Topic: Problem with uploading songs to a Sansa (Read 7279 times)

I've been using MC with my 8MB Sansa for a while now with good success, transcoding my FLAC files in my library to MP3s. Unfortunately, starting a couple of months ago, I started having problems uploading files to my Sansa. Random files would fail to upload. Eventually, the player would either disconnect or lock up. I've been working the issue from the side of the Sansa, ending with me RMAing my Sansa. Now I have a new one, and I have the same problems.

I've tried multiple cables, so it isn't a bad cable. I've tried different USB ports. I've even tried a different computer. I've manually uploaded files in MTP mode successfully in bulk.

This leaves MC. I've upgraded to the latest version (.358) and I still have this problem. Any suggestions?

Strange.

Do transfers of only a handful of files always work?

You could try to disable album art in case the .alb file creation is a problem.

Also, you could try some files with no cover art to see if it's related to this. (some devices have problems with big art, but MC is pretty good about not putting too large of art on a device for this reason)

Nope, didn't work. The uploads all of a sudden started failing. The Sansa is still connected, tho.

Sansa players have always given us a lot of headaches in MSC mode. Because of this we recommend using them in MTP mode.

I took this to mean that you weren't having any problems in MTP mode. I'll look into it...

Sorry about the confusion. What I was saying that copying files directly works, but not through MC.

I was thinking along similar lines, but I hadn't the time to do it.

I converted a bunch of stuff to MP3 and created a new library which I put all the files into. Then I created a smartlist and attached that to my Sansa and did a sync. It worked with no problems, tho the upload speed seemed to vary.

Have you tried setting the Simultaneous Conversion to 1 in Handheld > Options > Conversion. It's possible the FLAC plugins are having problems with multiple instances.

Just gave it a try, and it failed. The player disconnected from the computer.

Look, I've already focused on the Sansa part before coming here, going as far as getting an RMA, and I'm still having problems. The Sansa has the latest firmware, and it worked previously with this firmware. I doubt it is the problem, considering all the time and effort I spent on that end.

I've been trying to work this problem for over a month with you guys, with little progress. And you wonder why people don't like Forum support....

MTP devices (PlaysforSure) are not all the same. Most will work. A few don't.

Forum support has nothing to do with the problem you're having.

Build 380 is available on the MC12 board. Did you try it?

It would be nice if someone would tell me that, rather than have silence for weeks. How am I supposed to know what the progress is if I don't hear from anyone? At the very least, I want to rule out some parts of the chain. So far, I've eliminated the Sansa itself and the connection to the Sansa.

The device worked perfectly fine, and seems to be fine if I'm just using MP3s. It craps out if I'm transcoding FLAC files.

Rick had sent me a link to Build 379, which I installed and there was no change. I'll try 380 when I get home, but I don't expect any different results than the many versons I've tried before then.

Jason,

We may be having a communication problem here. You've sent logs on two occasions and we've never received them. Then I sent you a build via email on November 27th and haven't heard any confirmation that you got it or if it worked or not until your last post.

To troubleshoot the problem we will have to see the logs. Are you using 'Click to email log files' when you send the logs? If not please use that method because that packages them up in a zip file so they don't get grabbed by the email overlords. Once again my email address is [rick at jriver dot com] (make sure to remove spaces and replace 'at' and 'dot' with the appropriate symbols).

I don't know why you are not getting my e-mails. I'm not getting any bounces from you, and no one else is having problems with my e-mail. I'll try my other e-mail account to see if that works.

We're not seeing anything helpful in the logs so I would try one or both of the following:

1) Set the device to MSC mode and re-format. Go into Options for the device and un-tick UseWMDM. Reattempt sync.

2) Keep conversion of your flac files and syncing as separate processes. Don't convert files as part of the sync process.

I was afraid of that. Let me know when you have better logging so that we can track down this problem.

Just finished an update, and while everything loaded, I don't see anything in MC.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Did you re-sync the device, it appeared to work but MC doesn't list any content on the device?

I switched to MSC mode mode, formated the drive, and synced my Sansa to a SmartList I have made up for it. The files will upload fine, and after I disconnect and it refreshes the database on the Sansa, the music plays fine.

But, if I reconnect the Sansa, it doesn't list any files, tho it sees the Sansa as full.

This is an old problem with the Sansa. The folder that your files are copied to is the "music" folder. This is a hidden folder on the Sansa even after switching from MTP to MSC mode and MC doesn't list the contents of hidden folders. (We assume they are hidden for a reason.)

So, the best way to work around this is to change your Audio Base Path in settings to "My Music". You may have to do this for images and playlists as well.

This is one of the main reasons why we have users set the Sansa's to MTP.

I'm sorry, but nothing I do seems to fix the problem. I've tried putting the music files into a directory called MyMusic. I've tried setting it to the root. I've changed all the directories to different names.

The odd thing is the files on the MicroSD card appear just fine.

Yep, I did all that. I see the files fine in explorer. Actually, I saw the files fine in the "MUSIC" folder in explorer as well. I don't know why MC can't see them...

We've made an exception for the Sansa e200 series players so that MC lists content in hidden folders in build 12.0.397. This will make using these players in MSC mode much more palatable.
