Wiki Updates
« on: January 20, 2014, 01:57:16 am »

Lots of good updates, and now I'm spurred on from everyone's fine example.  I was having a look at some of the pages I wrote or contributed to (way back in MC12 days) and boy are they out of date.  To make sure we don't double up I'll have a look at:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Video_Playback_Customization
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Customisable_Video_Playback

I plan to ditch the Reclock stuff all together.

Thanks!

I was going to ask for a list of topics that need revising or good forum topics that could be moved to the wiki.

Good idea.  A consolidated thread of who is doing what bit makes sense to me.

What do people want to do with superseded stuff in general?  By this I mean things that applies only to older versions of MC.  Should the Wiki only contain info that is relevant to N-2 (eg MC17,18,19)?  If so, should we ditch such content all together or is there some way in the Wiki of having an "Archive Area" that these pages can be moved to?

Glynor I think you made these pages, but is it time to retire them or create an "archive" area for such content?

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide:Alternative_Filters
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide:DVD_and_MPEG-2

I was thinking the same last night.

If we change the Category on those (and other similar things) to Archived FAQs, or something similar.  You can then add "Frequently Asked Questions" as a category on the page for the Archived FAQs page, and it adds it as a subcategory to the main FAQ page, and they'll remain easy to find for people using older versions of MC.

There.  I moved the rest of the old DirectShow guides you referenced above over to the new Archived FAQs category.

To move other articles, simply add this to the tail of the file (in place of the regular FAQ category):
Code: [Select]
[[Category:Archived FAQs]]

I just wanted to pay my respects. The entry by glynor on DirectShow was an "Aha moment" for me, back in the MC12 days when I was new to the HTPC and codecs. I do not exaggerate when I say that it changed my life forever.

Its funny.

I've read about that guide a few other places, just lurking, on the Internets at large.  I remember one guy saying something like: "Some guy wrote this guide on codecs and stuff over here (link).  It is specific to some other player, but it is pretty good and you can just follow most of that."  Junk like that, here and there.

Still #4 on the Google if you search for "directshow playback", right below three MSDN results.  I think it was #1 for a time.

It would be nice if someone used the framework and made a new, updated edition, referencing all the great work that has been done by madshi and nev.*  But...  Red October made me really, really lazy in this regard.  I knew all that crazy figuring it out stuff because you had to crazy figure it out to get anything done back in those days (and my job made me deal with it constantly, transcoding things from one format to another).   I just haven't been following it as well as I could... Because I don't have to anymore.

A bunch of people here really have the knowledge, but I don't know if they have the motivation or time (or writing skills, frankly) to do it justice.

* But maybe keep my old version archived, for old-timey's sake.

Oh, yeah.  I forgot, and it is on Wikipedia.  I didn't do that.

And a bunch of eHow link-farm type articles, though that's of dubious honor.

EDIT: Hah.  I got curious, so I looked.  I guess I did do that.  I added it way back in May 2007, and the "blurb" around it has been changed (and other external links have come and gone), but it stayed.

I've moved these to the Archive but need to add some content back into http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Video_Playback_Options especially the detail on "playback info" but I'm travelling at present so don't have full access to my home system to check some details.

Also - I remember as a newbie the early days of the Direct Show playback and the guide Glynor put together and the "debate" we had on Frame Rate changing and Reclock to get stuff smooth.  Then came the BD support debates.  I was most nervous at the time, but now they are core features of MC!  Next is Intercom!

Exactly how I feel too. I read about people's codec issues on other forums, and I almost sneer at them not using MC, choosing 'eye candy' over functionality.

I'm a newbie on this!  How do I:
1) Edit a title of an existing page, eg http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Video_Playback_Aspect_Ratio to say "Video Playback : Aspect Ratio and Cropping" as I want to broaden this page and
2) Create a new page.

Sorry  :-X

2. Start here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85964.msg588141#msg588141

I usually just make a link from my user page on the Wiki.  Click your name in the top-right of the screen (and make that a page if you need to), and then you can just add links there, click on them to make new pages.

The paradigm of a Wiki page is that the name is immutable, since it is likely to be linked to by other pages.  So you have two options: 1) create a new page and use the Redirect technique described in the link I posted above in (1), or 2) ignore the page name, and just use the naming feature of a link.

Sorry about my terse post last night - late at night for me, and using a tablet.

I had the same question/problem as you, back when I wrote the File Properties (tags) page.  When you create the redirect, the original page still exists, but only as a redirect for those other pages that still use the links.  The FAQ can be updated to include only the new page created.  Eventually, when you find all pages that link to the old page, you can update those pages with the new page, and when there are no more links, delete the old page (if you don't care about the history).

So, create a new page.  Add your content.  Add the link to get the page on the FAQ, if desired.  Edit the old page and add the redirect syntax.

You can see the list of redirects, by going to the Wiki Special Pages, and searching for Redirects.  It takes you here:

   http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php?title=Special:ListRedirects&limit=500&offset=0

The syntax for a redirect looks like this:

   #REDIRECT [[Talk:Expression Language]]

This was for the last redirect shown on the Redirects page.

The bad thing about Redirects is you lose the history in the new page.  If course it is there in the old (redirected page).

Can I suggest some candidates for Wiki additions (I don't currently have access to edit, I don't think)?

Specifically, I think we get about a query a week concerning how something in DSP studio functions.  I wrote a long post that covered most of the PEQ filters here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85606.msg584954#msg584954

It's not perfect or exhaustive, but I think it would be more helpful on the wiki than the current parametric EQ page (which just links to a long thread about a specific PEQ application)  http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Parametric_Equalizer

There are a few other issue areas like that (i.e. areas with recurring questions, etc.) that I can think of that could be wikified, but DSP is the one I see over and over.

