My previous sorting problem has been sorted, see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=43455.0 Thanks Alex B and Tinear  :)

That issue dealt with sorting [artist] - [album] - [track #] - [name] and by using that code in Burn/Options/CD DVD File Naming/Custom

But I wonder if MC12 is clever enough to burn a playlist when the playlist is a random selection of songs by various artists and from various albums and maintaining the integrity of that random order in the burnt cd   ?

Can anyone suggest the rules to apply.

I assume you are trying to burn a data CD as you did before. Here's a step by step guide:

1) Gather the files in a standard playlist in your preferred order.
2) Open the Action Window > Burn Disc window, select the burn options you are going to use and press "Next".
3) Select the playlist in the tree and drag & drop it into the AW > Burn window.
4) In the burn window press first the Details button so that you can verify the track order in the burn queue.
5) Then press the Options button and go to: CD/DVD File naming > Custom... and enable the "Prefix list order to the CD filename" option. This step will add sequence numbers in front of the filenames. This setting will stay as a default until you change the file naming options again.
6) Burn the disc.

All players that use alphabetical sorting will see the tracks in the correct order.

The buttons and options mentioned in the steps 4 and 5 are highlighted in the following screenshots  (which I already posted in the thread you linked):

Thanks for your patience Alex B

I have committed these tips to memory; have tested them and am pleased that you were able to help.

Incidentally, I tried just using [name] as the rule and it too maintained the sorting order for an apparently random playlist.

I updated the CD/DVD File Naming Wiki Page to include this information in much more detail.  Check it out here: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/CD/DVD_File_Naming

As always Glynor - thanks for your contributions.

My son has that same shirt you are wearing in your avatar, I still laugh every time I see it...

Gotta love Threadless.

No problem.  It was very nice of Alex to write that up for the second time.  I figured I could make it so there wasn't a third time.

EDIT: Hmmmm.... The wiki seems to be having some issues right now.  I added a note to the discussion page on that page.
