JRemote on iPad - no connection
« on: July 06, 2024, 07:16:59 am »

Version:MC 31.0.87 (64 bit)

iPad JRemote can't connect to MC almost regulary.
When it does work it behaves badly and disconects at a certain point.
No problem with JRemote on Android.

Could be the network.  Probably a weak signal.  Try power cycling everything, including network devices.

I was away for a while...
The problem is not wifi.
It persists with MC31. Very annoying. At a vertain point no connection and that's it.
It requires support via remote session.

Using any sort of firewall or some sort of VPN (including the iCloud Private Relay) or proxy?

Still waiting for help.

It sometimes connects, but then disconnects after a while.

In short, I can't use it to play with iPad and heads (which I do a lot).

The problem is not wifi.

I don't agree actually, most issues like this it's a network (Wi-Fi, router, firewall, port forwarding, etc.) issue so I wouldn't be so quick to eliminate the Wi-Fi (or the network as a whole) as the potential source of these issues, because 9 times out of 10 it's definitely network-related. Another thing that makes me think this is a network issue and not a JRemote issue is because it's not being currently reported by anyone else and a lot of people use JRemote for iOS so there'd be other reports coming in.

Asking again, on the iPad does Panel work reliably? If not then it is your network/device.

As mentioned before, the problem is with ipad only.
It works with android cell phone so it's obviously not a network or wifi problem.

I upgraded to version 3.42, still the same problem.
With the new version JRemote crashes while trying to connect.

Take a look at Panel.  It's on the wiki.  Try it as a test.

Panel is a remote like JRemote, but it's not an app, it runs in a web browser. So on an iPad it'd be accessible via the IP address of the device the MC server is running from in Safari using the instructions found on the Wiki.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Panel

This is a good test to try, because if it happens in Panel too, it's something on the iPad causing the issues (and/or it's potentially network related however if Android devices work it's likely limited to the iPad) and isn't a JRemote-specific issue. Seeing how you mentioned it works fine on an Android device, I'm inclined to think that it's iPad-related and not JRemote-related, but using Panel as a test should be able to confirm if it is or not. If it does happen on in Panel on the iPad, it also might be worth trying Panel in a web browser on the Android devices too as a control test.

I try http(s)://[my ip address]:52200 and I get "cant connect to the server".
I take address from iPad Settings | WiFi | my wifi | info.

I try https://jriver.com/panel.html with my access key.
I get "This connection is not private" and Safai refuses to continue.

Crrently I can't connect with ipad at all. Only with cell phone.

Did you try port 52199? Because port 52200 requires SSL and if you're going to use port 52200 you'll need to use the Enable SSL option under Media Network's Advanced settings area then click on SSL Certificate to generate a self-signed SSL certificate.

You'd also have to use http:// and not https:// unless you setup the SSL certificate first. To bypass Safari's feature to force HTTPS you'd have to manually type in the http:// part, e.g. http://[my ip address]:52199 and/or turn off the Private Relay feature (which enforces HTTPS).

The problem here it’s that after some minutes working, maybe half an hour, It doesn’t respond more but in settings it says it’s still connected. At the same moment if I connect trough panel in the same iPad with chrome it works fine.

I am on 32.0.58 but happens from at least 31.

On other devices like Samsung Z Flip 3 and MO 4Media works without any problems.

Sorry, mistake, I tried 52199, not 52000. As should.
Tried both http and https.

Also tried ipad Stettings | Reset network.

Tried disabling Private Relay? Private Relay enforces HTTPS only, which can cause Panel not to load by default due to the HTTP connection, hence the connection is not private error.

192.168.x.x44 is the local IP address of the server MC is running on in this case and only applies on the local area network. The other IP address is the one assigned by your ISP/mobile carrier.

Indeed.

Both fails on iPad. works with my android cell phone.

Now trying with iPhone. It connected, the app doesn't respond to any command, than disconnects. Fails to wake it up.
JRemote Settings is disabled.

Can it be other than a specific problem with apple devices?

I have the same problem sometimes. I have not really an idea, but it only happens if I play a video through MC in the Living Room on my Media Renderer cotrolled by JRemote. If I then in parrallel use the Apple Internet Browser, then JRemote sometime looses the connection.
It never happens if I use JRemote to control the Workstation.

Network Architecture is:

WS (MC + Server, Docs, IMG;Audio;Video); File Server (Video:Movies & Series from BD, DVD)->Ethernet->Router->WLAN->Repeater->Ethernet->Switch->Ethernet->Media Renderer (MC Client) | All Mesh Metwork, WiFi 5

The problem is that you can not have a deciated Wifi Network for Streaming and a 2nd WiFi Network for CTRL, Browsing etc. I have no solution to that.