Can someone from JRiver confirm if the ParserFunctions extension is installed on the Wiki? I looked at the version page, but if that's it listed under extensions, it doesn't look how I expected (though you are running the older 1.15.5 version, so maybe it is different).

It is very useful for templates, including some of the "base" Wikipedia templates, and I'd like to import some of those (turn on ambox and some basic templates).

If not, it is included in Debian's mediawiki-extensions-base so it should be pretty simple to install.

That looks great jmone, thanks for that.  There's a blank header for "overview of video capabilities"?  Is that where the intro will go? If it's for an intro, something like this would probably work:

"JRiver's DSP Studio includes a powerful and flexible parametric equalizer (PEQ) that can be configured with any number of sequential filters.  PEQ can be used for simple tasks like equalization and channel routing, and for advanced tasks like creating a crossover for active speakers or doing advanced bass routing.  Below are explanations of how several of the most commonly used PEQ filters work (for some additional detail on some potential uses of PEQ see the wiki article on channel mixing http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Mixing)."

I don't see "edit" at the top, unfortunately, which is why I thought I probably couldn't make changes to the wiki.  Thanks again for transcribing it  ;D

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Special:Version

As I mentioned, I saw that.

But, I have some experience setting up my own Wikis, and the indication there doesn't look anything like what I'm used to seeing for the ParserFunctions extension.

Look at the one on mediawiki.org:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Version

It explicitly lists ParserFunctions (written like that, not what could be the more generic "parser functions"), lists a version number, and the author of the extension.  The info on JRiver's wiki isn't like that at all.

It could be just differences between current mediawiki implementations and older versions.  I used to run a 1.15.x wiki, but it was a long time ago, and I don't remember how it is "supposed to look".

I could, I suppose, just test some templates.  But I didn't have time to do it if it wasn't going to work, because it is a huge PITA.

Does anyone have any issue with me going through some of these and "formatting" things?

I'm going to make some templates (after I import the base ones I want) that do things like:

* Automatically color and format things like Tools > Options > Tree & View > Advanced.
* Uses nicer code blocks
* Format option names, button labels, and stuff like that.

And, for the stuff you added, Nathan, I'm probably going to go through and break things out into a few ordered lists (numbered steps).

Fom Wiki:
However, to decode DTS-HD you need to copy the "dtsdecoderdll.dll" from an installation of Arcsoft TMT installation

This advice/wiki is not new - but is it okay to tell members to copy a piece of the TMT program (of course no one is telling the member "not to purchase" TMT to get it)? Would Arcsoft mind if they read the Wiki? If Arcosoft might mind, perhaps the instruction to copy the dll is better if it just comes from one member responding to another member's question. If there was any concern over the legality of this instruction you could leave out the part about where to get the file.

I can't imagine why.  We're just telling them to buy a copy, which is free advertisement.  Even if they did have a problem with it, there's nothing they could do about it, as long as we're not encouraging anyone to do anything illegal (which we're not, so long as we don't link to or provide illicit copies).

Once you own it, you're free to use it as you see fit.  If they didn't like that, then they could engineer their component differently.  It is open to outside use on purpose.

Can someone from JRiver confirm if the ParserFunctions extension is installed on the Wiki? I looked at the version page, but if that's it listed under extensions, it doesn't look how I expected (though you are running the older 1.15.5 version, so maybe it is different).

Bump.

Sorry, I didn't catch that you'd reviewed the special page when I read / replied on the tablet last night.  JRiver's version is ancient, the version being release in June 10, 2009, so I suspect the Special Pages format will be different.  I've forgotten who, but someone at JRiver mentioned they run a very sparse/lean wiki, to mitigate security and maintenance issues.

Yeah, it's running on Debian Squeeze (or maybe Wheezy and the mediawiki release still references squeeze).  The 1.15.5 version is the "stable" version in debian's apt-get package system.  It is quite easy to deploy (basically, sudo apt-get install mediawiki, done), and is stable and easy to update.

So, I get why they're running the old one.  No biggie.

I just wasn't sure if that was a listing of the actual plugin, or if that's a listing of what parser functions (generic) are supported on this particular wiki.  If I could get my old G4 to boot up, I think I still have a 1.15.x mediawiki instance on that box, which had ParserFunctions installed, so I could just look myself.  But, I'm too busy today.

Does anyone have any issue with me going through some of these and "formatting" things?

I'm going to make some templates (after I import the base ones I want) that do things like:

* Automatically color and format things like Tools > Options > Tree & View > Advanced.
* Uses nicer code blocks
* Format option names, button labels, and stuff like that.

And, for the stuff you added, Nathan, I'm probably going to go through and break things out into a few ordered lists (numbered steps).

Works for me.  My formatting attempt is just a cut and paste from other articles.

I did this:

If someone could get me some details on how Gizmo deal with Users, and screenshots, I'll add them.  I don't have a Gizmo device so I can't help there.

Minor typo I think, on the Users page under security and scope:

Quote
So, users can still all of the source media files via Windows Explorer.

I think that's missing something between "still" and "all". :P

glynor, I'll give Import and Users a read and report back.

While you're inspired, one improvement to consider for the Wiki FAQ page is to add an entry under "T" to read:
  • Troubleshooting Guide

If a link could be provided to:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Troubleshooting_Guide
it would address the annoying experience I had of looking under the "T"s for the troubleshooting guide and eventually finding it filed under the "M"s.

I know now but a new user will probably follow the same intuitive behaviour as myself and feel frustrated.

Also worked on:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Import

This isn't done.  I only made it as far as the Configuring Auto-Import section, which was already there with those screenshots.
