Still stuck...  You can see in this snapshot (1) I successfully loaded 27 files onto the Id via the network, (2) MC is connected to the Id Library Server using the access key but it says it has 0 files, and (3) Tools->Import is grayed out.

What am I still doing wrong?

In your screenshot of MC, you're showing the Id as a server.  Try rebooting the server, or just exiting MC.  It will restart in a minute and should import the files.

If that doesn't work, your auto import settings are probably wrong.  You have to tell MC what folders to import and what file types.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question, but I have spent most of the Christmas and new year break trying to solve this on my own bit have failed.
I have the NUC Id (Fully Baked) and am trying to play back a 96k  5.1 Flac file, through the HDMI port, to an Audio extractor that should  then send the 5.1 audio over a Toslink into the back of my Bose Media Centre.

According to Audio Path it tells me that I am indeed playing a 6ch file ( down sampled to 48K).

My media centre shows the file as PCM 2.0 but does not tell me that the audio is Dolby or DTS and my rear speakers are quiet.

To prove the bits I do understand connecting my blueray players hdmi output to the Audio extractor and placing a 5.1 dvd in the drive causes the media centre to react as expected.

Am I missing something fundamental here?

Random shot in the dark, but have you tried enabling Dolby/DTS bitstreaming?

I purchased an Id Classic last month and have spent several days trying to get it set up without success. My goal was to use the Id connected by USB to my surround sound processor. I want to connect a 1TB WD passport external drive connected by USB to the Id to store my Music files. The Id will be controlled by a MacBook Air using MC23. The Id was connected to my LAN via ethernet cable and the MacBook Air connects to the LAN wireless. I do not have access to a windows computer or Internet Explorer. The Id will need to be run headless without a monitor once it is set up.

When I connected the Id via HDMI to my TV I went through the install guide instructions but could not find the Id in MC on the MacBook Air. I also could not confirm that the WD passport had been mounted. Here are my questions at this point;

1. Is it possible to set up and operate the Id in my environment using only Apple computers as I have described above?

2. If the answer to #1 is yes then how do I locate the Id in MC23 on the MacBook Air. I could not find it under Playing Now.

3. How do I change the output on the Id from HDMI to USB? I tried to switch the output from HDMI to USB going into Tools-Options-Media Network without success.

3. How to I mount the WD passport external drive to the Id and confirm it is operating properly?

Thanks,

Ron

Trying to understand the flow.
The audio extractor is a device connected via to the Id via HDMI and it's expecting a 5 channel PCM file?

In this case the DLNA settings aren't in play.

Since the output is going to 48k that means DSP studio is being used.
The default settings for that are to downsample and mix to suit the capabilities of the built-in audio.
You should go into DSP studio for the main player zone and change the settings to not do channel mixing and not resample rates that your device supports.

You should be able to do this, that's a normal use case.

If Media Network is enabled on your Mac you should be able to see the Id on your Mac MC under Playing Now. If that's not the case you should check the network connection on the Id (wired or wireless?)
You don't need windows to manage the Id, there are several different ways of doing it:
Panel is one (once you see it in MC on the Mac).
Another is VNC or Remote Desktop to connect directly to the Id GUI (you can get both VNC and Remote Desktop for the Mac, Remote Desktop is available from Apple free and TigerVNC is available for the Mac free).
If you have a monitor and keyboard attached for configuration, you can do basic setup from the headless mode text menu.
You change the output from internal to USB either with Panel or in the MC Audio Options menu on the Id (via VNC, etc).

Correct Bob, HDMI lead from the Id to the Audio extractor, audio extractor converts to 2ch analogue and Optical. Optical choices are 2 channel or 5.1. The optical output is plugged into optical input of the Bose.

When I play Audio from the Id the Bose recognises the audio as PCM 2.0  plays it but without the surround info.

If I move the hdmi lead to a blu-ray player and play 5.1 audio the Bose changes to Dolby Digital and the surround becomes active.

I set the Down sample to 48k as without I get full scale very loud non locked digital noise.

I only started messing with (DLNA) settings when I had exhausted everything else!

Gary

If the hdmi lead is moved from the ID to Blu Ray device, and a 5.1 piece of audio played, the media centre switches as expected.

I have been successful in getting the Id to download files from the WD passport external drive and play them through my surround sound processor using the USB output. The Id is showing on my MacBook Air and I can play files remotely  using the MB Air. However when I try to use DSP Studio functions I get a message that DSP studio can only be used in local zones. The DSP studio functions are what I enjoy most about JRiver MC and I need to be able to remotely make adjustments as I am listing to music. How can I accomplish this with the iD?

Thanks for your help.

You'll need to set the DSP Studio options on the Id, not the MacBook. You can do this by using a VNC or RDP client (the ones Bob mentioned) to remotely connect to the Id, and you can configure the DSP Studio options that way.

So the original material is 5.1.
Bitstreaming is Options is set to none.
You are downsampling that in MC to 48k in DSP studio output format.
The channels setting in output format is set to source number of channels
When you play this material to the audio extractor it's set to convert to what? to send to the bose?

If you set the DSP studio output format channels setting in MC to 5.1 channels does that make a difference?

Hi Bob, in order

Yes, at 96k
Have tried Bitstream on ( hdmi ) and custom with everything ticked except DSD

Yes due to Very LOUD noise that comes out at 96 k
Tried both source number of channels and 5.1

As far as I know the extractor does no conversion ...

Interesting...
Have you tried the same test with Windows or Mac?

Can you share one of your audio files with me (small preferably) so I can try to duplicate this (I'd feed it directly into a multichannel hdmi amp).

