Try disabling all third party-plugins
This one may have been related to a program call True Launchbar:

Virtual drives may result in slowdowns
Drive H:  Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
  Drive I:  Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
  Drive J:  Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=24291;start=msg169485#msg169485

Jim,
I just wanted to point out that my Virtual Drives were NOT the issue, removing them had no effect. My problem was related to the LAME encoder being set to high quality as discovered later in the thread.
it might save someone unnecessary uninstalling/reinstalling.....
cheers

MC Won't Install
Install starts, but then stops without completing.  Removing virus checker, pop-up blocker, etc. fixed the problem.
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25910.0

And a different install problem
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26356.msg182622#msg182622

Install problems can also be related to insufficient Windows temp file space.  Try running IE, then choosing Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete Files.

Sometimes an uninstall, reboot, reinstall will fix an incomplete install.

Kaspersky anti-virus software causes CD access in MC to slow way down.
If you experience very slow CD operations and are running Kaspersky, try disabling it.

McAfee anti virus runs wild, removes good files
This hasn't happened to MC, but it's a good example of the harm that other software sometimes does
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/03/14/mcafee_av_false_positive/

Excerpt:
"A faulty signature update from McAfee flagged up legitimate application files as infected with a low-risk virus, CTX.  The dodgy anti-virus update (4715 DAT), issued on Friday, March 10, falsely identified a number of component files of Microsoft Office applications and some Windows systems files as infectious. Along with Microsoft Excel, components of Adobe Update Manager, Macromedia Flash Player and Google Toolbar were falsely labeled as viral. McAfee has produced a seven page list of files known to trigger incorrect identification."

One way to lose data

There was no solution, just my experience of a bad onboard promise controller. Every file that passed through it came out the other side corrupted. To put it mildly, it was not a good time!