Opened this thread 9 months ago and nothing has changed.
I Have learned JRiver has no support.
It stopped working on my iPhone and iPad.
It works only with Android devices.
I don't see it bothers anybody at the company.
From time to time I get a PR email from JRiver's person, that issue or another.
I reply with my problem - never get a reply back.
I short, this company doesn't have support for it's product or the will to assist its customers. This forum is not a real support. Remote session is needed, but it seems JRiver doesn't know this option exist.
It a is a disgrace.
Sorry to bother you.

It's hard to diagnose and fix an issue when nobody else is reporting it. Most times when that happens the issue is on your side at the network or device(s) level.

If you're absolutely sure that you're using the latest JRemote and the Local Network permission is granted and it still happens, my guess would be it's network related or something on your iPad.

I recently got an iPad 10th generation myself, it's running iPadOS 18.3.2 and JRemote runs fine on it, no disconnections or connection issues. So, at least in my opinion based on my own experience, it's likely the issue is on your side and not a JRemote/JRiver issue.

It's not on my side for sure.

I was able to connect with any Android cell phone I tried but not with any Apple device.

I have have tried at least five in recent months.

So it's quite obvious this software has some unresolved issue with Apple.

Are you absolutely sure you're using the latest JRemote 3.44 and the Local Network permission is granted in the Settings app > Apps > JRemote? Double check and make sure of that, it won't connect if the Local Network permission isn't granted. This was an issue and there were reports of not being able to connect (due to Local Network permission not being prompted) however JRiver fixed it and released JRemote 3.44 to prompt the user for the Local Network permission and all non-connect reports were resolved, except this one.

Have you tried fully removing/uninstalling the app, restarting the iPad and reinstalling JRemote from the App Store, making absolutely sure to grant the Local Network permission when it asks and/or doing it manually? It absolutely needs that permission or it's not going to connect.

Absolutly sure.
I purchased last update. re-installed JRemote twice... tried everthing.
Aleways get timeout error.

Never a problem with my OnePlus or Galaxy smart phones.
Doesn't work with any Apple device I tried.
Conclusion?

I still think it has to be something on your network or something specific to your Apple devices. If it was a widespread issue with JRemote itself it'd be getting reported as a lot of people, myself included, use iOS/iPadOS devices and it works just fine for me. I just tried it, both the access key and local IP address works fine. I mean, what's everyone else's experience?

Never had a problem here, certainly seems to be something caused by the local wifi/IOS Setup.

Some things to try (apologies if they have been attempted)

Turn off Private WiFi (Settings -> WiFi -> Your Network Turn off Private Wi-Fi Address) , reconnect and test. Android and IOS do this differently

Do the same with Low Data Mode - Android doesnt have this feature

Maybe try disabling IPv6 on the router

Also possible DHCP issues, and maybe the device is being hit. Assign the IOS device a static IP/Gateway and DNS. Use 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

Try connecting to the wifi via the Android and then connect the IOS via the android hot spot rather than directly. See if you can hit MC then

Tried all that, one by one

I still think it has to be something on your network or something specific to your Apple devices. If it was a widespread issue with JRemote itself it'd be getting reported as a lot of people, myself included, use iOS/iPadOS devices and it works just fine for me. I just tried it, both the access key and local IP address works fine. I mean, what's everyone else's experience?

It Ain't Necessarily So...
The fact there are no complaints here doesn't mean much.
Apple installs are not the same for every Apple device in the world.
The fact this problem sticks to five different Apple devices says it all.

What's the dfference for JRiver between Android and iOS?
iOS works diffrently with network profiles so I'm sure JRiver doesn't cover all issues.

I went back and re-read this thread.  There are two problems I see.

1.  You assume that it's a JRiver problem.

2.  You haven't answered many questions or tried what you've been advised.

Complaining about the service you're getting only makes your posts harder to follow.  People are trying to help you.

Make sure you're using the latest version of JRemote.  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,140516.0.html

...

I'm working with MC 33.0.71 (64bit) and he latest JRemote version.

It started long ago, first many disconections, then can't connect at all.

I'm using a dedcated pc for music, nobody works on it, no changes done.

I have a new pc, same problem.

Same router, same ethernet, same wifi.

Tried everything advised here.

Can you take screenshots of all the settings you're using in JRemote? Are you using an access key or local IP address to connect? What port being used? On the dedicated PC in Media Center's Options > Media Network, can you take screenshots of that too?

What is the version of JRemote?

Does Panel work?  It's documented on the wiki and it's easy to test.

If Panel works, that's good.  It tells you that the ports are open.

JRemote should work then.  If not, it's probably some Apple setting protecting you.  Panel works because Apple isn't blocking Safari.

Are you using any special security software on the iPad?  Especially anything not Apple.
