Now, this may be an issue with my particular remote... I have Win 7 certified remote by Rosewill I bought from NewEgg.com.

I can use the remote to browse and launch a video.  while playing the up/down arrows actiavate settings menus, etc.

I read on the screen that the green button will exit the video but it does not.  At first it launched Windows Media Center, so I disabled it in the options.

I have to walk over to my HTPC and plug in a usb mouse and click around until I can get it to go back into the menus which is not very impressive or convenient.

Can someone explain the proper use of the remote to me during video playback or do I have a remote incompatability?  Maybe I can "train" my remote ?

My remote has a "back" button as well but this does not do anything.

I am on the 18.0.48.  OS = Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit.

AFter studying the wiki again, I can't seem to locate the "section" which describes how to properly use a Media Center Remote to control video playback.

Can someone provide a link to the appropriate documentation for me ?

Is there another forum more suited to my question ?

Use the arrow keys to navigate.  Left arrow will move you back out.

If the Green Button isn't working, maybe the remote is defective.  Does it work with WMC?

Try the Wiki on "Media Center Remote" for more.

The remote functions properly when playing audio.  left arrow navigates backwards, etc as you would expect.

I just retested my remote in video.  I have four arrow keys that surround an OK button.  When I launch a video in theater mode it begins to play normally.  when I press Left arrow it jumps 5 seconds back in time.

When I press the STOP button nothing happens.

When I press the button labelled "back" nothing happens.

When I press the Green Windows button, nothing happens.

Pressing the pause button does nothing.

When playing audio, all these buttons function normally. Pause will pause, stop will stop, left arrow navigates back, the back button navigates back, etc.

What else can I be overlooking... I know this topic just sounds like Ia m some dumbo who does not know how to use the software but all I know to do is report this and get help.

I just determined that if I use right arrow and fast forward to the end of the video that when it completes, it will return the menu system.  so, I guess as a work around I can just fast forward to the end of any video in order to get out of it.

What you're seeing isn't normal.  Either the remote doesn't work or something else is stealing keystrokes.  Any other software installed that might do that?  Microsoft?  Logitech?  Something MediaKey?

Try the arrow keys on a keyboard.  F11 will act like a Green Button.

This is a clean install of windows with no other software installed.  During the install I needed a mouse and pluged a micrsoft usb mouse in to install windows.

I just looked and I have the following installed:

Adobe Reader X
Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (I uninstalled this)
Microsoft Security Essentials
VNCUltra Server (so I can remote control server occasionally with out a mouse and keyboard)
Microsoft Silverlight

the rest is just drivers - realtek audio, etc ...

Would any of these interfere with the remote ?  I will also test again now that I have removed that mouse and keyboard junk that windows installed automatically.

PS: If VNCUltra is the issue - what is a good alternative for this with a client for my main desktop allowing me to remote in and control the machine to load updates, etc ?

Also, are there any negatives to using MS Sec Essentials?  I told it to ignore my media folders during scans but real time checking is still on.

after removing that microsoft mouse and keyboard package, the "back" now navigates back.  The left arrow still move the video back 5 seconds.

That's progress.  The left and right arrows seek when you play a video.  Press stop first if you want to exit.  The Green Button probably works now, too.

That is the correct function of the left arrow, when the movie plays. Duration can e changed under video in options. Down arrow should initiate the OSD and then left and right arrow is used to navigate the OSD. Pressing stop on your remote while the movie plays, should stop playback.

There is a whole section under option, where you can program the behaviour of your remote, allthough the basic navigation above should work out of the box with a standard Media Center remote.

Bad news... I got the back button to function once.  After a reboot, it no longer works and I have uninstalled everything that I feel could be an issue here.  It must be Intel motherboard drivers....

My installed software:

An error I got while playing a 720p MKV video:

At this point all I know to do is buy a new remote.  Any thoughts before I do that?  (not available locally so I have to order)

Do the arrow keys on the keyboard work?

Also try Esc and F11 on the keyboard.

ruh roh ... Houston we have a problem.  I believe this is a v18 bug.

I just reinstalled 17.0.186 and everything functions normally.  remote works perfectly.  so its not my remote.  Either there are changes in the player module or some settings that I have in 18 are interfering with proper remote function while in video playing mode.  Keep in mind that audio functions as expected.

As a test I went back to v18 and the problem is still there.  something else I noticed... When I launch a video in v17 the video just starts.  In v18 I can see the blue windows desktop for about .5 seconds then the video starts... whats up with that ?

I am going to need more help with this issue since at some point I plan on moving to 18 permanently. I do understand that this is a beta version so anything I can do to help out just let me know.

FYI: I just tried 18.0.51 ... same issue.

I need to do some more testing in this also. I have had some remote issues with 18 also. Was waiting to post until I had more time to be precise about the issues.

Good.  In the end I would say the only issues I know about now are:

1.  Green Button does not exit video
2.  Back Button does not return to menus (not left arrow)
3.  Pause button does not work

In my case I feel this is a show stopper since the only work around is to use a keyboard which Ido not normally have plugged in, or use right arrow and fast forward to the end of the video.

"it works on my pc" <- famouse last lines by all programmers :)

Clearly there is a difference in v17 and v18 here on my new clean build of Win 7 64bit.

My motherboard is the newer Intel DH77EB that supports the Core Ivy Bridge processors.  Could there be something about this that is different on my machine than yours and only affects v18 ? (ie bios or drivers)

Can you compare my System info to yours and see if anything stands out ?

Just found this thread when looking for a fix - I too have this issue! (Genuine HP receiver). Play, Pause, Stop, Info, Green etc do not work - the other things that work most of the time are the ok button and the arrow keys.

If I disable then reenable the MCE remote under options then it works some times - but after a reboot it goes again.

When I also do a search for remotes to map keys it tells me it cant find it - any one have any more ideas or need more info?

Thanks

What version of Windows, MC18 are you on ?  Also what hardware are you using ?

I can't start using MC18 until the remote features are working.  I am obviously not the only one and since MC17 works perfectly on the same hardware I am confident is it software.  I have purchased the upgrade license but I would hate to find that I am stuck forever on MC17..... I hope someone is listening here.

Possible fix - pause it with center OK button.  Then start it again with play button - then everything works (at least for me this time!)

Try version 18.0.81 (as soon as it becomes public). I had issues with not being able to FF or Jump 30 sec forward, and the latest version fixed the problem. Maybe it's not the same issue but worth trying before you shell out $ for a new remote.

Hi we are having an ongoing problem with the remote.

After watching something hubby presses the back button and it normally jumps back one menu.

For the last month or so after watching for 30 mins or so only the pause button works as if it has gone to sleep.

All it takes to make it work again is to use mouse movement and nothing else.

In the last (many) versions of MC18 none of the Play/Stop etc. buttons on my Logitech diNovo Mini work anymore. I have to manage with a combination of the OSD, the arrow keys and the back space. And the volume keys now only work when I have volume disabled in MC. Really sad because it used to work perfectly and I just don't know why this changed...

I just updated to the latest MC18 today and tried out this issue. It is still there.  I still can not use my Media Center remote with version 18.  I am still stuck using MC17 which works perfectly in this respect.  I paid for the upgrade but at the moment its not doing me any good.

The remote is the Rosewill sold by NewEgg.com

I just felt like I needed to update someone in case they felt it needed looking into.

It will probably work for you, it is working for me now. I could quibble about certain behaviors with the green button and the guide buttong but at least I can change channels and stop the program with the remote with this build. I was really loosing faith.

A short test using the very latest build does appear to work better with my remote now.  sorry I reacted too soon with a slightly earlier build.  I will continue testing.  Thanks.
