Crashes with Chromium as browser engine
« on: October 04, 2013, 01:23:51 pm »

Since a few versions MC crashes whenever the internal browser is used and Chromium is selected as browser engine.

Examples:
A Click on "Performer Store", Playlists", "Drives & Devices" or "Services & Plug-ins" causes MC to crash immediately.
When changing the display from "Cover Art" to "Track Info", sound keeps playing but GUI freezes and then MC crashes after some time.

Probably since MC17...as described in:

What OS are you using?

Anything unusual about the hardware?

We can't reproduce this.

In my case, Vista 32-bit.

Rough count would be about half dozen people have reported it.

Does the internal browser engine code ever get updated ?

PS  Usually it is a "hang" instead of a crash.   The audio will continue normally, but the display will hang.

I am using AMD/ATI internal graphics, with the last driver release for that chipset.

Probably since MC17...as described in:
Probably not, I still have running MC17 on the same machine (also with Chromium as browser) and never had problems with it.

I'm on Win7 64-bit, no special hardware, no third party plugins running...
Here is a system log, hope it helps:

If you're having this problem, please delete this folder and try again:
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 19\Plugins\chromium

Any difference?

I started logging and clicked on "Drives & Devices" and crash...
Now MC starts with a crash (black screen).
I also deleted the ..\Plugins\chromium folder, doesn't help.
So I guess I have to reinstall.

Delete this setting from the registry to switch back to IE:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 19\Properties\Web Browser - Engine

Meanwhile I reinstalled and tested again (by changing the display from "Cover Art" to "Track Info") with the same result:
With Chromium it crashes, with IE it's working. So I will stay with IE for now.
Thanks Matt for looking into this. Let me know if I can do something else to test...

By the way...

The link in the logfile
( http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/redirects/MC/v19/redirect.pl?type=dependency&prodname=Media%20Center&version=19.0.50&dependency_name=chromium&dependency_version=3 )
starts a chromium download with 23,6MB... this may last some time. Maybe that's the reason for the freeze/crash?
MC19 seems to use IE as browser after being installed and does not have the chromium-engine installed with it?
Shouldn't it start the download when the browser engine is changed (and show the download progress)?
In my case, I restored a library from MC17 after MC19 was installed, by which also the browser setting was changed from IE to Chromium. So...  ;)

Maybe a firewall or other security software is preventing the download and that is the cause of the crash.

Nope, as mentioned in my previous post, the download starts. But it can not be finished because there is no "clean" download process and MC crashes before.
I'll try to make it clearer. The problems are:

- there is no hint that there is a chromium download in the background
- the gui freezes while downloading
- if the frozen gui is clicked, MC crashes
- if the crash happens while changing the display from "Cover Art" to "Track Info", MC can start up again ("Cover Art" is still set for display then)

- if the crash happens when clicking on tree entries like "Performer Store", Playlists", "Drives & Devices" or "Services & Plug-ins", MC crashes immediately.
- if MC crashes immediately, it may try to start up with (for example) "Playlist" again and then starts with a black screen and crashes immediately again.
- if that happens, sometimes the "a previous crash was detected dialog" comes up, sometimes not. But starting with defaults does not even help.

So in case you do not know what the reason for the crash is and do not know which registry key to edit to switch back to IE,
you are stuck and forced to reinstall. In my case, the switch from IE to Chromium was done by restoring a library from MC17,
not intentional by changing the options...

My workaround was to trigger the display change from "Cover Art" to "Track Info" and wait. I did not "touched" the frozen GUI for about
3 minutes and then the display finally changed from "Cover Art" to "Track Info" (so the download in the background was finished successfully).
Now "Performer Store", "Playlists", "Drives & Devices" or "Services & Plug-ins" also work and show the "entry pages".

I have a quick internet connection, I think the 3 minutes for ~23MB are because of a limit of the musicex.com server. But even if it was
much quicker, the by default missing chromium files can cause nasty problems...

Another problem when using Chromium
« Reply #12 on: October 05, 2013, 02:01:57 am »

The "entry pages" for "Playlists", "Drives & Devices" or "Services & Plug-ins" include some links to help and store pages.
When using IE as internal browser, these links are opened in the external browser (in my case Firefox).
When using Chromium as internal browser, these links do not work, only a white page shows up inside MC.

This is odd. It may be part of the problem.

How recent is your IE?

IE 10.0.9... (what comes with automatic updates)

Under MC17, IE an Chromium both also open these links with an external browser.
I'm not complaining about that (I never used these links before, but others might find them usefull...).
Just wanted to give another hint about Chromium implementation.

