There was a problem loading the selected encoder
« on: November 22, 2024, 02:36:54 pm »

I can't get the mp3 encoder to work, all of a sudden. Anyone else having gotten this message? Can I install the encoder again?

Reboot.  Make sure you've configured Windows Defender.  Don't use another antivirus.

Tried that. Opened the firewall for "external" something that was the only thing not checked wrt Media Center. Didn't help. And no, I don't use anything else than Windows Defender.

Also reboot, of course. And then I uninstalled Media Center 33, and reinstalled it. When I tried to choose the mp3 option, this same thing came up after a little while of "Loading the necessary..." or something:

Oh, and there is also a problem checking for updates, apparently (through "Check for updates"). And when I try to click on the link for the latest build here in the forum, the page cannot be accessed because of a certificate problem. You know the page that comes up? Red danger triangular sign with an exclamation mark, and among other things this bit: net::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

I have a few questions:

1) What version of Windows are you running (7, 8.1, 10, or 11)?
2) What is the exact URL that gave you the certificate error and in what browser?
3) Is the time/date set correctly on your pc?
4) You mention the MP3 encoder but your screenshot shows that FLAC is the encoder selected?
5) Can you confirm that your firewall is permitting internet traffic to/from MC33?

This information should be helpful in providing other things that you can try.

Ok, thank you for engaging. Here goes:

1)Windows 11
2)https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v33/latest/MediaCenter330043-x64.exe
    - In the address line, the https bit is like this on the page that then comes up: https See image for what it says on the page.
I use Microsoft Edge.
3)Yes
4)This is because it reverts to the default encoder. In this case, the FLAC one. I try to choose mp3, and then that message comes up.
5)Yes, Media Center 33 is on the allowed list, checkmarks in the right places. Also Media Center Extender units(?) - I'm translating here. I don't know if units is the right word. Devices, maybe?

Something on your side is causing the certificate to appear invalid. I just checked the link and the certificate in both Chrome and Edge and it's valid here. You can try clicking Advanced and post a screenshot of what it says here. There's multiple things which could cause this to happen (unless Bob is doing something server-side and not enough time has passed for it to "pick up" so to speak).

Is your Windows system time set correctly with the correct date and time zone? You might right clicking on the clock > Adjust date & time > and when that pops up make sure it's set correctly, then under Additional settings use the Sync now button to sync time to Windows' time server. Having incorrect time can cause issues like this.

You might also try changing your system DNS to a better one, e.g. Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS and see if that makes any difference. Also clearing the web browser's cache may help as well.

jriver-cdn.com is hosted by CloudFlare, they manage the certificate and it seems to be fine everywhere that I tested. Seems odd to cause such a problem.

Thank you guys for engaging. Here is the text under the "Advanced" tab:

-------------------
files.jriver-cdn.com uses encryption to protect your information. When Microsoft Edge tried to connect to files.jriver-cdn.com this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be files.jriver-cdn.com, or a WiFi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Microsoft Edge stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.

You can't visit files.jriver-cdn.com at the moment because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.
------------------

To answer the Awesome Donkey: I have checked, and synced and put on automatic time zone, which wasn't enabled originally. The time was correct to the second to begin with.
However, I have no idea how to change DNS, nor do I actually know what it is. Dynamic Network Service, perhaps, in which case it's somewhere in my brain  :P

UPDATE: I have now tried to rip the same CD using another computer. It's slightly older and a bit less butch, but otherwise everything's the same. Apart from that one being cabled to the router, not by wifi. And I get all the same problems and messages. So it's not the computer. Is something wrong with my fiber-whashamacallems, bobbins, gizmos?

To clarify, this has never happened before on any of my computers. Neither do I have anything new installed, soft- nor hardware since I successfully ripped a CD last. Apart from a new TV, but....

Do you have any other web browsers besides Edge to try the link in? Like Chrome or Firefox, to see if the same error comes up? It's a longshot honestly, but on the off-chance it's isolated to Edge along. And you're not using any VPNs or proxies or anything like that, correct?

To change the system DNS: https://support.myownconference.com/en/article/how-to-configure-google-dns-on-windows-11-for-faster-internet-19aw0jh/

It sounds like a network issue, whether it be the modem/router or upstream on the ISP itself, something's not right and is preventing the encoder from being downloaded (among other things).

Thanks, Donks! (Sorry, couldn't help it)

I think I will refer this to the young lad who is responsible for the setup in this house. I try to keep my machines as clean as possible, so I'll save the browser thing for later. Also, it shouldn't have an impact on Media Center's communication, right?

Unless anyone has a lightbulb moment, I think the next post might be me telling you what the guy found out. Thanks again, so far.  :)
