Install problem
« on: December 19, 2015, 09:04:38 am »

Not sure I am posting correctly, but I am having problems installing MediaCenter. I am brand new to this forum.  I purchased Media Center the other day and it won't install. I may have done something wrong, but I am stuck in do-loop and keep getting the following error msg:  "The Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."  I already did restore.  Same problem

I have Windows 10 Edge and McAfee.

Thank you for your help.

I uninstalled McAfee.  Still can't successfully install.  What is the process for a refund?

Did you reboot?

Is Windows also running security software?

There is a Windows 10 thread here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=99125.0

In general, we're not seeing a lot of problems with Win10.

Did you download MC from our site?  And then execute the file to install it?  See "Getting Started" in my signature for the details.

I think I should just get a refund if that is an option.  I am definitely not happy with the way support is provided.

seriously?? you get 2 responses the same day you post from the head of the company and you don't respond to him and you have a problem with support. Oh well different strokes for different folks, I guess. You get 30 days to try it out before you pay for it

Remember there is the file you download for free (time limited) and a license file which validates it. Start over, make sure your AV is not getting in the way of the install. Then, when you are up and running validate your "license"

Sorry, I don't mean to be unreasonable but I am a bit frustrated.  First, I did already pay through PayPal, and I have confirmation from PayPal that payment was made to JRiver on 15 December.

I did not do the trial period because my friend turned me on to JRiver a few weeks back on another computer with a 30 day  unregistered trial version.  I was happy with the product, so I went ahead and purchased this registered version on my main computer.  However, after download, I see the MC21 icon but when I click on it nothing happens.  I tried restore 4 or 5 times or so (I get emails telling me I only have 5 or 6 left), but still can't run the file.  I even completely uninstalled McAfee, but no help.  Hence my frustration.

Early on, first couple of tries it appeared it was trying to open with adobe, now it is switched and trying to open with explorer.  In fact the MC21 icon on my desktop is an explorer icon.  What did I do wrong, and is there any way to start completely over with a brand new instantiation of MC 21?  Thank you.

I think you have a glitch in your Windows 10 system. Some files are corrupt. I had a similar problem with a different software install.

First run the Windows SFC program: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2895-sfc-command-run-windows-10-a.html

Also, try running the Windows DISM (Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management) tool.
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7808-dism-repair-windows-10-image.html?filter[1]=General Tips

Uninstall MacAfee (don't just disable). You can reinstall later if you want, after the JRiver program is working.

Yes. This is a known issue with Windows 10* that can happen with upgraded systems or corrupted installs. It has nothing at all to do with MC (and the same issue will manifest on other applications you install on that PC now). It can be just a corrupt Icon Cache, or a sign of a corrupt Windows installation. It can also happen if you previously used an "Icon Manager" and then upgraded that PC to Windows 10 (without fully removing the old manager), or due to malware infection.

Some of these threads may help you track down the problem, though a clean install of Windows might be quicker and easier.

* I think, actually, this is a long-standing Windows issue. I remember helping someone with this same issue a long time ago, before Windows 10 existed.

OK, thanks.  I ran the SFC program and there were no integrity issues or violations.  I guess I will run the DISM next.

I also ran the DISM tool and it didn't reveal anything either.  McAfee is completely uninstalled.

OK, I just did a completely new download of the free 30 day trial version and it was successful!  So, how can I purchase this version, and cancel the other purchase so I am not charged twice?

Also, is there a limit to the amount of files that can be imported on the trial version?  Thanks.

Did you install it?

No limit to the number of files.

If you have a license, you can use it.  Just restore if necessary.  Details are here:

Yes, I installed and it is working fine.  I will try and use the license I already have from the previous purchase and let you know how it works out.

I seem to have lost my Artists subcategory under Audio.  How do I get that back?  Thanks.

Licenses for Media Center are "per customer" (generally) not "per installation". You are allowed to install MC on the PCs that you personally own and control, within reason. They are also good for all minor revisions "within" a major version (all the point releases of MC v21, for example). If you get the Master License then they're also cross-platform (otherwise a Windows License is only good on Windows copies of MC). More information (in addition to the Link Jim provided above) can be found here:
http://www.jriver.com/purchase.html

I seem to have lost my Artists subcategory under Audio.  How do I get that back?  Thanks.

The Artists "subcategory" is a Media View that is part of your Library. You can move and delete Media Views in the Tree. Perhaps you accidentally moved the Artists View somewhere else? If you drag-drop the Views on the Tree, you will get a Move/Copy/Cancel pop-up, and can move them to different parts of the Tree.

If your installation is brand new and you have not made any custom Views or Playlists, you could just clear (reset) the Library with the Library Manager:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Manager

And then re-import your files.

If you need to import Views, Playlists, Settings, or whatever from a previous installation (the other computer you referenced, perhaps) you could restore a Library Backup made on that copy to your new copy:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup

MC itself also makes automatic Library Backups, so you might even on the new one have one of those you could restore. But, as I said above, if the installation is brand new, you can just Clear the current Library and start over.

I understand and appreciate the restrictions on the license.  I am concerned about being charged again for this trial version, since I already paid the purchase price for the earlier version that would not properly install.  Please let me know how I can avoid a second charge. Thank You.

If you have a license, please use it.  Don't buy another one.
