Please help! MC Image folder layout view
« on: January 24, 2008, 12:07:55 pm »

Hi

Is it possible to have MC display my Image folders the same way it is viewed in explorer , like in the screenshot of explorer below, with folders/albums?, and with the name of the folder showing?

Thanks

What I'd like...

What I have ...

Nope. Your best bet there is to just manually open your Pictures folder. Although I did just try creating a shortcut to my Pictures folder, then draggin that shortcut into the Documents media view scheme in MC. The shortcut imports, and if you double click it, it will open that folder in windows explorer. Not sure that really fulfills your need, but it was kind of neat to find out that that's possible. Opens up some new possibilities.

Well, basically I want to stop using explorer and just use MC to explore my Image folders, but get the same effect using MC.

Thanks Doof

Try the stock viewscheme:
Images > Disk Location

If you switch from Pane to Location with the header menu, you'll get stacks.

You can edit the viewscheme to start anywhere you like on the hard drive.

You can't get the same view.

The views you can get can be seen by clicking twice on the image tab at the top of the tree.  This opens the Image tab.  You can add, edit, or delete the view schemes you see there.  Right click to start.

So is there no way to get them "grouped"(stacked) according to the folders they are in? I'm not necessary wanting to see the actual "folder icon", just have them grouped in that way.

And having the groups/stacks having the name of the folder location.

Disk location view schemes create folder stacks.

Try this...

Click on the Images view scheme. Then click the little arrow right next to the Images view icon, you should get a list open up below it that lists addition view schemes. Unless you've customized them, I think you should have one called "Disk Location". Select that one.

Now, in the right hand pane, where you see your files, open up the menu that says "Location" and choose "root" instead of "pane". While you're here, go to the Options menu item that's here and make sure that "Show Stacks" is checked.

Is this what you're looking for?

Ah,yes Doof. That's pretty much what I was looking for. I didn't have "show stacks" ticked.

The only thing now , is it possible for me to create a view scheme, based on the "disk Location" view scheme, but which would open up at a specific location... eg. "Web reference" as seen in the original screenshots above?

At present , the only way I thought I could do it, was where right under the "disc location" view scheme  where one sees the folders, I went to navigation and added it to favourites .... but then "sigh" , as you see in the new screenshot, it doesn't give me the option "location" or "root" in the pane menu, neither the ability to "stack".
It's strange though isn't it? If the folder tree is actually part of the "Disc Location" view scheme, shouldn't everything under the "Disc Location" view scheme have the same pane menu options? (root/location/stacks/ etc...)

So , as I already asked, ... "is it possible for me to create a view scheme, based on the "disk Location" view scheme, but which would open up at a specific location... eg. "Web reference" as seen in the screenshots?"

Thanks very much.

Yup. Just right click on the Disk Location view scheme, and select Edit View Scheme. In this box you should see "Location (root)". Select that and click the Edit button. Then just change the Base Path setting to the location you want and keep clicking OK until you're out.

BBBrrriiilliiaant!! ;D 8)
Thanks Doof, you're pretty good at this. I'm starting to feel a little guilty that I owe quite a bit, and probably will still alot in future.

We should have some kind of reward system for everytime someone feels they have received a BIG help from another member on this forum.
Maybe a virtual case of beers :P or something.

Thanks to everyone.

Sorry! I just need to post again.

I'd like to stress a point.
This is one of the features that I have been looking for since the day I bought MC, which was a good couple of months ago.
It was something I so much wished for ... and what do you know , MC was able to have done it all the time.

And this isn't the first time I had this situation. A few times I had asked if something was possible , or requested a feature ... and I was either told it wasn't possible and sometimes told that there was no plans for such a feature ... only to find out a while later that the feature actually did exist and had been there all the time.

My point I'm getting at is ...
Through words, things often seem to be misunderstood, and either the "author" might describe it incorrectly, ... or the reader might understand it incorrectly ...leading to the wrong information given or received.
No one's fault, just the way it is sometimes.
We maybe just need to read a little closer, choose our words a little more carefully, and sometimes even repeat ourselves if we feel it necessary.

Thanks again to all.
Sleeping well 2night. MC just got a whole lot better 4 me  8) ;D

Is there anything obvious that would have made this easier to find?

Is there anything obvious that would have made this easier to find?

Well what I automatically expected from when I first started using MC, and discoverd the "Disc Location" view scheme, is that as I said above ...
Quote
It's strange though isn't it? If the folder tree is actually part of the "Disc Location" view scheme, shouldn't everything under the "Disc Location" view scheme have the same pane menu options? (root/location/stacks/ etc...)

...what I expected is that everything under the parent view scheme, including the folders, would have had the same menu and layout rules as the parent view scheme(i.e. Disc Location view scheme in this case).
What I was trying to do at that stage was then add that folder (folder from under the view scheme) to my Navigation Favourites so that I could access it properly.

The other problem is that for new users ( and for users that aren't interested in any technical stuff, and simply just want things to work for them) , MC is quite (if I might say) not so user friendly for the average joe ... and obviously needs knowledge on how to create ( many might not even know they could create ) a view scheme ( expressions obviously being quite complicated and intimidating if u know nothing) .
The thing for me was, that although I now knew that I could create a view scheme based on "Disc Location" , I didn't know that (or think of) I could edit the "Location" in Step1.

Having said that MC isn't the easiest program to discover feature and ability wise, it is also the reason why I love it so much. 8)
Keeps my mind interested all the time ... but just a little frustrating sometimes, when I have no clue what's going on. :o

I'm not exactly sure how one could make it easier, but hopefully my explanations helped in some way. :-\

Congrats on a nice job, it's definitely one of my favs.

There's a new version? I'll have to check it out...

PS. what's different in the "newer " version? I don't see any difference ...

On the main player bar with the pause, next, stop button etc, check out the back ground of that and you will see it lines up better with the buttons then the old version in your pictures. :)
