Particle Stuff (jmone list)

Finally, thanks for promising not to send live animals ever again.  If you keep your word, we may even do some of those particle improvements!

;D - No live animals sent for ages!

Rename/move/copy issue would be at the top of my list, filename oddness on creation would be second.

Forgot the link to the post on this but:

The "Right Click --> Stacks --> Advanced --> Create Particle" action is not added to the "Recent command" list.

Duration oddness doesn't seem to be JUST particles, bu paticles becaue they're tough to keep track off.  Occasionally .ts files will show this, mostly if they're incomplete, but sometimes just cuz.

Agggg not a new bug and I did not expect it to have been magic fixed... but boy is it annoying!  I was trying to manually create particles from my new Audio BD's but about 50% of them are not created correctly (see the second line in the pic) - worth a bump.

Gentle bump...

I must have done a library update over some particles and lost all my manually entered "Name" details, eg each individual track name such as "Hotel California" etc has been renamed back to "Eagles: The Farewell 1 Tour - Live from Melbourne"...for all 29 tracks/particles.

Thanks
Nathan

Edit - I guess I have about 100 titles to re-enter.   :'(
Edit2 - I wish the sidecar files had this info saved in them.

Maybe you can use my allmusic or discogs scripts to do this for you.  The only thing I'm not sure about is if your particles have a serial order to them such that you can know which one is chapter 1, chapter 2, etc.  Since you have 29 titles, I'm suspecting this is your release:

   http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/farewell-1-tour-live-from-melbourne-mr0003059523

You'll just need that last portion of the URL, which is the release ID, and from this, the amg.pl script will pull the data for you.

Seaton Sound used JRiver for its 5.1 demonstration room at AXPONA. They also plan to use JRiver for T.H.E. Show at Newport Beach at the end of May.

Last week Mark Seaton contacted me regarding setting up Particles in JRiver for creating demo material for shows, etc. I gave him instructions for Particles and creating views to handle the Particles, but cautioned that just duplicating the media and setting a playback range for it was safer due to the current inflexibility of Particles. Someone fairly new to the software and busy with a business doesn't have time to fix broken Particle links.

The media might be located on an external drive and needs to work with multiple computers running JRiver.

I'm another hoping for some more particle love.

I want to change the path where many of my videos are stored, but I am putting it off as long as I can in the hope particles get another look....

Using the library tools works for renaming a path for the physical files, but the particles don't get updated  :(

Plus there's the rest of the list too....

Oh, and one for Nathan (Particle Man)

Hence the gentle bump, but I figured it is worth posting when I manage to trash my particles with other MC features as shared pain makes it less.  I did think about looking up what other livestock I could ship but I did promise.... (though a box of baby Kangaroos may work  ;D )

Sharing the pain is fair enough. I think it's reasonable to put the experience on record while the wounds are raw for later reference down the track.

Regarding packaging off a box of 'roos, even though they start out pretty small:

and they may look cuddly to begin with ... they can turn into a bit of a handful:

Better off letting them run loose in the top paddock. Maybe the stuffed toy variety? Easier option for care and maintenance plus that comes with a good "awwwww" factor.

This is one of the albums where I have lost the "Name" - http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/farewell-1-tour-live-from-melbourne-blu-ray-mr0003863658

Oddly it has inserted an extra 37sec Chapter that does not exist on the BD - "12 Silent Spring [Intro]" but I've now created a particle for this so it matches.  I take it I should try the instructions here - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=84268.0

Given it is only the "Name" field I'd lost it would be easier to just manually renter the info but I'm keen to give your script a go if I've got the info above correct!

Thanks
Nathan

This is one of the albums where I have lost the "Name" - http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/farewell-1-tour-live-from-melbourne-blu-ray-mr0003863658

Ok, no problem...

Oddly it has inserted an extra 37sec Chapter that does not exist on the BD - "12 Silent Spring [Intro]" but I've now created a particle for this so it matches.  I take it I should try the instructions here - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=84268.0

No need to create the extra particle.  There is an option to specify the range you want to use.  It usage syntax is mentioned here:

    http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=84268.msg599000#msg599000

and in the Changes file for version 1.20.

Your command line would be:

   perl amg.pl -c amg-config.txt  --rid mr0003863658 --range 'T1-11,13-31' -i name

Given it is only the "Name" field I'd lost it would be easier to just manually renter the info but I'm keen to give your script a go if I've got the info above correct!

