After years of saving the Cover Art in both the File Tags and a seperate central cover art folder I am considering the idea of placing the covers (as well as other related files i.e. mht, pdf) in the folders with the media files.

Simple question for which a forum search did not yield an answer:
How do I move thousands of covers to the individual album folders en masse?

In 'days of old' I could have used King Sparta's "Move Cover Art to folder.jpg" plugin but it is no longer available and did not support MC12.

I would like to do this in such a manner as to avoid updating the individual file tags since I do not wish to rewrite my entire backup set as well as all my media files.

Is this possible?

If your cover art and document file names have the correct artist and album embedded in them  (for example: Artist - Album.jpg) then you can import the files and fill properties from the filename using (for this example) a template [Artist] - [Album].

Then rename the files from properties using whatever naming convention you use for your music albums such as [Artist] - [Album] for the directory. This operation renames and moves the files in one operation and can be applied to all of your files at once.

Suggest you try a few first before operating on all of them because you can make a heck of a mess in a hurry if you do it wrong.

Alex that will certainly keep me busy for a bit, thanks.

Unfortunately I have a "unique" folder naming scheme so there is no easy way to use the "Rename Files From Properties" function without way too much hand work filling in matching tags in the cover art files. So I hope at least one of those uses a method which requires that.

Sorry to say that, but try the free MP3Tag http://www.mp3tag.de

I have used it for that and it worked.

Look for Converter->Actions and define a new action with
Export Cover "%artist%-%album%"
or something like that.

P.S.
I know, the most things in MP3Tag you also can do with MC12, but there
are some nice features like Web Sources for grabbing coverart etc.
And the programs can coexist and work together.

While we are on this subject, when I import some new music which has the cover art in the tag the Folder.jpg file does not get created. In my option I have specified the cover art 'in the same folder as the file (Folder.jpg)' and ticked in the tag option also. Is this a bug or a feature.

Neither, MC won't mess with your already existing cover art unless you explicitly tell it to, and rightly so. Setting this option tells MC where to find your cover art, and where to store it if you retrieve it through MC.

To take the cover art out of your tags you need to select your music files, select Cover Art->Remove Cover Art, then download the cover art again (or rescan it) and put it in your folder renamed as Folder.jpg.

If the Folder.jpg does not exist when you import the mp3 (with embedded cover art) file then MC should create it...

At this point I think I am just going to leave well enough alone.
I have way too many files to deal with and apparrantly cannot do it "automatically" because my folder structure is more complex so I cannot use any of MC's power-features to rename the covers into the proper folders.

folder.jpg was a mistake on Microsoft's part.  It's a bad idea.

If you use it, you'll get the same cover art for everything in the folder.  That's OK if you have the right tracks there, but it's often otherwise.