Do you want me to PM File?

OK, I got the files loaded and can play them ONLY from the Id GUI.

I don't have the same playback options in MC on my laptop as I do on the Id-loaded MC.

So how can I get MC synced on the laptop and Id so I don't have to use a monitor for the Id?

Bob, have tried playing same file via a windows laptop into the extractor(s), and the big difference between the laptop and the ID is they will play at the sample rate of the file with no down sampling and 6 channel.
The best I can get out of the ID being 48k. is this something to do with the Linux drivers for HDMI?

Forgive me if this has been addressed in the last 18 pages of the thread, but I was wondering if this device will render DNLA text-to-speech requests. I'm looking for an inexpensive device that I'd be able to connect to my network to broadcast messages from my automation system and the Raspberry Pi version of the Id looks like it may fit the bill.
Thanks in advance

I've never heard of DLNA text-to-speech.  I took a quick look.  I suppose you have software that will take text and convert it to speech.  If so, and if it can talk to a DLNA Renderer, then MC on the Id should work.

The Id is described here:

http://www.jriver.com/Id

If you are using other software to send the speech, please provide a few details.

I've been using the DLNA plugin of the Vera controller to send TTS to some DNLA compatible media players in the recent past. Maybe someone can test this using an Android device. It's been a while since I experimented with this so I'll need to get back to you once I reestablish a method.

Gary, the NUC Id should play up to 192k HDMI.
The IdPi was limited to 48k but we put out an update that makes it do up to 192k.

I'd be happy to test on Android if you can give me a way.

It looks like Tasker is the way to go, though I don't understand enough about the programming involved to manage a test on my own. I found a thread where someone discusses sending text announcements to a Sonos speaker here: https://en.community.sonos.com/advanced-setups-229000/http-post-command-reference-for-tasker-30365/index1.html#post15977024
It seems that the MediaRenderer commands would be helpful. If there is any way you can look at this and let me know if this would work with the Id (and the Windows player as well, for that matter)?
Thanks again for your assistance

Hello,

I am interested by the Id. Two questions :
1- Is the Id compatible with Audio-GD master 11 DAC ? For windows, I need an amareno driver.
2- Is there any other solutions to upgrade pi for a richer sound  ? Is it possible to use the Pink Faun I2S pCI-e board ?

Thank's

1.  I don't know.  If the DAC works with Linux without installing a driver, it should work with the Id.

2.  You can't install boards in the Id or modify it in any way.  It's an "appliance".

I have just received my Id which I intend to use as my music server in place of my Macbook Pro and have gone through the set up process which has gone well but will not play through the USB output to my Project Dac Box DS2 Ultra. The Id recognises the USB Dac but when trying to play the MC23 on the Id reports it is unable to play 2channel 44.1khz files.
Are there drivers required for the Linux version of MC23?

The driver question should be addressed to the manufacturer of the DAC.  If it works on Linux without a driver, it will work with the Id.

Try using converting to 48Khz.  Player > DSP Studio > Output Settings.

Tried the 48khz with same result. DAC works fine off MC23 on Macbook with DAC but doesn't seem to like MC23 on Id,

If you go into Tools -> Options -> Audio, which device do you have selected from the list right under Audio Device? USB DACs usually have multiple instances in this list, so you might want to try other items from this list. Just make sure the item in the list indicates that it is the DAC.

Thanks for the information - tried all options and when I try and play a tune - I can hear the relays clicking in the DAC then I get the unable to play message. Optical output from Id works fine except for dsd

I have now installed Firmware version 1.04 on my Pro-ject DAC Box DS2 Ultra and the USB is now fully recognised on the Id but only plays at 48khz whatever the output on DSP Studio.

Am I Doing something wrong?

Hi Jim

USB everything outputs at 48khz and will not play 44.1 unless upscaled to 48khz or dsd files by bit streaming dsd as it does on MAC version of MC23. Optical great up to 192khz but have to upscale 176.4khz files to 192khz as optical does not cover 176.4khz. and play dsd files at 192khz.

What does Media Center show as the selected device from the device list in the Audio tab under Options? Also, try option 10 from the Id main menu (Show audio device information) to see what sample rates it shows as being supported by your DAC.

Well believe it or not - I reverted to default settings, reloaded the library, set the DAC Box DS2 Ultra on D20 as USB sound card and nothing would play. I then went into system mixer and set the sound card to the DAC Box DS2 Ultra and "Eureka" plays everything up to dsd256.

Very Happy

Are you referring to the NUC Id or the IdPi?

I have been ripping cd’s via DbPoweramp to play through the JRiver Id and the playback at 44.1 is glitchy via USB
I have re-ripped a cd with a noticeable glitch in WAV, FLAC and AIFF and the glitches are all at the same places. Same track played though my CD transport into the DS2 Ultra is glitch free and if I output from the Id via the optical instead of USB replay is again glitch free. There also seems a noticable jump in the time display at the same time as the audible glitch.
I have found that I can eliminate these glitches on USB with a “sticking plaster” approach within JRiver both from the MAC and the Id of outputting 44.1 files as 88.2 which also seems to eliminate the any jumps on the time readout.
All other resolutions other than ripped 44.1 cd’s are glitch free via USB.
I have sent a copy of a ripped track with a noticeable glitch to Project to check out if they have issues with the DAC but they are unable to replicate the issue using the windows version of MC23 and Foobar2000.
Has this issue cropped up elsewhere?

Try ripping in MC, just to test.  Just use the defaults.

Hi Jim
Same problem whether I rip in MC, iTunes or dBPoweramp.

What voltage is the power supply?

What is plugged into it?  A drive?