To reiterate:

Myself, "Fish Symbol", and Castius (see link referenced in this thread) have reported this problem.  To my recollection, four other people in the past year reported fixing a hang by changing the internal browser from Chromium to Internet Explorer.  One is "thmpi" (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80829.msg552213#msg552213).  Another is "nitephlight" (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83625.msg571620#msg571620).  Another is "daremoS" (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83117.msg567590#msg567590).  Similar problem (could be the same) is "rossp" (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=79531.msg540782#msg540782).

IIRC, the default is Internet Explorer, and so the problem would be unlikely to be reported by many other people, because the internal web features are not used very often (as indicated by what is mentioned in this Forum).

I myself only changed to Chromium in order to see if I could get the web site of an Internet Radio feed to display, in order to get the artist/title/album information (because that particular feed did not use MP3's capability to display the information live).  The internal Internet Explorer browser did not display the web site page properly, which is why I tried shifting to Chromium.

So, ironically I only encountered the Chromium hang due to the fact that the internal Internet Explorer browsing engine does not display pages correctly.

How often are the internal browsing engines updated ?   One other free music player updates its internal browsing engine every time it releases a build...

It doesn't mean there is a chronic problem with Chromium in MC.  It's commonly used.

It's possible there is a problem with Chromium on some machines or with some configurations.

So far found eight different users:

Here is a ninth guy "mrfx", and he reported the problem only occurs when he has a working Internet connection, so it could be related to the "downloading" aspect mentioned above by fish symbol:

Could be a firewall problem or Chromium trying to update something.  Do you have the Chrome browser installed?  Does it work?

No Chrome browser installed.  Note:

JRWeb.exe is a little bit special.  If you use the Chromium browser engine (Options > Tree & View > Browser), the Chromium components like libcef.dll get downloaded before the JRWeb.exe program is run.

You'll notice the hourglass next to libcef.dll in Dependency Walker.  This means it's a delay loaded component, and only loaded when or if used.  If you use the default Internet Explorer web engine, libcef.dll should not be needed.

In general we try to delay load everything we can.  It helps load performance and resource usage.

So, it is possible that to duplicate the problem, you need to start with a computer with no Chromium or Chrome installed.

Do others who have had the problem have the Chrome browser installed and working?

I just re-tested my issue (as per link above) and still have it. Changing back to explorer works.

I use chrome at home and at work. I only had the problem at home.
I mostly use the Dev/beta versions of Chrome.
I will retry chrome at home and see if it's still happening.

If one machine works well and the other doesn't, is there anything different?  A virus checker, for example.

If IE is used as MC's browser, this will be the IE browser engine that comes with windows and is updated through windows.
MC does not need additional downloads in this case.

To use the Chromium engine as browser, an additional (automated background) download is needed.
You can use this engine inside MC even if the Google Chrome browser is not installed.
There should be no dependencies between the Chromium engine inside MC and the Chrome browser, if it is installed.
If the Chrome browser is updated, that should not affect MC's "embedded" Chromium engine.

I doubt that one of the problems is related to a firewall or virus checker issue:

Problem 1 is the unclean handling of the background download process of the Chromium engine (please see my Reply #11 for details).
The Chromium framework also offers functions for autoupdate. I can not tell if MC uses them.
But there does not seem to be any problems with that once Chromium was installed successfully (which can, as described in Reply #11, be hard to be achieved...).

Problem 2 is the broken handling of external links inside MC's Chromium engine.
This is working in MC17 on the same machine in the same way with Chromium as IE works (by opening the pages in the external standard browser).
In MC19, IE also opens the links in the external standard browser but Chromium only opens a white page inside MC.

Same issue for me, since updated to IE 11 on Win 7.
MC freezes rather quickly.
If I kill JRWeb.exe, playing back starts again, I just miss some display :-).

I am having exactly the same problem. Chromium does not work for me either, rendering MC unusable.

I just converted my htpc to win 8.1 from win 7, because of many problems.  Everything works great now, except chromium.  I switched the browser engine from IE to Chromium and now I cannot launch JRiver.  just black window and the rotating circle for a mouse pointer.  i let it go for 21 mins just to see if it would ever respond and nothing.  if i hit any key rapidly, windows prompts with a "JRiver not responding, do you want to shut down or wait?" dialog.  The part about this that really sucks is that i can not get jriver started so i can switch it back to IE.  FWIW, I had problems with chromium on win 7 with the same machine.

Anyone have a suggestion of how to change back to IE?  I just finished setup and all the calibration and guide editing, etc and would really like to avoid doing that all over again.

thanks for any help or ideas.

Stop JRWeb in Task Manager.

Thanks for the reply, Matt.  I eventually uninstalled and reinstalled jriver to get back to IE browser engine.  Would stopping JRWeb allow me to switch and successfully use chromium as the browser engine or was that just to allow me to switch back to IE?  If it's the former I will try again but I don't want to get stuck having to potentially uninstall and redo everything a third time.
