive to virtual memory.

If the problem is impossible to fix (and I don't see how that could be the problem!) then please at least put in some error checking to say: "ok, I'm analysing music and the amount of RAM that I'm taking up seems to be growing hugely. Let me stop, clear my memory and restart this one."

Another bug is the rather sketchy background support provided while analysing audio. I can do stuff with my mouse, but my keyboard is useless.

A last request along the lines of the audio analyser is to have a user selectable priority. Sometimes I would like to do other stuff and on my 800MHz machine, it can get a little tedious at times. I'd like to "idle" the process and then do some other stuff in the foreground without having to wait for glacial delays.

Thanks all the same -- at least the audio analyser gives the right results now, even if it doesn't work completely...

Bug:

Last Played and Number Plays are not updated when playing images.

... with nearly 1,000 pictures of flowers in Holland, I want to use Smartlists just like music. They're all beautiful, and I want to see them all over time, not repeating recently viewed images.

Bug:

Playback with Output Mode (default) is closing MC when double clicking a file. No core error messages though. Uncheck and double click is fine. Repeatable for me everytime.

Note: Was messing around with different output options when this occured. Changed back to default setting and it still kills MC regardless.

During playback of pre-existing playlists, MC will hang on the last few bars of a file, producing a stutter. At the same time, it will commence playing the next file in the queue as an overlay. The Stop button is frozen, can terminate only by exiting MC.

Not specific to any one format. Not running other programs when this occurs, besides firewall, anti-virus and cookie and pop-up stoppers. Haven't encountered this prior to 113.

Files in question play normally on an individual basis. This behavior is not exhibited when a playlist is compiled on the fly through 'Add to playing now'.

Also, at the beginning of a playlist, there will be a fragment of sound from the end of another file before playback of the first file in queue commences.

Replay Gain and Wide and Dynamix are activated in DSP Studio.

Matt-

Picked source and it now goes back to normal behavior with the double click. Also can change back to 16 bit, which is what I had initially when it started this.

Maybe not flushing commands if you don't reset to source?

Well, it seems to work again. Maybe I should just leave the settings alone. 16 bit is the best I can do with this thing anyway.

Media Server:
  • settings/options crashes Media Server (it is not the case with MC 9.0.112)
  • I cannot connect to Media Server (time-out) but I can connect if I use a small library instead of my normal big one (23000+ songs)
  • I got (once) a funny message: "Failed to connect to a server; Reason: i feel like it" !!!!

Issues/bugs with Thumbnail view

As a start... this "Album / Artist (Auto)" feature just doesn't help me. It's real close to annoying. What information can I glean from "(Multiple Artists)"? I suppose there are people who really like this, but I have never found it of benefit. I'd dearly like a global option that says "Use Artist" vs. "Use Artist/Album (Auto)". For stats... for thumbnails... global. This is clearly an issue of Individual Preference, not Right vs. Wrong.

I'm dyin' without Ctrl+U. I remember someone saying, "Toggle doesn't make sense for three views". Cool, I understand. How about "Next View Style" as the prompt for Ctrl+U? We just gotta have that hotkey back... mouse moves are time-consuming and the target is small. If I'm REALLY picky... Ctrl+U was a long reach for the left hand and "U" didn't have any correlation to a menu pick. Maybe there's a hotkey combination that's easier on the left hand? Ctrl+R seems unused... "Rotate View Style"?

OK, that being said, let's get into factual bugs. Look at the image above. I've selected the Artist "> France" and its children. But look at the top images. The first says "(Multiple Artists)", and the Properties box says "Artist: <varies>". How can this be? I've selected the Artist "> France" and it's shown in the Search Field at the top. Yet, MC9 has found "Thalys to Amsterdam" in a different Artist's collection ("> Belgium") and somehow pulled it into the Artist "> France" collection.

Here, I've selected "Thalys to Amsterdam", within "> France". Check out Properties - it's still showing "Artist: <varies>" and the "(Multiple Artists)" still shows under the first thumbnail. But then - most curiously - an image with the same attributes is displayed invidually. The only difference is the size of the images. Very puzzling.

Here I've selected "Thalys to Paris" in the "> Holland" collection. It sees the entries in the "> France" collection, showing "(Multiple Artists)" under the right image. But...

...here I've clicked on "Thalys to Amsterdam" within the "> Belgium" Artist collection. In this case, it has not detected the "Thalys to Amsterdam" Album within "> France", and it shows every image as it should. As far as I can tell, it seems that a list of Albums is not cleared when moving from Artist to Artist in the tree.

