Try updating DirectX from Microsoft's site.

Possibly the video driver, too.

yup, tried updating directx and the vid drivers. then rebooted after each install, then tried restarting comp with it going right into theaterview. same error. then i hit esc. and it brings jriver to standard view then i chose theaterview and it works. also if i close jriver completelly after computer is up and running, check process and services JRiver isnt running, and then double click jriver its starts up in theaterview with no errors.

its just when i reboot machine thats when i'm getting the error.

is my issue similiar to this one maybe?   i dont wanna try it until someone tells me to.

Try setting a delay.

How are you launching MC on reboot?  If you do it via the Task Scheduler (rather than just, for example, adding a shortcut to the Startup folder in the Start Menu), you have a lot more control over how it launches.  One of the options is to delay the launch, I believe.

I'm also suspicious that this may be related to this: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55910.0

I really wonder if you have some hardware issues with that machine.

I added a shortcut to the Startup folder in the Start Menu. I've never used task scheduler, is this something build into jriver?

No.  The Windows Task Scheduler.  It can do all sorts of tasks "on a schedule", including "at login" and stuff like that.  It is quite powerful.  Here's a nice, very basic, guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/12444-task-scheduler-create-new-task.html

thanks Glynor, yeah ive never used it... I will read up on it while these tests are running. the memtest is going as we speak although im still only using 2 Gig. the other 2 gig should be returning this week. but figure i'll try and figure out the crashing issue right away.

In Windows 7, all of my startup tasks are actually defined through the Task Scheduler, rather than the Startup folder or anywhere else.  One nice feature is that if you have a bootup task that usually needs a UAC prompt, you can do that through the Task Scheduler and give it "run as an administrator" privileges and it won't fail or UAC prompt each time.

Yep.  I leave it on.  I hated it in Vista, but the refined settings in Windows 7 make it MUCH better.  It doesn't bother me at all.

There are a TON of different trigger options for the Task Scheduler.  This is just a sample of the "at logon" settings, but you can see that it does include a "delay task for" setting:

Jim thanx for telling me to try delay.
Glynor thanks for elaborating, guiding me in the right direction, and being so helpful it worked :)

For some reason when i chose 30 seconds. i get the error, but if I choose 1 minute then it starts up fine. I Wonder what the reasoning is behind that?  maybe a certain windows service hasnt started by the time jriver tries to load theaterview? I'm just really happy its working :)

i have another post here as you know about possible hardware issues. But it would be nice if windows 7 had a service watcher in task scheduler so that when a program stopped working that it could autoclose it and then reopen it for you.. a buddy of mine is a coder and he's gonna send me app to try that he thinks may work for those times it may crash... will just be easier for those who are here and are not computer savvy.
Anyway thanks again guys, and i'll keep you informed on the htpc hardware tests once i get the replacemment ram.

Girder can do that (watch for a service to stop running and restart it).  However, if the service actually crashes but doesn't unload until you hit an OK button, I'm not sure how much a simple general-purpose app that doesn't know how to interface with MC would be capable of doing.