The -i name option above says to include only Name in the output; that's the only field then that gets populated.

*Note: there is a minor bug which you'll see a warning for when you run the command:

Code: [Select]
Use of uninitialized value in numeric eq (==) at amg.pl line 1131 (#1)
(W uninitialized) An undefined value was used as if it were already

I've fixed this and posted the update (v1.26).

By the way, if you create a user field called "AMG Album ID" *, and populate it with the rid value above, you won't need the --rid option, so you could use:

   perl amg.pl -c amg-config.txt  --range 'T1-11,13-31' -i name

Alternatively, you can supply that option and value, and include the rid key and it will be populated for you:

   perl amg.pl -c amg-config.txt  --rid mr0003863658 --range 'T1-11,13-31' -i name,rid

That way, you have it for the future to re-run should you need to.

* You can name the field as you wish - see the amg-config.txt file.

Any reason I'm not seeing to keep this hidden in the Beta board?

I went ahead and executive-decisioned it.  Nothing in this thread was "secret" in any way, and could be handy for others to see the responses and bug reports.  I also moved all of Nathan's links from the first post that weren't already public.  If I missed anything, let me know or do it yourself (where possible).

I'd like to add that, despite my fun-making, I do support good Nathan in his quest for Grand... Fix-ification... of Particles.  ;)  I don't use them, though I want to, because a bunch of those things in his list at the top are dealbreakers for me.

Nothing will probably happen on this for a while.  Matt needs to regain his footing first.

Noted.  Just talking here.  I thought it was worth moving it out for the discussion and documentation and whatnot, anyway.

One more for the list.  I tried to make some Time Based Particles on a DVD using "Create Particle" and entering a "Play Only this range".  While the particle was created, when playing it you just get the DVD Menu.

A "pressie"?  That sounds like the hugs my overweight aunt used to give me as a kid.  I'd be minding my own business when all of a sudden this giant comfy chair would come smacking into me, perfume and all, and trailing a comet's tail of bath powder.

I was wondering about this for a bit, but one thing occured to me -
When you select the main DVD entry, and you create a time-based particle, how would it know which track you want to play? Because it doesn't store a track to play, it plays the menu instead (and time-based particles dont work with the menu navigation)

One option would be to detect if its a DVD and then maybe offer a title choice in the particle menu.
As a second option, if you actually already have title-based particles (ie. from Auto Create BD/DVD Title Particles), and you create a particle on top of this particle, it should probably work (but it doesn't right now)

Ok that makes sense (just used to LAV picking a playlist on BD).

So what we are doing on BD's is
BD --> Make MPLS Particle --> Make multiple Time Based Particles

So I guess the same approach with DVD would be consistent.

Thanks

Upcoming:
Fixed: Creating time-based particles on top of a DVD Title particle preserves the DVD Title mapping.

If you already created title-based particles for your DVDs, you can now simply create a time-based particle on top of that.
Time-based particles on top of the root DVD entry will still open the navigation menu as before, maybe we should just not allow those....

I also thought about the Duration field, and while I could probably just fill the Duration with a value computed from the Playback Range, it would go out of sync if you manually edit the Playback Range afterwards.. not sure what to do here.

My goal with particles is to make a concert DVD/BD play like regular audio album/CD.... A) that is each song can easily be captured during particle creation (albums/CD's obviously come this way from the factory)  B) Jmone or someone pointed out a site that has all the DVD/BD range info for each song...a MC scrapper would be fantastic, and C) each song can be played without any interaction once selected with clicking or via a playlist.

Typical use case for me - select a playlist, MC takes over and plays...A) audio plays in "playing now" in whatever view I'm in without any further action by me, B) particles play in "display view" with out any further action by me.  Menus (today DVD tomorrow maybe BD....) are tedious and a PITA.  Super use case - album tracks and particles play intermixed in one playlist using the appropriate view.  Extra bonus points - I have one or two older DVD's that have audio setup functions in the menu, it would be nice to force the particle creation to always grab the surround sound/DTS audio.

Complaint of sorts - the couple times I attempted to setup particles have ended in clear failure.  Maybe pilot error...not sure.  I am no expert at DVD/BD ripping but I now have ~500 disc's ripped and working fine.  Only the particle aspect seems to elude me.  I've always wondered if I should have used MKV and thus I would have had fewer issues or maybe even some success....
