Questions concerning Media Server
« on: Yesterday at 10:44:33 am »

I have connected a Client to the MC Media Server and now I have some questions:

1. Is it the expected behaviour that the client copies the whole library from the server if there are any changes in the library on the server since the last connection?

2. When I play tracks on the client the 'Last Played' information is not updated, neither on the client nor on the server.

The information in the Wiki https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Server is not clear:
It says: "... any changes you make on the client are not saved on the server until you select Library Sync... from the Library menu selection." and later "The client will send play count and last played information back to the server."
Does that mean I have to perform Library Sync everytime I want an update of Play Count and Last Played or should this happen automatically?

- Client keeps a full copy of the DB, but each sync only transmits a Delta of the changes needed to bring the local DB up to date.
- You need to connect the Client with non-guest authentication, otherwise it's in read-only mode and no changes will be relayed back to the server, including Play count
- The number of plays / Last Played is only updated when the track is played at least 50% (or 90%? I'm not sure)
- Client will automatically sync changes to the server about once per minute (and on startup/exit). No need to manually do a Library Sync.

Thanks for the quick answer.

How do I "connect the Client with non-guest authentication"?

Under File -> Library -> 'Connect to Remote Library' there is just Library Server where I can enter the access key.

Is the information in the Wiki outdated then?

On the server, you need to set up authentication (login / password).

Thank you all, it is working now.

I wish this was described clearly in the Wiki or in a manual.
And this is what I would expect of a commercial product!

Your first post was 4 hours before your "it's working now". The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

A few years ago my company the company I work for paid about 250.000€ (IIRC) for a NetApp SAN appliance + a couple PB of storage, plus I don't know how much for a support contract. We had an open support ticket about inconsistent folder timestamps (non-POSIX compliant) for 18 months - this was causing occasional data loss as different clients were seeing different timestamps and sometimes overwriting newer data. It was finally solved after a major NetApp OS upgrade.

Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, Autodesk, take your pick - it doesn't matter how much you pay. Often the larger the company the worse the service, unless you have the CEO's number on speed dial.

Don't get me wrong. I don't complain about the service. This is perfect. My problem is the lack of documentation. That's why one has to ask for everything.

If there was a clear statement in the wiki that I need authentification I would not have to ask in the first place.

I really like your software, I just wish the documentation would be better.

I don't disagree there.

Both authentication and library sync are discussed in the wiki topic on Media Server.
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Server

A Google search will often find you an answer if you add jriver to your question.

We're considering raising the price to 250.000€.

This is a great way to solve all issues. No customers, no problems!  ;D

Jim, this is the entry in the Wiki about authentication:

"Authentication
If your Library Server is available to the Internet (or if you are not sure if it is), use Authentication. In the server options, enable Authentication and set a user name and password that must be provided by the client before the connection is allowed."

It is not mentioned there that this is also needed for syncing back the information. And this is what I mean.

To me it seems like you guys at JRiver are proud of your 'secret knowledge'.
But ok, if the CEO thinks that googling for information is the best way to find help I won't argue.

To me it seems like you guys at JRiver are proud of your 'secret knowledge'.
I get your frustration, but, that's unfair, uncalled for, and unnecessary.

Consider these things:
The JRiver team is small.
The software is, let's be honest, even for first time purchasers, not expensive, and for upgraders? a no brainer. Bear this in mind...

MC development moves fast. Maybe not as fast now as in years gone by, but it's still, constantly evolving. I've been using it more than twenty years, and still learn things new to this day. Attempting to document a user manual in this environment would require full-time staff for the output, and, internally, would require time whilst changes were conveyed from those responsible for the changes to those responsible for manual.

The manual? Honestly, How? It started back at V9.0.0.1 ~2003, with Media Jukebox preceding it way further back than that. If someone presented me with that manual, I would never, ever read it. I would come here and ask the question, get my answer, and be happy. I have a .chm help file here (thanks Lisa) that'll give you plenty of reading and cover you up to circa v12... Would you like me to share that with you?

I know that not everyone gets an answer, which is another thing aligned with your quoted comment....

Nothing is a secret. It's all here, on the internet, publicly available to all. The user just needs to craft their searches to zoom in on their area of interest and then, the chances of answers are high... If you don't get an answer, it's because no-one knows, not because we all know but prefer to keep it secret.

JRiver Media Center has immense scope. It will fit a vast number of different usage scenarios. Whether your focus is on asset management or playback, or both. Big software companies, think the likes of Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, off the top of my head, are regularly called out because they dictate to the user, who has generally paid a high price for a seat, how they must use their new software. Good luck interacting with their CEO's about that. You got a problem with Windows, what do you do, read the manual or head for Google?

JRiver gives you the choice. It can feel strange to begin with. We are worried, nervous to move away from the given defaults in case we break something. You won't break anything. The MC 'playing field' is enormous. Over time, you can mould it to fit your space, such that it continues to work flawlessly, and you are so far removed from 'default' you can't remember what 'default' was... Then all you care about is that you never lose the setup you have, and then you learn that the software has your back, and you learn how and why, and you will never lose it.

Some of us, as we 'get it', hang around, grateful for the non-JRiver people who helped us get started, and find that we can, in turn, help others, and is so often the case, we learn more from the assistance we offer.

We're not a secret society. We ask for nothing in return, though the occasional "Thank you" is always appreciated.

It's not often I put my JRiver 'fanboy' hat on, and I totally appreciate that English might not be your primary language, but your quoted line annoyed me a little, and I have been, for other computer related reasons, really, quite grumpy this week... So you get the above to read :D