This last one is easier. When I scroll down by clicking the vertical scroll bar below the scroll handle, the view scrolls so that the top images are cut off at the top. I believe that, when such a scroll/page down is handled, the last row of images that are not fully visible should be scrolled to the top - and their tops aligned to the top of the window's client area.

Issues/Bugs sorting Smartlists

Minor bug: I did an Alt+PrintScreen and pasted it into Paint. Notice that the resizing border at the right has been lost. Seems like a Skins Issue.

Sorting: In this first image (above), I have used ~sort=random and the results are correct.

Here I added ~sort=artist after ~sort=random. I want each Artist's songs together, but randomly sorted. I can do Cumulative Sorting in the File View Window (on the right)... click a sort header for one column, then click another - and the second sort preserves the first sort's result order when all the entries in the second column are the same.

In the Smartlist, the first sort is lost... now the songs are in Track Order.

Hi Matt, hi Steve,
since the latest tree or four releases I've problems to install the ipod plugin. I've tried both versions, the one for V8 and the one for V9. Both installations terminate successfully, but the plugin isn't really installed. There were no changes after a reboot and no other behaviour after a complete new installation of V 9.0.113.
Any ideas?

Chris

Bugs(?):

- When Analyze Audio is in progress, cannot enter data in Find field in Media Library.

- When previously analyzed files are re-analyzed (because BPM = ?, for instance), some prior replay gain settings are substantially readjusted. Which were/are correct: old settings or new settings? Believe this occurs most often with files that were ripped with 'Calculate replay gain during ripping' selected, but not certain. If so, these files were ripped in prior builds, not 113.

- When I 'Add to playing now' with 'Shuffle tracks' elected, newly added files go to the end of the queue and do not play until all files previously entered have played. Recall some earlier discussion of this behavior but not whether it is deliberately programmed.

Matt-

I was tired when I read this the first time. Yes, even with source bitdepth MC will take a leap into oblivion. As long as source and two channel or mono is selected it will not shut down as soon as files are d-clicked.

Additional: It seems that it is only 4.0 and 5.1 that are causing this to happen. No matter what the source or sample rate are.

1)The playlist scrol bar does not work in Min-Me skins.

2)Clicking a *.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

Clicking on a *.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

3) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.  Clip protection is enabled.  Restarting the song usually eliminates the problem.

- fails with a 'Read track failed. Unknown error = 1' message although the cd I'm trying to rip, plays ok through MC

CD LABELLER
- does'nt print the jpg on the slimline front cover
- the print preview shows the jpg at 180 degrees to the main M/Editor screen

The 113 upgrade removed the Nomad II plugin.  I have reinstalled the plugin from the plug-in page, and it reports being successfully installed, but the Nomad does not appear in CD, DVD & Handhelds.

The plugin was working perfectly in .104 immediately before the upgrade to 113.

Actually, the ipod plugin disappeared too, and doesn't appear in the plugin list, even after a successful install.

UPDATE: since I couldn't get my portable devices to work, I installed .104 over the .113, since that was the last one I was using that worked.  Now MJ just crashes on startup.

If I put a 1 second long OGG track at the start of a playlist and hit play, MC sits there with "Buffering..." above the position slider.  It has to be stopped or track advanced to get by it.  The track plays fine if it's between 2 longer tracks.  Not a big deal but it could be annoying in certain cases.  If you want the track, let me know.

I'm also still having the problem with the volume control not working under XP.  The system has 2 sound devices.

Hi Matt,

I reported a problem with ASIO sound after Version .87.  I have experimented with both hardware and software configurations, and I think I have found the problem.

At least on my system,  having an external USB 2.0 CDR attached causes some type of conflict that degrades the sound.  I will try and update the drivers to see if that helps, but it is a 'generic' model, so I don't know how available they are. However, this was not a problem with versions .87 and prior.  Right now though, with the drive unplugged it sounds BEAUTIFUL!!

I would like to submit a new report that:

. with an RME Digi 24/96 I cannot talk to the card at anything other than  44.1 in all modes (not just ASIO), and when I return to the DSP setup screen the defaults always are displayed (not how I left the screen). do you just close by 'x' the panel (i did not see another way to exit).

. the last few seconds of the last song in a playlist are truncated.

Regards,
Lynn

YADB

When doing YADB lookups MC kept showing me the YADB failed to find info over and over.

Artist: Madonna
Album: Madonna
Year: 1983

I terminated MC9 and The Please Wait... Gathering Infformation and Updating Box Came up and i could not terminate it.

Terminating MC9 in the task manager was the only way to get out of that.

When i Rebooted MC9 and tried the cd again, it did not find any info (This should be a popular CD) but it also did not send me into an endless loop.
